Bibliotherapy: a concept that is crucial to the success of independent bookshop Mr B’s Emporium in Bath. Run by Nick Bottomley, who changed jobs in the pursuit of a life revolving entirely around books, this shop depends upon the interaction between his staff and customers and a personal passion for literature. Celebrating the theatre of a book recommendation, the shop is a story in itself and far removed from the solitary pursuit of reading.

BOOKS ARE MY BAG is a nationwide campaign to celebrate bookshops. This collaboration between publishers, bookshops and authors is the biggest ever promotion of bookshops. For many people bookshops conjure fond images of book readings, in-store cafes and delight at the discovery of a new author. And in fact, 56% of all book buying decisions are made by consumers in a bookshop - but we must continue to celebrate - and shop in! - our fabulous high street bookshops (both chains and independents) to ensure they are not under threat.

In These Walls (wives reside)
STOP PRESS: help this song get recorded - the band have a few months to record all their songs - more details here:
The Bookshop Band write songs inspired by books and play them in bookshops. This was one of two songs inspired by the book 'An Evil Eye' by Jason Goodwin. He came in to do an author event at Mr Bs Emporium of Reading Delights, a great independent bookshop in Bath, on the 3rd May 2012.
The book follows the investigations of Turkish investigator Yashim The as he uncovers murder and political intrigue around the Sultan's harem.
The other song we wrote can be found here:

THE LUMINARIES inspired a song, 'Godspeed' by The Bookshop Band
STOP PRESS: help this song get recorded - the band have a few months to record all their songs - more details here:
When Eleanor Catton came to Bath (UK) to talk about her book The Luminaries, we wrote a song inspired by it and played it to her, called GodSpeed. This is that first performance. The event was organised by our local bookshop, Mr Bs Emporium Of Reading Delights.
LYRICS
Godspeed and on my way
Come here to seek a fortune
Arrived on a stormy day
Hoping I'll reach the shoreline
Stepping out, I'm alone
Bearing my name on cases
A town wearing washed up clothes
From boats that didn't make it
Somewhere in the depths of this ship
Cried a stranger (Magdalena)
Somewhere in the depths of this ship
Cried a stranger
So many muddied hands
Washing gold-bearing gravel
All that is flowing down
- Carried by the river
Silt's clogging up the bay
Dangerous to weigh a boat in
Even the lucky stay
Gold is not known for floating
Somewhere in the depths of my mind
Cried a stranger (Magdalena)
Somewhere in the depths of this ship
Cried a stranger
If I am a lucky man
I will be going home
Not on the ship I came
That one has run aground

Midnight at the nursing academy, by The Bookshop Band
STOP PRESS: help this song get recorded - the band have a few months to record all their songs - more details here:
This song is inspired by Ned Beauman's novel The Teleportation Accident (Sceptre / Hodder) and references a fictional 'rare' book of the same name as the song, which the protagonist Ergon Loeser has lost, and spends most of the novel searching for it.
Tis a brilliant read, across continents and set in that very interesting pre-WWII period. Much recommended by the band.
The song was performed when Ned came into our local bookshop, Mr B's Emporium of Reading Delights, in Bath. (

Take it From Dad Audiobook by George Livermore | Audiobook with subtitles
Take it From Dad by George LIVERMORE
Take It From Dad is a collection of letters written by a father to his son, Ted, at boarding school, away from home for the first time. In each letter Dad comments on some aspect of Ted's experience, attitude, or behavior, illustrating and driving home his point with an entertaining tale about human nature. This book is appropriate for all ages from adolescence on, and its lessons are as relevant today as when they were written. --Lee Smalley
