Hirosaki and Mt. Iwaki in early summer 2018
[ Maniac Japan Travel -Tohoku ]
During the Edo Period, Hirosaki (弘前) was the political and cultural capital of the Tsugaru Region, the western section of present day Aomori Prefecture. The city remains one of the culturally richest cities in the northern Tohoku Region.
Hirosaki developed around its castle, Hirosaki Castle. Several thousand cherry trees are planted around the castle grounds, which become one of Japan's most spectacular cherry blossom spots typically from late April to early May.
Mount Iwaki is a compound volcano located in the southwest portion of the Tsugaru Plain. The mountain has a conical shape with three peaks. Standing 1,625 meters high, it is the highest mountain in the prefecture.
In 1975, it was designated as the 50th national park. Sometime in June or July, a variety of primrose (known as Michinoku or Iwaki) that only grows on Mt. Iwaki comes to full bloom at around the 9th station.
The summit offers a panoramic view stretching as far as Matsumaezaki in Hokkaido. It overlooks the Hakkoda mountains, Gongenzaki and Jusanko of Tsugaru Peninsula, the gentle arc of Shichirinagahama, Ajigasawa and Oodose.

Sakura Cherry Blossoms in Hirosaki - Japan ᴴᴰ ● 桜まつり青森弘前⎮Japan Travel Vlog
►Hirosaki Castle Park is home to almost 3000 sakura trees, with over 50 different types - and in my opinion, it's THE best spot of anywhere in Japan to watch the cherry blossoms.
There are lots of great places around Tokyo to watch the sakura cheery blossom, but Hirosaki in Aomori isn't just great, it's an overwhelming experience, with sakura everywhere you look, in this beautiful castle park, with Mount Iwaki (Iwakiyama) serving as a perfect backdrop.
Aomori is located north of Tokyo, 3h10m by Shinkansen, right under the island of Hokkaido. Once you get to Aomori City, it's another 50 minutes by local train to Hirosaki, but well worth the effort, and I'd say it's something you should see just once in your life.
- Enjoy!

Iwakiyama Jinja 2018
[ Maniac Japan Travel -Tohoku ]
Iwakiyama Shrine (岩木山神社 Iwakiyama jinja) is a Shintō shrine in the city of Hirosaki in Aomori Prefecture, Japan. It is the ichinomiya of former Tsugaru Domain. All of Mount Iwaki is considered to be a portion of the shrine.
The primary kami of Iwakiyama Shrine is the Ōkuninushi (大国主), referred to here as Utsushikuniotama-no-kami (顕国魂神). Other kami include Tatsubihime-no-kami (多都比姫神), Ōhoyamatsum (大山祇神), Sakanoue no Karitamaro-no-mikoto (坂上刈田麿), Ukanome-no-mikoto (宇賀能賣神), and Ōyamakuhi-no-kami (大山咋神).
The foundation of the Iwakiyama Shrine predates the historical period, and Mount Iwaki was a holy mountain for the local Emishi tribes. Per shrine tradition, the shrine was established on the summit of Mount Iwaki in the year 780. It was rebuilt by the folk-hero Sakanoue no Tamuramaro in the year 800 and dedicated to his father Sakanoue no Karitamaro. Several subsidiary shrines were built around the base of the mountain in an area called the Tokoshinai (十腰内) by the local inhabitants. One of these subsidiary shrines to the southeast of the mountain developed into the Shingon sect Buddhist temple of Hyakutaku-ji (百沢寺) in 1091, and became the predecessor of the present shrine. The three main peaks on Mount Iwaki were identified with the Buddhist deities of Amida Nyorai, Yakushi Nyorai and Kannon Bosatsu.
During the Meiji period’s government-ordered separation of Buddhism from Shinto, the temple became a Shinto shrine. In 1871, it was officially designated one of the Kokuhei Shōsha (国幣小社), or 3rd ranked national shrine under the State Shinto system until 1946.[2]
Many of the structures of Iwakiyama Shrine date from the early Edo period, and were built in 1694 under the sponsorship of the Tsugaru clan of Hirosaki Domain. The two-story main gate (Ryōmon) was built in 1628. The Honden, Heiden, Oku-no-mon and Ryōmon are built in the yosegi-zukuri style with decorative wood carvings, which have given the shrine its nickname of “Oku-Nikko” after the more famous structures of the Nikkō Tōshō-gū. All of these buildings are registered as National Important Cultural Properties.

Mount Iwaki is a roughly symmetrical andesitic stratovolcano, rising in relative isolation from the plains at the base of Tsugaru Peninsula. Its summit crater is two kilometers wide, and it has three lava domes on the western and southern flanks. The mountain has frequently been active in historic times, with very frequent activity consisting mostly of small to moderate phreatic explosions during the Edo period. The last known eruption was on March 23, 1863. Hirosaki University has maintained an observatory with a total of 18 telemetering stations on the mountain since 1981.
