Mount Akita-Komagatake in Autumn: Brilliant Foliage Attracts Visitors | Nippon.com: Japan in Video

Mount Akita-Komagatake in Senboku, Akita Prefecture (spanning the border with Iwate Prefecture), is a popular destination especially during the summer, when its many alpine plants are in bloom. But it is also well worth visiting in the autumn, when its slopes are full of brilliant foliage. On weekends many come to hike and take pictures. The leaves start turning at the summit, with an elevation of 1,637 meters, late in September, and the foliage season is at its height from early through mid-October. The leaves of the alpine Aleutian avens (chinguruma) turn deep red, and this colorful carpet is dotted with the yellow and orange colors of maple trees (kaede). Near the summit visitors can enjoy a view of Lake Tazawa (Tazawa-ko), whose blue surface stands out against the autumnal tints of the mountain slopes.

A road up the side of the mountain ends at a parking lot by the entrance to the paths extending to the summit. But private vehicles are not permitted to use this road on weekends and holidays through the end of October. Visitors can park their cars at Arupa Komakusa, a facility on the Tazawa-ko Plateau (Tazwa-ko Kōgen) with hot springs open to day visitors, and take a bus up the mountain from there. After coming back down, they can drive or ride a bus 15–20 minutes to Nyūtō Onsenkyō, a cluster of hot springs surrounded by autumn-colored woods.

Tazawa Lake & Tatsuko Statue

Lake Tazawa is a caldera lake in the city of Semboku, Akita Prefecture, northern Japan. It is the deepest lake in Japan at 423 metres. The area is a popular vacation area and several hot spring resorts can be found in the hills above the lake. Lake Tazawa (Tazawako) is a scenic caldera lake that has not been overly developed and retains a natural and rustic atmosphere. The lake is often visited in conjunction with nearby sites like Nyuto Onsen or Mount Akita - Komagatake, which also offer rustic scenes that are typical of the Tohoku region. At the northern end of the lake stands the Goza no Ishi Shrine on a site where the local lords used to come to admire the water in the feudal past . At the western end of the lake there is a famous golden statue of a woman named Tatsuko that has become a local symbol. According to legend, Tatsuko was a beautiful girl who prayed to retain her beauty forever but was instead cursed and turned into a dragon and eventually sunk to the bottom of Lake Tazawa.

Baru kali ini ngerasain trekking naik gunung beneran di Jepang. Saya pernah naik Gunung Toyama di jalur Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, tapi ya naik bis sampe 3000-an mdpl.

Nah, baru sekarang ini saya naik Gunung Akita Komagatake, sehari sebelum angin topan datang! Makanya angin di atas Gunung Akita Komagatake ini lumayan kenceng. Tapi ya tetap seru banget naik gunung ini. Kalau kamu liburan ke Jepang dan mampir ke Semboku City, wajib lah main kesini!
