LOCATION: Sagarmatha National Park is located to the Northeast of Kathmandu in the Khumbu region of Nepal. The park includes the highest peak in the world, Mt.Sagarmatha (Everest), and several other well-known peaks such as Lhotse, Nuptse, Cho Oyo, Pumori, Ama Dablam, Thermasarkhu, Kwangde, Khangtiaga and Gyachung Kang. The park was added to the list of World Heritage Sites in 1979.
FEATURES: The Mountains of Sagarmatha National Park are geologically young and broken up by deep gorges and glacial valleys. Vegetation includes pine and hemlock forests at lower altitudes, fir, juniper, birch and rhododendron woods, scrub and alpine plant communities, and bare rock and snow.
The famed bloom of rhododendrons occurs during spring (April and May) although other flora is mostly colorful during the monsoon season (June to August)
Wild animals most likely to be seen in the park are the Himalayan thar, ghoral, serow and musk deer. The snow leopard and Himalayan black bear are present but rarely sighted, other mammals rarely seen are the weasel, marten, Himalayan mouse hare (pika), and jackal and languor monkey.
The park is populated by approximately 3,000 of the famed Sherpa people whose lives are interwoven with the teaching of Buddhism. The main settlements are Namche Bazaar, Khumjung, Khunde, Thame, Thyangboche, Pangboche and Phortse.
The economy of the Khumbu Sherpa community has traditionally been heavily based on trade and livestock herding.
But with the coming of international mountaineering expeditions since 1950 and the influx of foreign trekkers, the Sherpa economy today is becoming increasingly dependent on tourism.
Panorama From Sagarmatha National Park HQ
On our rest day in Namche Bazaar, we took an acclimatisation hike up to the Sagarmatha National Park H.Q. From here we got this great view up the Khumbu valley of the mountains ahead - the huge bulk of Thamserku, the unmistakable profile of Ama Dablam, and Everest just peeking over the Lhotse-Nuptse wall in the distance.
EVEREST REGION TREKKING
Everest region is one of the most famous and beautiful trekking destinations in Nepal. Locally, known as Khumbu region, it is located in the northeastern partof the country and is protected by the Sagarmatha National Park and Makalu Barun National Park. The Everest region is far-famed for being home to the world’s highest mountain-the Mt. Everest (8848m) along with many other snowcapped giants like Makalu (8485m), Cho Oyu (8201m), Ama Dablam (6856m), Lhotse (8516m), Island Peak (6189m), and Nuptse (7861m). Other than this, the Khumbu region is also blessed with beautiful glaciers, ancient Buddhist monasteries, and vibrant Sherpa settlements.
The most common and popular method to reach the region is via a flight to Lukla. Likewise, a switchback from Jiri will take you through the lower hills of Solukhumbu and heads north to reach Lukla. From here, a variety of trip packages like treks, peak climbing, and expeditions head towards their respective destinations. This allows travel enthusiasts to witness the true beauty of the Khumbu region. The journey leads you to various rugged hills and deep settlement of local Sherpa people and allows you to know more about their culture and lifestyle. Also, Sagarmatha National Park (a UNESCO world heritage site) and Makalu Barun National Park are home to many endangered and rare species of wildlife like Snow Leopard, Musk Deer, Ghoral, Red-billed Chough and Himalayan Blue Sheep. Also, the Everest region is known to host many Buddhist monasteries and Gumbas likes Tengboche, Thame, and Pangboche which add up to its beauty. Likewise, the Sherpa culture and lifestyle reflected in villages like Tengboche, Namche, Gokyo, Dingboche, and Phortse are also celebrated by the travelers. The Gokyo Lakes, the three passes of Renjo La (5360m), Cho La (5420m), and Kongma La (5535m), Khumbu Glacier, Ngozumpa Glacier, and Amphu Labsta Pass (5845m) are some other highlights in the region.
Recently, sky diving has also been introduced in the Everest region. The experience is quite unique as it gives an a360-degree view of the beautiful mountainous region. Three Passes Trek, Gokyo Lake Trek, Everest Base Camp Trek, and Everest View Trek are some of the major treks in this region. Likewise, Lobuche Peak (6119m), Island Peak (6189m), and Kyajo Ri (6186m) are popular peak climbing destinations. In terms of expeditions, the Mt. Everest (8848m), Cho Oyu (8201m), Nuptse (7861m), and Ama Dablam (6856m) are the famous options for mountaineers.
Although the Khumbu region is quite popular around the world, it is still remote to some extent and this makes your journey adventurous and challenging. One can travel to the Everest region throughout the year; yet, spring and autumn seasons are the ideal times. During these seasons, the skies are much clearer giving the best view over the mountains. One major issue tourists face when travelling to the Everest region are the flight delays and cancellations. Since the Lukla Airport is the only airport that connects this region, adverse weather conditions like snowfall and rainfall during monsoon and winter seasons delay or cancel the flights. So, travellers need to plan a couple of buffer days to remain on their itinerary.
