BACKGROUND
Centuries ago, the Spaniards aboard their galleons to Manila Bay noticed the form of a giant parrot, perched in the forested mountains in Cavite. They named it “Pico de Loro” – “Parrot’s Peak” Today, mountaineers who visit Pico de Loro discover that it is as enchanting as its name. High on Cavite’s highest point, they could behold the rocky tower that the Spanish sailors once saw as the parrot’s beak, and they could gaze towards South China Sea where the galleons once sailed, all the way to the historic island fort of Corregidor. Gusts of sea breeze reach the peak, refreshing hikers after a four-hour climb. The peak’s rocky outcropping is dramatic, and sharply contrasts with the plains of Cavite and the waters of South China Sea.

Episode 01 of 04 of Cavite Getaway featuring Mt. Palay-Palay / Mataas na Gulod Protected Ladscape, along with Mount Pico de Loro, which forms part of Destination: Philippines, a weekly one-hour ecotourism and responsible travel television program, created and produced by RV925 Ventures in 2012 for NET 25.
By and large, Destination: Philippines highlights, first and foremost, development efforts in the country’s long list of great travel destinations, updates on activities and news regarding Philippine ecotourism, over and above significant environmental and social concerns.
On the whole, Destination: Philippines is more than a travelogue. It does not only offers TV viewers with loads of relevant information on some of the country’s most opulent sought after “hotspots,” it also seeks to raise awareness about being socially and ecologically responsible while traveling.
Destination: Philippines, in effect, endeavors to positively portray Philippines as a must-see travel destination at home and internationally, not only because of its enviable, extraordinary and impressive tourism potentials but also due to its vital and substantial efforts to make travel and tourism more sustainable.
In essence, Destination: Philippines is about having fun on vacation without hurting the environment!
Our previous episodes featured, among others, development efforts in some of the country’s ideal tourist destinations: Ilagan Sanctuary, Ilagan, Isabela; Hundred Islands, Alaminos, Pangasinan; Bataan Natural Park and Roosevelt Protected Landscape in Bataan; Hinulugang Taktak National Park and Pamitinan Protective Landscape in Rizal; La Mesa Eco-Park and Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center in Quezon City; Mt. Isarog Natural Park and Panicuason Hot Springs in Camarines Sur; Taal Volcano Protected Landscape in Batangas; Mt. Palay Palay/Mataas na Gulod Protected Landscape and Mt. Pico de Loro in Cavite; Penablanca Protected Landscape and Seascape in Cagayan; and the Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras, vis-à-vis sustainable tourism, over and above other environment concerns.

To get to Pico de Loro you have to take the bus all the way to Nasugbu then transfer to a tricycle for a 35-45 minute ride. Our bus left the DLTB Co. station at Buendia Bus Terminal at 9:20 am and cost 110 pesos per person. We arrived in Nasugbu around noon. We then paid 400 pesos for the roundtrip tricycle ride; the drivers stayed with us and actually completed the hike with us, which was fun.
The hike took us about 3.5 hours not including the 30 or so minutes we spent at the peak marveling at the wonderful 360 degree view of the mountains and ocean. This hike is much more intense than Mount Batulao and requires a higher level of fitness due to the several long stretches of steep mountain. If we recall correctly, there were at least two uphill portions of the hike that took at least 20-30 minutes each to complete. Fortunately, most of the hike winds through trees, which provides excellent coverage from the sun. Be sure to take water and snacks with you because there are no vendors on or near the mountain!
If you have more time in your itinerary, then we suggest staying at least one night in Nasugbu, which looked like a quaint town. There are lots of beautiful beaches and coves to explore in the area.
thank you for watching!!

Mt. Marami Silyang Bato Dayhike - Maragondon, Cavite
Weekend hike to Mt. Marami. Unexpectedly lengthy (around 21km) to hike to the summit! The heat of the sun was been compensated by river crossings and fresh mountain breeze. After all this, you'll be rewarded by the view of the pillars called Silyang-Bato, a cascade of walls from an ancient stratovolcano, with the 360 view of Mt. Pico De Loro, Maculot, Talamitam and Batulao from a far! Truely a worthwhile hike if you are up for the challenge!

Mount Pico de Loro or Palay-Palay, is a dormant volcano in Cavite province on the island of Luzon, Philippines. The mountain rises to an elevation of 688 m (2,257 ft) above mean sea level and is the highest peak of the Mounts Palay-Palay–Mataas-na-Gulod Protected Landscape. The mountain is one of the ancient volcanic features of Bataan Arc.
The Kaybiang Tunnel, the country’s longest underground highway tunnel at 300 meters was opened along the Ternate-Nasugbu Road piercing through Mt. Pico De Loro’s north ridge, that shortens the travel time from Manila to the western coves of Cavite and Nasugbu, Batangas (en.wikipedia.org).

El Fraile Island (Fort Drum), Ternate, Cavite
Aerial videos of El Fraile Island (Fort Drum), Ternate, Cavite, Philippines Fort Drum (El Fraile Island), also known as the concrete battleship, is a heavily fortified island situated at the mouth of Manila Bay in the Philippines, due south of Corregidor Island. The reinforced concrete fortress shaped like a battleship, was built by the United States in 1909 as one of the harbor defenses at the wider South Channel entrance to the bay during the American colonial period. It was captured and occupied by the Japanese during World War II, and was recaptured by the U.S. after igniting oil and gasoline in the fort, leaving it permanently out of commission. (wikipedia)
