PHILIPPINES: SEARCH FOR PLANE CRASH VICTIMS
Natural Sound
Rain and difficult terrain are hampering efforts to find the remains of 17 people where they died in a plane crash in the northern Philippines.
The 'Asian Spirit' twin-engine Czech-made Let410 aircraft crashed on Tuesday - three foreign citizens were also on board.
The country's national disaster agency said soldiers and police who climbed the mountain were having difficulty carrying the bodies because of slippery trails.
Continuous rain and fog are preventing helicopters from approaching this crash site in the northern Philippines.
Soldiers had to carry the remains by foot through the rough terrain, and cross a swollen river through a hanging bridge made of rope.
Bad weather has hampered the search and rescue operations and delayed the recovery of the victims' bodies.
So far only four have been brought back to the capital Manila, the rest are still to be transported back.
The Asian Spirit plane, carrying 15 passengers and two crew from Manila to Cauayan in Isabela province, slammed into a mountain and plunged into a ravine in Kasibu in Nueva Vizcaya province, about 95 kilometres (60 miles) from its destination.
Air transport officials say the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
But bad weather at the time of the crash prompted authorities to close the Cauayan airport an hour after the plane was scheduled to arrive.
Defence Secretary Orlando Mercado, said soldiers and police who climbed the mountain where the aircraft crashed were experiencing difficulties carrying the bodies .
SOUNDBITE: (English)
The weather was bad. It still continues to be bad. As far as the terrain is concerned, the difficulties of bringing down the bodies is compounded by the fact that the roads are slippery and in some instances there are no roads because it is a mountainous and forested area. However, we intend to recover all bodies and by tomorrow (Friday), we will begin the painful job of identifying. This is not going to be easy because only one body is not burnt. The rest are burned in various degrees.

Despite the bad weather, relatives cannot be kept away from the operations centre as they wait for the remains of their loved ones to be brought home.
The victims include Japanese passenger forty-seven-year-old Koji Takuma from Oita prefecture. He was project manager of a Sumitomo road construction project in Isabela, a Sumitomo official said.
The two other foreign citizens were the plane's Filipino-American co-pilot, Glenn del Rosario, and a British passport holder, Robert Sinnaott.
Asian Spirit began operating in 1996 after the liberalisation of the Philippine airline industry.
It specialises in low-volume domestic routes and has nine planes, including the one that crashed.
