BACKGROUND:

The cool weather in Mt. Batulao is a pleasant escape from the city. The moment you arrive at the Evercrest Golf Course – the jumpoff – you will feel the same coolness felt by the visitors of Tagaytay. And this temperature will be with you all the way, especially during the months of January and February, where it is usually dry and cool.
There are days, on the other hand, when Mt. Batulao can feel like a desert – very hot and humid – owing to the exposed nature of its trails, which also makes it prone to muddiness during the wet season (June to October). On the other hand, Mt. Batulao is usually visited by winds that make any climb – hot or cool – refreshing. This combination of elements make Mt. Batulao a very interesting destination.
But that’s not all. The landscapes of Batulao are quite remarkable; and although the view remains basically the same throughout the trek, the rolling slopes, through which trail pass by, and the new variety afforded by two major trails – the “Old Trail” and the “New Trail”, makes Batulao one of the most popular dayhikes or near-Manila hikes. It is favored not only for the pleasantness of the hike, but also because it makes for a very good training climb.

JANUARY 28, 2017—It was Marie's first, and Bong's second, Day Hike in Mt. Batulao. Mt. Batulao is an 811+ MASL mountain in Nasugbu, Batangas with open trails, rolling hills, and scenic views of surrounding towns in Batangas as well as of Balayan Bay. Its main draw is its proximity from Metro Manila, making it a favorite day hike destination by recreational and serious mountaineers alike.

For this day hike, Marie went with her Finance Team in PEPSICO: Meann, Iskra, and Lulu. Only Jeff was not able to make it.

This Day Hike came into fruition thanks mostly to planning and organizational skills of Bernard Enriquez and Ken Agsaway (of wildspaces.ph) who also guided to a safe and fun climb.

Mount Batulao is one of the mountains with easy trails, most recommended for beginners., but there are some steep slopes and cliffs along the trail, so you have to be careful especially when raining.

There are two different trails.

Day Hike: Mt. Batulao | Nasugbu, Batangas, Philippines | We.Are.Wanderful

This is a Throwback Slideshow Video. The date was March 1, 2008. The location, Mt. Batulao (811 masl) between Nasugbu and Balayan towns in Batangas.

Bong joined the Delbros AB Normal Club headed by Ed Delgado for a day hike of the popular mountaineering destination in Batangas. Later that day they spent the night camping in Caleruega.


According to local lore, the mountain got its name from Batong Umiilaw (glowing stone or rock) which later morphed into Batulaw, and later still, into Batulao. That was probably how the mountain must have appeared at night when viewed from a distance back then, probably before the age of bright electric-powered lights.

Mt. Batulao is a popular mountaineering destination because of its close proximity from Metro Manila. It is also a relatively easy mountain to climb, conducive even for first time or neophyte climbers.

But it is also a very beautiful mountain with its own unique characteristics. The long trail to the summit follows the mountain's ridge-line, which somehow looks like the jagged back of a huge dinosaur. The trail is mostly through the top of the ridge which is generally a grassland. There is hardly any shelter from the scorching heat of the sun so it is a particularly hot climb especially during the summer season, which is also when the mountain is busiest. But then this also provide hikers an unhindered view of the surrounding landscape. At the summit hikers are treated to a 360° panoramic view of the Batangas plains, Taal Lake, and Balayan Bay.

After two days nesting in Manila's shopping malls, we felt well rested and the rain passed. So we decided to venture outside of Manila to Mt. Batulao in Batangas! We highly recommend this hike for nature lovers looking to escape the city for the day!

We took a 7:10 am bus bound for Nasugbu from the DLTB Co. hub at the Buendia Bus Terminal on Taft Ave. The buses seem to leave frequently, at least every 30 minutes or so. Be sure to tell the driver you are going to Mt. Batulao and would like to bet off at Evercrest Golf Club (now known as Hillcrest). Bus fare was just 111 pesos per person.

We arrived at Evercrest (Hillcrest) around 9:15 and headed toward the jump-off point (or starting point) on foot. We eventually flagged a tricycle and got a ride for the majority of the 2km distance; we paid 150 pesos total.

We began the hike around 10:00 am and finished at 3:00 pm. We started by hiking the new course then went full circle by taking the old course back. Both courses were challenging, but the old course was steeper and had two sections that required the use of a rope to maneuver up or down a small cliff.

We had to pay 20 pesos per person the park fee. We actually ended up paying this amount twice, once on the new course and then again on the old course. Be sure to have exact change!

We came across two vendors on the new trail selling soda, Gatorade and water as well as halo-halo (Filipino shaved ice!). There were a couple more vendors who had fresh coconuts for sale. This was a life saver because we didn't bring enough water with us. It's easy to get dehydrated on this hike because the vast majority of the trails are uncovered, which exposes hikers to a lot of sunshine. Be sure to pack ample water, snacks and sunscreen!

When you're ready to go back to Manila, all you have to do is wait alongside the main road near Evercrest (Hillcrest) and flag down a DLTB Co. bus. It was standing room only when we boarded the bus, but a lot of people disembarked in Tagyatay.

By the way, if you want to do an overnight trip in this area, we recommend staying in Tagyatay and adding a trek to Taal Volcano to your itinerary. ;)
