Climbing Mt. Bierstadt - Georgetown, Colorado
Even though Mt. Bierstadt is one of the easier 14ers in Colorado to climb, it is still a challenge for those of us who live at lower elevations. This 14,060 foot mountain is totally worth it though. The views from the top are breathtaking, and the sense of accomplishment you get from conquering a 14er is awesome.
In this video I take you along with us as we hike up this mountain. If you are ever in the vicinity of Georgetown, Colorado, it is well worth the time to hike this amazing mountain.
It took several hours to get up and down the thing as we took it pretty slow to conserve energy. Each person took two liters of water with them, but after having done it, I would recommend no less than three just in case.
For this trip we took a group of 10 up. Only 4 made it to the very top and three others got real close before having to turn back.
Before you decide to tackle something like this, please make sure you are prepared for several things:
1) Oxygen levels - if you are not from higher elevations, you can potentially get altitude sickness from trying something like this. Water can help, but one of the best things to do is to acclimate yourself for a few days to the higher elevations before exerting yourself. For a great article on altitude sickness go here:
2) Water/food: It took several hours to climb up and down this mountain. I would suggest no less than three liters of water if you are not used to the higher elevations. Also, some high calorie/carb/protein foods that are light are nice to have to replenish your energy.
3) Shoes: Make sure you have good broken-in shoes to tackle this sort of thing. Blisters will be waiting for you at the bottom if you don't.
4) Time: Start early enough so you can begin your descent around noon. We started out at 8am and that was good for that particular day. If you see any thunderstorms forming, or hear any thunder WHATSOEVER, head down the mountain IMMEDIATELY. That day one person died and 12 were injured because of lightning in this region. Check weather websites before going, but don't trust them 100%.

Colorado: Part 3 - Summit FAIL! Mt. Bierstadt (4K)
In the third installment of our Colorado adventure, we attempt to summit the 14'er Mt. Bierstadt. Supposedly one of the easier 14,000-foot peaks in Colorado, it still presented quite the challenge. In all actuality, it's not a difficult climb, but the elevation got to a few of us and we had to succumb and turn back.
Join me on this epic hike (and fail) as I attempt my first 14'er in Colorado.

Mt. Bierstadt - Colorado 14er Dayhike
Mount Bierstadt (14,065 ft) is a mountain in the Front Range region of the Rocky Mountains. It is one of 54 fourteeners in Colorado. It was named for Albert Bierstadt, a popular painter of Colorado's Rockies of the 19th century. Along with Mount Evans, Bierstadt is the closest 14'er to Denver. It’s not much more than an hour outside of Denver and the West Slopes, only requires a 3 mile, 2,391 foot ascent up a class 1 trail to reach its summit. Because of its easiness and accessibility Mount Bierstadt is popular with novice peakbaggers. If you climb it during the summer months expect to share the summit with lots of other hikers.
Amongst more experienced hikers, Mount Bierstadt is a popular place for conditioning climbs and winter ascents. The year around access from Guanella Pass definately adds to the popularity of this peak in winter.
For those interested in adding some challenge, there are longer, more difficult routes available. One of these is the class 3 Sawtooth ridge which connects Mount Bierstadt with Mount Evans. A long day can made by climbing Mount Bierstadt, Mount Evans, and Mount Spalding.
Hike Mt Bierstadt, Colorado
Mt. Bierstadt is often referred to as an easy 14er. However, I'd argue that there's no such thing. All mountain excursions require planning, and adequate gear. This video shows you the trail so you know what to expect!
Mt Bierstadt Hike
Our MT. Bierstadt hike with Florida blogger Justin Fricke couldn't have been better. It started when Justin decided that since he was going to be in Colorado for a business conference anyway... why not make the most of the trip and add a 14,000 foot peak to the agenda. That’s how we wound up hitting the trails to Mount Bierstadt together recently, taking in all the stunning scenery along the way.

The Bierstadt - Evans loop via the Sawtooth Ridge. Partially a night hike with a start time of 2:30 AM. We knew it would be cold and windy up high, but not THIS cold and windy. The summit of Beirstadt was an unpleasant experience to say the least. However, the view of the night sky on the way up was unparalleled!
