Mt Apatite Auburn, Maine
MOUNT APATITE PARK
Mount Apatite Park is located at 64 Mt. Apatite Road in Auburn. It's a 325-acre wooded park located in the western portion of the city. The park offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities not often found in municipal park settings. Rock hounds have known about this area for over 150 years, when the first discoveries of gem-quality tourmaline were found there. Since then, the area has experienced a great deal of mineral exploration, both commercial and amateur. Today amateurs may still search the mine tailings for apatite, tourmaline, and quartz specimens (special rules apply).
The park features approximately four miles of trails for non-motorized uses such as hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing.
Mountain bike trails are maintained by Central Maine NEMBA.
Mount Apatite
Mount Apatite, named after the mineral found there, is a unique spot in Auburn, Maine. It is open to non motorized recreation including mining for minerals like tourmaline.
We took the blue trail from the Small Road Trail head for a total of 3.7 miles. Go check it out!

BREWS and BIKES | Lewiston, Maine
DAY TWO in Maine I woke up in the Hilton Garden Inn in Lewiston/Auburn a mill town 35 minutes north of Portland. There I headed to Mt Apatite to go mountain biking with Disa and Chris from the Central Maine Chapter of the New England Mountain Bike Association gave me a tour. It was pretty intense but I loved it!

I then headed back to Lewiston to visit Baxter Brewery, the third largest brewery in the state. Bill the CEO gave me a tour of the brewery where I had a flight of their delicious beers. My favorite was the Window Seat which a coconut stout! From there I walked over to Fish Bones American Grill to have a quick fish sandwich.
Next up I drove down to Portland the capital where I met with Norman from Summer Feet Cycling. We went cycled around the city and made a stop at two breweries, High Tide Brewery and Urban Farm Fermentory. High Tide was amazing and what I loved about Urban Farm Fermentory was the mead, honey wine.
To finish off the night I headed to one of the best restaurants in the city Five Fifty-Five. I went with their tasting menu, mussels, scallops and the best dish was the lobster mac and cheese!
I hope you loved this video! Have you been to Maine? Please let me know your favorite spots.

Mineral Minute Episode 3 - Tourmaline
Today's mineral: Tourmaline
Tourmaline is a huge family of boron silicates that share crystal structure, but vary in chemical composition.
It has a hardness of 7- 7.5 , cleavage is indistinct, a white streak, and a glassy luster.
Tourmaline is known to be virtually any color. This awesome gem can even be multi-colored, such as watermelon tourmaline, which was was first discovered in 1902 at Dunton Quarry in Oxford County, Maine. The pegmatites of Maine still provide a rich source of this most sought after variety.
Tourmaline can be found in the U.S., Afghanistan, Pakistan, Russia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Africa, and Brazil.
Here in the United States, tourmaline can be collected at the:
Himalaya Mine at Lake Henshaw, California
Oceanview Mine in San Diego County, California
Hogg Mine near LaGrange, Georgia
Harvard Quarry, Oxford County, Maine
Brushy Creek Mine near Asheville, North Carolina
Mt. MIca in Paris, Maine
And finally Mt. Apatite, near Auburn, Maine.
