Valley of Fire State Park is the oldest state park in Nevada, USA and was designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1968.
It covers an area of almost 42,000 acres (17,000 ha) and was dedicated in 1935. It derives its name from red sandstone formations, formed from great shifting sand dunes during the age of dinosaurs. These features, which are the centerpiece of the park's attractions, often appear to be on fire when reflecting the sun's rays.
Valley of Fire is located 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Las Vegas, at an elevation between 2,000--2,600 feet (610--790 m). It abuts the Lake Mead National Recreation Area at the Virgin River confluence. It lies in a 4 by 6 mi (6.4 by 9.7 km) basin.
Complex uplifting and faulting of the region, followed by extensive erosion, have created the present landscape. The rough floor and jagged walls of the park contain brilliant formations of eroded sandstone and sand dunes more than 150 million years old. Other important rock formations include limestones, shales, and conglomerates.
The park entry from Interstate 15 passes through the Moapa Indian Reservation. The park has a visitor center that should be visited by anyone planning any off-road activities.
The site is marked as Nevada Historical Marker #150.
Although petroglyphs are present throughout the entire park, Mouse's Tank and Atlatl Rock are two areas in particular which have many petroglyphs while being relatively easily accessible.
The park also features three cabins built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, which were once used by overnight campers (now prohibited).
The park is a popular getaway for locals and visitors alike, providing facilities for picnicking, camping, and hiking.

Valley of Fire is spectacular park outside of Las Vegas. Unusual sandstone formations have eroding into animal and other fantastic forms. The rocks invite adults and children to rumble over them and there are a rainbow of colors that paint the park so bring a camera. There are a series of areas that are can't be missed. Take the road that circles through the camping area near Arch Rock to view the sand stone formations with amazing forms and colors. Then proceed past the Visitor Center to the Mouse Tanks parking area. Walk the trail to the pictographs that the Anasazi have left for you. Continue on the road to White Domes through the unique vibrantly rock colors. Take the Valley of Fire exit off of I15 at the Moapa Reservation. then continue NV Route 169 to the Park.

Valley of Fire Silica Dome Loop Hike
A #HikingLove Production. Music by Gnawledge (Track 08 El Manisero de Potemkin). We drove about 45 minutes outside of Vegas for this hike hosted by the Valley of Fire State Park and guided by Brian, a seasoned hiker who leads a few hikes at the Park. We met the group at the Seven Sisters picnic area (i.e. seven massive red rocks lined up next to the road) past the Visitor Center and convoyed to Rainbow Vista parking. This was a loop trail that took us through Fire Canyon, spectacular red rock formations that occasionally felt like the set of the Flintstones, slot canyons, soft red sands, up toward Silica Dome and down through some white rock formations back to Rainbow Vista parking. It was a wonderful hike (fairly easy) and we made some lovely new hiker friends. Special thanks to Rosa (VoF Park Ranger) for organizing this event and Brian for leading it! (My) Alltrails Stats: 4.4 mi, 397 ft elevation gain, 734 cal burned

Hiking Prospect Trail, Valley of Fire, Nevada
Nevada's Valley of Fire State Park, an hour northeast of Las Vegas, has stunning orange rock formations. I think even better than Red Rock Canyon, just west of Sin City, or world-famous Sedona, AZ.Today, I hiked the Prospect Trail and White Dome Loop from Valley of Fire Highway to the north end of Mouse's Tank Road. This was my second trip to the park ( ) and I've seen desert bighorn sheep both times ( ). Blog, links & music:
