Tra Que Herb Village | Hoian Ancient Town | Hoian Attractions | Quang Nam
Tra Que is a small village located 3km north of Hoi An’s Old Town. Its location is between De Vong River and Tra Que alga pond. Thanks to the special condition of rich soil and water, the village has long been known for growing many kinds of vegetables: lettuce, salad, houttuynia, flagrant knoutwed, basil and coriander vegetables etc, with which the traditional specialities of Hoi An have gained part of their fame. The village is named after the sweet scented vegetables that spice up the everyday meals of the Hoi An people.

Hoi An -VIETNAM-
Hoi An is a town on the central vietnamese coast and is a well-preserved example of the important southeast asian trading port from the 15th-19th centuries. Already a common stop for backpackers it is becoming better known to tourists. On the 14th day of each lunar month, the town trades its electric lights for traditional coloured lanterns. Sights include the Japanese Covered Bridge and the Quan Cong Temple. Let the town´s expert tailors make you some bespoke clothing. Hoi Ann is a clean and charming place with the best vietnamese cuisine. Rent out a bike and explore routes to any of the beaches... I feel so good in this town!

Trieu Khuc village festival and Con đĩ đánh bồng dancing
The Trieu Khuc village festival held annually on the 9th day of the first lunar month features traditional Con đĩ đánh bồng dancing, which dates back hundreds of years.
This year was no exception as hundreds came out for the centuries old festival that took place on February 13 at Tan Trieu commune in the Thanh Tri district of Hanoi that also featured a number of other traditional dances such as Sinh Tien, unicorn and dragon.
The centuries old folk dance had a unique twist because dancers were in reality men cross dressing and disguising themselves as young girls. Any man who was brave enough to dress up in women’s traditional attire was eligible to enter the contest!
All in all it was lots of fun for everyone to watch men with handkerchiefs on their head, embroidered shoes, colourful ribbons, bamboo fans and drums in front of their chest using plastic balls stuffed with cotton as fake breasts.

What a Japanese Nursing Home is Like
In this video, we go on a tour of a couple of Azalee's Nursing Homes in Japan. In Japan, hospitals and clinics must be non-profit and owned and operated by physicians. Health care costs are standardized across the country, with no single physicians able to charge a different price for a procedure.
However, non-medical expenses, such as room and board in a nursing home, are up to the discretion of the respective facilities. While costs at Azalee vary patient by patient, Dr. Kurusu, the chairman of the Azalee Group, estimated that a patient might pay about $2,000USD a month for all expenses, including food, lodging, and their portion of medical costs (the Japanese government covers 90% of medical expenses for seniors).

Tet Doan Ngo - the mid-summer festival in Hanoi
Friday was Tet Doan Ngo- the mid-summer point in the Vietnamese calendar and a day for rituals to ward off the pests of the summer heat. There's plenty of summer heat in Hanoi right now too. The rituals are rooted in traditional village life and date back centuries. I managed to get a little taste of Tet Doan Ngo in Hanoi with a young architect and owner of Kofi cafe, Mr Cao Trung Hieu. We talked about how these traditions are holding in modern life over a glass of ruou nep - a traditional sticky rice liquor consumed specially on this day.

Vietnamese Food - The BEST Breakfast I Ate in Saigon (Bánh Mì Hòa Mã)
One of the best times to eat Vietnamese street food is for breakfast. Read the full article here:
Because I love food so much, one of my favorite things to do when I travel is wake up early and go to the morning markets and proceed to explore the local cuisine for breakfast. In many countries I’ve been to, breakfast is one of the best meals because the food is fresh, and people are on their way to school and work and need something quick and delicious to grab, or sit down, and eat. In Vietnam, though you’ll find street food and restaurants open around the clock, I still think the the best food and some of the best selection of food was available in the morning.
One of the recommendations I got from many of you was to try a breakfast restaurant called Bánh Mì Hòa Mã, extremely famous throughout Saigon for serving bánh mì ốp la, or the Vietnamese personal baguettes served with a personal pan of fried sunny side up eggs. The combination, though simple and pretty easy to make, can be exceptionally delicious. So one day when I was in Saigon, I walked over to Bánh Mì Hòa Mã. The restaurant is actually housed in an indoor facility, and all the cooking is done indoors, but all the seating is along the side of the alley street, where they set up small plastic tables and chairs.
I arrived at the Vietnamese breakfast street food stall right as they were opening, just after 7 am, and luckily I got a good table, and Ying and I were one of the first people to eat there for the morning - but soon after we sat down, many other hungry breakfast eater came to sit down. I ordered just the standard plate of bánh mì ốp la, which didn’t take long to come out of the kitchen, sizzling hot. The eggs were scorched on the edges on the bottom of the little personal pan, and the tops of the eggs were still runny, rich and creamy. Along with my pan of op la, fried sunny side up eggs, I got a personal baguette, called banh mi, a side dish of pickled cucumbers and carrots, and an extra side dish of pate, just for fun.
The eggs were also topped with a few scoops of caramelized, extremely fragrant onions and chilies, and along with a selection of Vietnamese sausage, which I think was pre-fried in a different pan and then added to the top of the eggs, artfully thrown on. The bits of meat and the onions provided some extremely flavor to the eggs and the crusty banh mi, and I think that’s the flavor that really elevated this banh mi op la to extreme delicious, best breakfast I ate in Vietnam status.
For some bites I would scoop on a bit of pate to my pieces of super crusty baguette, then sop up the beautiful egg yolk, and bits of meat. It was truly a breakfast to remember, one of the finest breakfasts I’ve eaten anywhere in the world. On the table, there was also some Chinese tea, which went well with the rich breakfast. They also had coffee, but since I had just had a cup before coming to eat, I didn’t have one.

Vietnam’s northwestern culture converges at Dien Bien Ban Flower Festival.
March is the month when Ban (Bhauhinia) flowers bloom in Vietnam’s northwest and Dien Bien province organizes its Ban Flower Festival to honor, preserve, and promote local culture and boost its tourism.
The ban flower is typical of Vietnam’s northwestern region. The flower symbolizes the culture, soul, and pride of people in Dien Bien, Son La, Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, and Hoa Binh province.
Targest Ban flower growing area, Dien Bien province, in recent years has held an annual ban flower festival in March to introduce its landscape, culture, and people and boost local tourism. Taking place from March 11th to 14th this year, the festival coincides with the 5th Dien Bien Culture, Sports, and Tourism Days.
It features a range of cultural and sports activities plus a special opening performance on Sunday at the May 7 Square. Le Van Quy is Vice Chairman of the Dien Bien Provincial People’s Committee: “The opening of the festival features a combination of the contemporary and traditional cultures of Dien Bien province and the beauty of ban flowers. There are a range of activities taking place in the city, districts, townships, and villages during the Ban Flower Festival and Dien Bien Culture and Tourism Days.”
During the Ban Flower Festival is was an exhibition featuring the culture and tradition of ethnic minorities in Dien Bien, performances of local songs, dances and musical instruments, and showcases of ethnic folk festivals and rituals.
Mr. Quy said Dien Bien province has 21 ethnic groups and each of them has its own customs and culture which create a colorful picture for the festival: “At this year’s festival, we organized a number of new activities including a beauty contest which drew contestants from 8 northwestern provinces. Organizing this contest, we wanted to introduce Dien Bien, its land and people. The contest created an opportunity for 8 northwestern provinces to share experience in boosting tourism. We will also organize a series of cultural events including a celebration of the historic Dien Bien Phu victory on May 7th to attract more tourists.”
At the Ban Flower Festival, visitors were invited to sample local food including dishes made from flowers such as the ban flower salad of the Thai. Lo Thi Tieu Oanh of Noong Chun village in Dien Bien city said: “The Thai people make various dishes from ban flowers, but the most popular one is ban salad. The taste of the flower can be mixed with vegetables and bamboo shoots to create a very special flavor.”
At this time of the year, ban flowers are in bloom. Their pink and white colors and fragrance pervade the roads to Dien Bien drawing tourists to the northwestern region.

Thanks to Frank and Jerry of Zouba Tours: for taking me around. I paid for this tour, but they did a great job and I would recommend them.
Kunming, Yunnan, China - Kunming is the capital and largest city in Yunnan province China. So I was excited to explore the local market in Kunming and eat as much street food as possible!
Here are all the Chinese street food dishes we ate throughout the market:
Rice pudding - 5 RMB ($0.76) - This was slightly fermented, and sweet, like a rice alcohol pudding. It was pretty good, but quite sweet, so I couldn’t eat that much of it.
Dumpling - 1 RMB ($0.15) - I saw these dumplings sizzling and hissing and there was no way I could walk by without trying one. Stuffed inside were leek and egg. They were a little on the oily side, but delicious.
Whole duck - 20 RMB ($3.03) - Yunnan is famous for roast duck, and there’s a version that’s comparable even to Beijing style. Style I was excited to find a stall that at the market that specialize in Yunnanese roast duck. It was delicious and the owners were very friendly as well.
Pickled pears - 5 RMB ($0.76) - This was an interesting snack, and supposed to be very healthy and good for digestion.
Drink - 2 RMB ($0.30) - This drink was incredible sweet, but refreshing.
Tofu Noodles - 5.5 RMB ($0.83) - Another extremely popular Chinese street food snack at the market was tofu noodles - I’ve had tofu and noodles, but not really mixed before. It was a little plain and starchy, but from all the sauces, it was taty.
Rice balls - 5 RMB ($0.76) - We also tried sesame rice balls which were delicious.
Jacuzzi braised ½ chicken - 15 RMB ($2.27) - This was one of the highlights of the market for me, mainly because the owner was so friendly and his giant jacuzzi of boiling chickens was amazing to see! The chicken was a little bony, but flavorful.
Yellow soybean porridge - 3.5 RMB ($0.53) - As we were leaving the market, we stopped for one last bowl of soybean porridge to eat with youtiau, Chinese donuts. I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did, but it was delicious. It was very warming and hearty.
Finally to complete this Chinese street food tour in Kunming, Jerry and I, along with his family ate Chinese Yunnanese bbq. It was tasty and a great way to end this amazing day of street food.
Special thanks to Zouba Tours ( for arranging everything in this video. I paid for this tour, but I think they did a great job, and I thoroughly enjoyed the food and the tour.
That completes Day 4 of this Chinese food tour of Yunnan. If you haven’t already, watch the full series here:
