Bedford is the county town of Bedfordshire, England. Bedford was founded at a ford on the River Great Ouse, and is thought to have been the burial place of Offa of Mercia. Bedford Castle was built by Henry I, although it was destroyed in 1224.
Bedford was granted borough status in 1165 and has been represented in Parliament since 1265. It is well known for its large population of Italian descent. Bedford is on the Midland Main Line, with stopping services to London and Brighton operated by Thameslink, and express services to London and the East Midlands operated by East Midlands Trains.
The town of Kempston is adjacent to Bedford, as are the villages of Elstow, Renhold and Ravensden. Wixams is a new town which is being developed to the south of Bedford. The Windmill at Stevington, Bedfordshire
Stevington Windmill stands in a prominent position in a field 550 metres east of the village centre. Virtually every parish had its own windmill
from medieval times, usually a windmill or watermill but sometimes both. This mill was built in about the year 1770, the yearis inscribed on one
of the cross tees, but it may have succeeded an earlier mill. A storm in 1919 caused major structural damage but although rebuilt in 1921 by Percival Keech,
a local carpenter, at a cost of around £600, the mill stopped working in 1936. Decay set in but a campaign for the mill to be restored succeeded in
persuading Bedfordshire County Council to purchase the mill and 7.5 acres of land for £390 in July 1951. The mill was then renovated by Messrs. Clayson & Son
of Harrold at a cost of nearly £564 as one of the County Council's five contributions to the 1951 Festival of Britain.
This is a timber post mill with a box-like wooden body built around and resting on a central post. The whole mill had to be turned clockwise around this post whenever
the wind changed by pushing the long tailpole projecting from the rear of the mill. This was made easier for the miller by using a yoke fitted on the tailpole which also
had a talthur which raised the access ladder off the grond. The limestone round house at the base of the mill is not attached to it but was added in the 19th century to protect the ground floor wooden substructure. Before 1921 each cloth sail was 1.83 metres (6 feet) across and at one time spanned 18.3 metres (50 feet).

Welcome to Colmworth Function Rooms, Bedford Call 01234 378181
Welcome to Colmworth Function Rooms this is our Bridge Bar named after the bar itself which was salvaged from the Bridge Hotel in Bedford.
The Bridge Bar leads into our main function room Welham Hall you will notice the lovely old windows that originated from The stately home on Welham Green.
As you can see this room boasts gorgeous views over the wonderfully kept golf course. We also have a charming fire to enjoy on those winter days.
Our third room the Bassingbourne can be accessed either by the Bridge Bar as videoed here or by the Welham Hall. This room is on two levels with the small upper tier seating area, leading to a large dancefloor. Which is made from the wood reclaimed for Bassingbourne Barracks.
Although originally designed for parties this room also works well for meetings and business presentations.
Colmworth function rooms are truly unique we have free ample parking with golf and accommodation on site.
