Engyoji Temple (円教寺), Himeji City
Engyoji Temple (円教寺) is located in Himeji City (姫路市) of Hyogo Prefecture in Japan. Located over a height of 1000 feet on top of Mt. Shosha, this temple is also called Shoshazan Engyoji. It is Temple #27 in the Saikoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage of Western Japan. Some scenes of Tom Cruise's movie The Last Samurai were shot at this temple precincts. From top of the mountain you can see great views of Himeji City and the Seto Inland Sea.

Mt. Shosha 書写山 - The Last Samurai
I visited Mt. Shosha (書写山) which lies on the edge of Himeji City in Hyogo Prefecture. Due to its beautiful views and lack of modernization this place is often used as a filming location for movies and TV dramas, including The Last Samurai. Plus the view from the rope-way was is hard to beat. I highly recommend visiting if you are in Himeji, especially if you want a break from the city...
Hope you enjoy the video. Thanks for watching.

Ropeway to Mt. Shosha Japan - View of HIMEJI City - Riding to Enmyoji Temple
Pardon the reflection.
This ride is short but has a nice view of the city of Himeji. The temple complex was where certain scenes of The Last Samurai were filmed.

Mount Shosha (Shoshazan) is where Engyoji (Engyōji), an atmospheric temple complex with a history of over 1000 years, is situated. Located at the end of Himeji City, the mountain can be reached in only 30 minutes from the city center by bus and ropeway.
Engyoji's temple buildings are spread in a wide, densely forested area on the top of the mountain. From the ropeway station it takes a 10 to15 minute walk uphill to reach Niomon Gate, and another 10 to15 minutes to reach the Maniden, a beautiful wooden temple hall, built on pillars on a steep slope. Or, you can take a minibus operating between the upper ropeway station and the Maniden every 20 minutes for 500 yen.

Mt. Shosha & Engyo-ji | Hyogo
Bonjour mina-san !
A bientôt !

Ringing a huge Japanese bell at Engyoji Temple, Mt. Shosha near Himeji, Japan
Usually these bells are only sounded at festivals or special events, but this one was on the walking path. The small sign said that it was to be rung for the benifit of all beings, so I invited it to sound.
Atmospheric Tendai Buddhist temple complex was used for the set in movie The Last Samurai, it's right outside of Himeji and can easily be reached by bus + a gondola ride up the mountain. Great side trip if you are visiting Himeji castle (Himeji-jo).
Himeji Mount Shosha Engyoji Temple
Scenes from the Last Samurai were filmed here and an incredibly beautiful experience high above Himeji. There are many shrines and trails throughout Mount Shosha.

Shoshazan temples - Himeji - Japan (書寫山圓教寺)
Une expérience à couper le souffle dans les deux sens du terme.
Sur les hauteurs de Himeji, une balade au Shoshazan Engyō-ji (書寫山圓教寺) avec mon pote Farid
Temple assez connu par le film : The Last Samurai !

Hiking Mount Takamikurayama, near Himeji Japan (Kansai’s best 100 mountains, #57)
Mount Takamikurayama (Elevation:304m)
Location: Hyogo Prefecture, Kakogawa city (Day trip from Kobe, Himeji).
(Google Map: )
Walking time: 3hrs 10mins
Distance: 7kms total
Difficulty: Beginner level
Climbing season: mid-March ~ end-November
Notes: Also known as Harima Fuji (though I'm not sure why to be honest, it doesn't resemble Fuji at all haha). A lovely, easy hike mostly along the horseshoe shaped ridge of the small but lovely “Harima Alps”, with sweeping views, and some pretty shrines along the way.
Music: Gentle Autumn Rain, from the Album Silk, by Richard Goldsworthy
ROUTE DIRECTIONS:
Disclaimer: The directions only represent my personal experience. I accept no responsibility for any losses or injuries resulting from following these directions. Hike safe!
Starting point:
Walk through the giant silver arches, and buy a drink from the vending machine if you don’t already have one. Walk up the street until you see the shrine entrance on your left. Head up the steps, turn left, go through the small red arch, then gate (to keep wild boar out), then turn right when you intersect with another path. From here it’s a steady uphill to the top of the 1st peak, Takanosuyama. There are quite a few sections of exposed rock, so be sure to wear some shoes with good grip.
After Takanosuyama, it’s an easy up/down trail all the way across the ridge to Takamikurayama. There is only one junction, where you should take the right fork. The views are lovely on both sides. There is also an atmospheric shrine atop the mountain.
The final climb down can be a bit slippery, but is an easy trip down back to civilization. Turn right and down the hill when you reach the junction under the big power pole, and follow the track straight down to the small man-made lake and parking lot:
From here it’s about a 15min walk straight ahead along the road until you arrive back at the starting point, Kashima shrine bus stop.
Tip: If you start early morning like I did, it’s worth a trip back to Kashima shrine to see it bathed in the morning light. Gorgeous.
