From their small Posin Art Salon gallery in south-west Berlin's Neukolln area Evgeni, Michail and Semyon Posin create state-of-the art copies of iconic masterpieces.
Their imitations have earned them a reputation as among the most ingenious art forgers of the 21st century, with works that have not only stirred Berlin's art scene, but recreated some of the world's finest historical pieces that were lost or stolen using photographs of the absent paintings.
The artists are part of a growing number of specialists painting legal reproductions that avoid copyright issues by leaving the painting unsigned and only emulating artists who have been dead for at least 70 years. Using the same materials, techniques and brushstrokes of their originators their faithful fakes sell for tens of thousands of euros a piece.

Sorolla: Master of Light at London's National Gallery | Exhibitions | Showcase
Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida is quite possibly one of the most famous artists you have never heard of. A Spanish master lauded for his incredible skill at portraying light and colour, he even has a museum named after him. And yet, outside his native Spain, his name is not often heard. That's all about to change, as London's prestigious National Gallery stages the first 'major retrospective' of his work in more than 100 years. And Miranda Atty was at the opening.

Vladimir Stozharov: A collection of 58 paintings (HD)
Description: Vladimir Fedorovich Stozharov lived a brief life but left a lasting mark in Russian art.
Corresponding member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR, Honored Artist of Russian Federation, Laureate of State award after I. Repin ( gold medal ), V. Stozharov was a very talented and efficient artist and created more than two thousand paintings. Landscape, still-life and genre are the central subjects of his creative work.
An artist of great capacity V. Stozharov is known for his still-lives “Bread, Salt and Bratina“, “Flax“( The Tretyakov gallery ), “Bread” , “Green Apples”, “Kvas”, “An ancient Suleya”, “Tea with Kalaches”, and very many others.
He travelled a lot in his country and abroad. In 1960-s V. Stozharov started to do painting trips in Russian North. He was interested in remote corners of the country where the original wooden buildings and uncommon characters were still preserved. He was fascinated with “white nights”, bright sunsets, gloomy lowering clouds of northern skies and original architecture of the countryside, hence his wonderful works “The white night”, “Pokrov”, housed in the Russian Museum in St.Petersburg.
The painting trips to Italy ( 1959, 1967 ), France ( 1960 ), and Romania ( 1972 ) brought a great many works. The picturesque and dramatic manner of the artist’s painting is quite original and distinguishing.
Stozharov’s works can be found in galleries and private collections in USA, Great Britain, Germany, Japan, Korea, Finland, Austria, other European countries and more than 80 museums and galleries of the former Soviet Union.

Moscow museum gathers all Russia's Jordaens works
(18 Sep 2019) LEAD IN:
Moscow's Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts is drawing together all works by Flemish painter Jacob Jordaens that are owned by Russian museums.
Jordaens was one of the most prominent painters of the Flemish school, alongside Rubens and van Dyck.
STORY-LINE:
Russian Jordaens is an exhibition of all the painters' works owned by Russian museums.
Earlier this year, 18 paintings were first shown to the public at The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.
Now, 18 paintings and 31 drawings have arrived in Moscow.
Our task was to show - using eloquent and characteristic exemplars - the artistic evolution of this wonderful Flemish painter. And to show all his masterpieces, including paintings and drawings, owned by Russian museums, explains curator Vadim Sadkov.
For the first time since 1794, Jordaens' The Lamentation has left St. Petersburg, where it hangs at Saint Alexander Nevsky Monastery.
It was Empress of Russia, Catherine the Great, who purchased Jordaens' monumental The Lamentation from a Berlin collection.
She later donated it to the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in St. Petersburg.
It was always thought that the painting was by Flemish master Rubens, but several years ago, Dutch art historian Arnout Balis identified that was in fact by Jordaens.
The works of Flemish artists such as Jordaens were heavily influenced by Rubens.
Many painters trained at the master's studio, including young Anthony van Dyck, who went on to become one of Flemish Baroque's greatest.
Here is the history of Russian collecting, and its close link to the history of collecting in Western Europe, says Sadkov.
Empress Catherine the Great began buying Flemish artists for her palaces.
But she was not the only one interested in the Dutch masters. Russian aristocrats followed her example and started to collect paintings of Flemish masters, including Jordaens.
Odysseus and Polyphemus, a painting from a collection of Rubens, was brought to Russia in the 18th century and was in hands of the noble family of Musin-Pushkin, then belonged to a Hermitage curator Osip Braz.
After Braz was sent to a Soviet prison camp, the state confiscated his collection.
Today it's in the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts' collection.
Jordaens was born in Antwerp, Belgium in in 1593.
He was a student of Adam van Noort, a Belgium painter, who also taught Rubens.
Jordaens is famous for painting religious stories, metaphors on life and people of his time, as well as collaborating with artists such as Andries Daniels and Paul De Vos.
These are the scenes from the Old Testament, allegoric portraits, portraits commissioned by burghers of Antwerpen, as well as his collaborations with other artists, including still life painters, says Sadkov.
The exhibit is showcasing another recent discovery.
During the restoration process of Christ and the Samaritan Woman, specialists were able to find the signature of Jordaens' son, also called Jacob.
In the process of restoration, a signature of the son of Jordaens was discovered, says Vadim Sadkov.
His name is also Jacob, but he is Junior. And it is written there - Jacob Jordaens Junior. And this painting is the only one valid work of the son. And this painting belongs to the museum in Nizhny Novgorod and is now shown here.
Meleager and Atalanta was always considered to be a copy of a Jordaens paintings, but - again during the restoration process - specialists discovered the painter's signature.

Timken Museum of Art: The Russian Collection, San Diego, California
The museum displays European old master paintings, sculptures, and tapestries. The museum's also features an extensive collection of Russian icons spanning the period from the 15th to the 20th century. This collection is featured in this video.
The groundwork for the museum was laid in 1951 when Walter Ames helped sisters Amy and Anne Putnam to form the nonprofit Putnam Foundation to own and manage their art collection. The sisters had settled in San Diego in the early 20th century and made donations to the San Diego Museum of Art in its early years. At first the Foundation loaned items from its collection to noteworthy museums across the United States. When the Timken Museum opened in 1965, the Putnam Foundation Collection provided its initial material and Walter Ames became its first director.
Landmark Louvre exhibition of master painter Vermeer opens
(21 Feb 2017) LEAD-IN:
The luminous strokes of the Dutch master painter Johannes Vermeer are in a special exhibition at the Louvre in Paris.
The museum believes the twelve works on show make up the largest collection of the artist's paintings in the world.
STORY-LINE:
This is being heralded as a major exhibition of Johannes Vermeer's works.
The show, entitled Vermeer and the Masters of Genre Painting, re-interprets the artist through the context of his time.
It demonstrates what he took and what he rejected from his contemporaries such as Gerard Dou, Jan Steen or Pieter de Kooch whose works are displayed next to Vermeer's.
Louvre curator Blaise Duclos says: This exhibition is quite unique I believe because there are seventy paintings at the show, and twelve paintings by Vermeer, so it is a great occasion for people, not only from Paris but from abroad to come and have a look at such a reunion. I do not believe that any museum at this very moment can present so many Vermeers.
Among the paintings is The Milkmaid from around 1660 , on loan from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and Woman Holding a Balance, on loan from the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC.
Although his reputation dwindled after this death, Vermeer is now considered to be an artist from Dutch Golden Age of painting.
Duclos explains: Genre painting is a specific type of painting. The representation of daily activities, music playing for example. But of course it is very orchestrated, it's theatrics in a way. It's like comedy, but not merrymaking. It's all about the refined taste of the period.
But Vermeer, the unique jewel in Dutch painting's crown, copied ideas from his contemporaries like every other artist according to Duclos.
Five years in the making, Vermeer and the Masters of Genre Painting presents a third of the Dutch Golden Age master's complete opus to the public, and it is the biggest such collection of the old master's work in Europe in almost two decades.
Duclos says: His themes are very classical. Music making, lacemaking, that has been done before. But actually he transmutes, he translates, he puts on a pedestal his themes and he has a distinct specific psychology. There is a mood in Vermeer that you do not find in other paintings.
He explains: The Astronomer and The Geographer are a case in point because it seems so natural to have a scholar, an astronomer for example, in his study in broad daylight, how very natural. But when you consider other paintings by predecessors, by forerunners like Gerard Dou we have here in the show, a painting from Los Angeles, or one from Leiden in the Netherlands, then you see astronomers at work by night. Well that is perhaps the most traditional way to represent the astronomer because he is observing the sky, the stars and so you see this small revolution that Vermeer was undergoing, or having paintings undergo because he changes that, he reverses the perspective and suddenly he gets the light of reason of scientific knowledge enter the space.
According to the Louvre the genius of Vermeer, who died aged 43, and having produced just 36 paintings, can be seen in how he transformed rehashed themes and techniques.
The exhibition runs from February 22 until May 22 at the Louvre in Paris, before travelling to the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC in the fall.

Masters of the Golden Age: Harvey Dunn and His Students - Gallery Tour
Masters of the Golden Age: Harvey Dunn and His Students
November 7, 2015 through March 6, 2016
Norman Rockwell Museum, Stockbridge, Massachusetts
Norman Rockwell Museum and South Dakota Art Museum are honored to present the first major exhibition celebrating the art and legacy of American illustration master, Harvey Dunn. A brilliant and prolific illustrator of America’s Golden Age, Dunn was a prodigy of legendary artist Howard Pyle, and an admired teacher in his own right. Born on a homestead near Manchester, South Dakota, he left the farm to study at the South Dakota Agricultural College and the Art Institute of Chicago before becoming one of Pyle’s most accomplished students—along with N.C. Wyeth and Frank E. Schoonover—and eventually opened his own studios in Wilmington, Delaware, and in Leonia and Tenafly, New Jersey. Of his mentor, Dunn said, “Pyle’s main purpose was to quicken our souls so that we might render service to the majesty of simple things.”
In 1906, Dunn obtained his first advertising commission from the Keuffel and Esser Company of New York, and throughout his prodigious career, he created painterly illustrations for the most prominent periodicals of his day, including Scribner’s, Harper’s, Collier’s Weekly, Century, Outing, and The Saturday Evening Post. Exceptional examples of Dunn’s art for publication are featured in this exhibition, which also highlights the artist’s powerful work for the American Expeditionary Forces, recording the unforgettable realities of combat. During World War I, Dunn was one of eight war artists assigned to the American Expeditionary Forces in France. He struggled emotionally as a result of his wartime experiences, but found solace in painting visions of the prairie, inspired by his boyhood memories and his love of South Dakota’s landscape and history.
This exhibition is a collaboration of Norman Rockwell Museum and South Dakota Art Museum, Generous support has been provided by First Bank & Trust
This Exhibition next appears:
June 24, 2016 - September 15, 2016
Hunter Museum of American Art, Chattanooga, Tennessee
Previous Exhibition Venue:
May 5, 2015 - September 13, 2015

Palekh icon-painting: At the crossroads of Eastern and Western traditions
Today, Palekh, a small village in the Ivanovo region, is known primarily for its local handicraft: Palekh lacquer miniature. Few know that the origins of this fabulous painting style lie in the art of icon painting.
By Pavel Inzhelevsky, Ilaria Kantorova, Igor Davydov
The Old Russian village of Palekh is located 350 km north-east of Moscow on the Golden Ring. Drawing from a mix of Fryazh and Stroganov icon-painting styles, the Palekh masters created their own unique manner. Palekh icon-painting flourished in the beginning of the 19th century. Icons from the region were sold throughout Russia and abroad. Palekh painters were in demand at the very highest level. They were commissioned to paint the walls of the Kremlin's Granovitaya Chamber, and restore the frescoes of the cathedrals of the Moscow Kremlin, the Novodevichy Convent, the Cathedral of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, as well as cathedrals and churches in Pskov and many other Russian cities.
The showpiece Palekh icon is Akathist Hymn to the Saviour of the mid-eighteenth century. An akathist is a eulogy sung in church. Hymns, liturgical texts, and poetic texts praising the glory of Christ and the Holy Mother are found in many Palekh works. This musical basis is reflected in the composition structure, in the color rhythm of the icons. In akathists from the middle of the 18th century, the 1870s to be precise, we see the defining feature of Palekh painting: the combination of Fryazh painting (dimensionality) and late-Stroganov (plasticity of figures). And here we see highly complex composite constructions. Palekh icon painters preferred complex, multi-figured compositions.
When the Bolsheviks seized power, icon painting came to an abrupt halt. But quite unexpectedly, the Palekh masters found a new niche in the production of lacquer miniatures.
