阿蘇山とは熊本県阿蘇地方にある活火山で、広大なカルデラ地形を有することで有名です。その阿蘇山の火口の一つである中岳第一火口、活火山を横断する阿蘇山ロープウェー、阿蘇山観光の拠点である阿蘇山西駅を訪れてみました。
Mt. Aso is an active volcano group in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, and famous for its large caldera structure. I visited its crater, aerial tramway over the volcano, and tourist building.

Inside an Active Volcano - Mt. Aso, Japan
A trip to one of the must see places in Kyushu, Japan is Mt. Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture. Besides staggering and lush views of the surrounding area, you can see one of the larger calderas in the world, which was created when Mt. Aso exploded 1,000s of years ago causing the surrounding area to sink hundreds of meters to create a circular depression around the base of the volcano.
Visitors can hike all around the volcano and up to its edges to peer into its still active cauldron--beware because the top is sometimes closed due to noxious gases spewing out. The landscape and layers of soil, rock, and ash are dramatic and at times alien with areas that remind one of the surface of the moon.
The trip is worth a visit no matter where you are living in Japan and you will have bragging rights to say you have walked up an active volcano. If hiking isn't your thing, you can take the ropeway up or drive to a parking lot at the top. After you go, post your videos and impressions below.

Japanese volcano Mount Aso on island of Kyushu erupts
Mount Aso (阿蘇山 Aso-san?) is the largest active volcano in Japan, and is among the largest in the world. It stands in Aso Kujū National Park in Kumamoto Prefecture, on the island of Kyushu. Its peak is 1592 m above sea level. Mt. Aso has a fairly large caldera (25 km north-south and 18 km east-west) with a circumference of around 120 km (75 mi), although sources vary on the exact distance.

Just when I thought there is no other way to see the caldera in Mt. Aso since the cable car going up to the summit has been shut down since the Kumamoto earthquake last year, I discovered an unexpected means of transportation to make it happen.
The whole helicopter ride costs 5000 yen and lasted about 5 minutes, and can be taken at the Helipad just one bus stop before the Mt. Aso bus terminus.

The Daikanbo Lookout over the Mt. Aso region is one of Japan's greatest sights, looking over the world's biggest caldera.
The 936m high view of Daikanbo (大観峰) in Aso, Kumamoto gives you a commanding view of the area as well as the Nehanzo or Nirvana Buddha, since the mountain contours on the horizon look like a reclining Buddha asleep.
Unfortunately there is no train or public bus access, so renting a car is the most convenient way to reach Daikanbo. Parking is free and you will also find a restaurant and gift shop at the peak. Of course, make sure the weather is clear before going there.
