Cette majestueuse abbaye est située dans un champ à l'arrière d'une ferme. Pour certains, elle peut être difficile à localiser. Cependant, une petite enseigne en bordure de la route nous indique son emplacement.
Il n'y a aucun espace officiel de stationnement . Nous avons donc laissé notre voiture sur l'accotement.
Pour s'y rendre, il faut d'abord traverser un enclos qui contient quelques bêtes. Une affiche apposée sur la clôture nous indique clairement de faire attention au taureau. Rien de rassurant!
Je n'arrive pas à déterminer si le taureau est présent parmi ces bêtes. Ce n'est certainement pas moi qui ferai les premiers pas dans cet enclos que je considère déjà comme une arène.
Alain passe donc en premier. Je longe le muret en pierre et le suis de très près. Je me fais le plus discrète possible.
Dans ma tête, j'ai déjà tout planifié! Si le taureau est présent et qu'il s'avance vers nous, j'escalade le muret.
Heureusement, nous avons franchi cette étape sans encombre. Les bêtes étaient plutôt nonchalantes et se sont contentées de nous regarder.
Est-ce que le taureau était dans l'enclos, je n'en ai aucune idée et comme nous devions reprendre le même chemin au retour, j'ai préféré ignorer son existence.
Il pleuvait beaucoup lors de notre passage. Cependant, nous étions déterminés à visiter cette abbaye qui est encore dans un état remarquable malgré qu'elle ait été érigée au XVe siècle.
Il s'agit en fait d'un monastère franciscain, de style gothique, construit par la puissante famille de Burgo. On y retrouve entre autres une église, un cloître ainsi que des bâtiments d'habitation.
On peut visiter l'intérieur de cette abbaye. Il y a deux étages qui sont encore aujourd'hui accessibles. Cependant, comme ce sont des ruines, la prudence est de mise.
On ne peut que s'émerveiller devant la beauté et la sérénité de ce lieu. Les allées du cloître où les frères priaient et méditaient sont parmi les plus belles d'Irlande.
En 1590, Sir Richard Bingham, gouverneur anglais de Connacht, a mis le feu au monastère. Les frères ont été persécutés.
Malgré ce triste événement, la communauté de frères y a habité jusqu'à la fin du XVIIIe siècle.

Moyne Abbey
Moyne Franciscan friary was founded c.1460, by the MacWilliam Burkes, a powerful local family who were generous patrons of the religious orders.
During the 16th century, Moyne friary had housed up to fifty friars, including a large number of students.
However it suffered severe persecution in the late 1570s and early 1580s and was burnt down by Sir Richard Bingham in 1590.
It lay in ruins by 1595.
In the early 17th century, the convent was in the possession of an English widow who lived there. She was possibly the wife of Edmund Barrett, the man who had been granted the friary and its possessions by Elizabeth I in 1595. She rented the church and some other buildings to the friars, with the rent paid on behalf of the friars by Thomas de Burgo, a descendant of the original patron.
The friary church had been kept in good repair up to 1616 at the great expense of the local Catholics who were very generous in the “hope for better times.”

The access may not be evident, as you have to cross a private farm and a pasture with bulls and cows, so here is a video to help you to go there !

Moyne Abbey & Rosserk Friary, Ballina, County Mayo
Moyne Abbey, one of the many National Monuments in County Mayo and an excellent example of an ecclesiastical ruin dating back to 1462, along with Rosserk Friary, one of the best preserved of the Franciscan Friaries, were unfortunately both burnt down by Elizabeth I of England's governor of Connacht, Sir Richard Bingham, in 1590 at part of the reformation.
