Mount Hutt opens for 2019 season
The bosses of one of the South Island's major ski fields hope recent improvements will continue to drive visitor numbers up. Mount Hutt opened today for the 2019 ski season, with some keen skiers and snowboarders waiting almost half a day to be the first down the slopes this year. Our South Island video journalist, Logan Church, was there.

It's official. Ellen and I are now living in New Zealand after 2 years in Bali, Indonesia and we got a chance to catch up with Phil and Alicia only a few months in for a snow trip.

Today we are following local recommendations to check out the Awa Awa Reserve walks at the base of Mt Hutt. It’s one of the awesome things to do in Mt Hutt when the mountain is closed or during summer.
We hit the Mt Hutt walks at the base of Mt Hutt in the Awa Awa Reserve. There are many different tracks ranging from 15 minutes to 2 hours. It’s an awesome example of New Zealand native forest with lots of New Zealand birds like fantails and rifleman.
After our walks at Mt Hutt, we go back into Methven New Zealand and have some lunch at the Arabica Cafe in Methven. Tonight, we check out Cinema Paradiso in Methven which is a New Zealand boutique cinema.

Jye Kearney (and the mega storm) hits Canterbury, New Zealand!
Australian professional snowboarder Jye Kearney is back in New Zealand! This time he gets thrown into an adventure that bucks him from the norm of his usual routine. From Christchurch Airport, the crew make their way to Mount Hutt, Canterbury's largest resort for some mind boggling spring park wizardry. The atmosphere changes rapidly however when the biggest storm of the year hits and blankets the whole Canterbury region with fresh snow. This leads the crew to Mount Olympus, where Jye recounts his tale of riding a 'nutcracker' rope tow.
Needless to say, Jye is once again smiling from ear to ear as the crew build some interesting features and get creative in arguably one of the most beautiful places to snowboard downunder. Spring rules!

Wayne Sutton aged 72 having a magnificent day, with mate Brian Odonoghue, September 19th 2018. Skiing 648 vertical metres, non stop from top of mountain to bottom chair lifts in 3 min 52 Seconds carrying 2 Ski poles in left hand with phone camera in the other. This is the only way I know how to share how exhilarating and orgasmic skiing really is. I challenge you to have one with me.
