Furano (富良野) is a beautiful town in the center of Hokkaido, famous of its floral landscapes. July is a popular time to visit Furano, as the Furano famous lavender fields are in full bloom. In the winter, Furano transforms into a downhill and cross country skiing resort.
Lavender has been grown and cultivated in Hokkaido for more than half a century. However, the demand for Hokkaido’s lavender has decreased due to lower priced, imported lavender. Currently, lavender in Hokkaido is more a tourist attraction than an agricultural crop.
Furano's picturesque lavender fields bring large number of tourists to this area every summer. The majority of lavender begins to bloom in late June and peaks from mid July to early August. Though less in quantity, other varieties of lavender remain in bloom until mid August.
In addition to lavender, there are many other flowers cultivated in Furano. Visitors interested in flowers should plan to visit between June and September, though there is fluctuation between the flowers making view beautiful before and after this time period. In general, the following flowers are seen in the following time periods:
From June…rape blossoms, poppies and lupins
From July…lilies
From August and September…sunflowers, salvias and cosmos
Though there are numerous flowers fields across Furano, Farm Tomita is a popular spot. With the Tokachi Mountains in the background, the lavender and flower fields make a beautiful picture.
