Hayato Takizawa
Executive Director of NPO Tohokuru
Hayato Takizawa is a Tohoku Electric Power employee, and was in his office in Fukushima when the earthquake struck. He joined the power recovery crew immediately, and two months later joined a volunteer disaster relief group in Minami Soma. In July 2011 he took a two-year leave of absence from work to continue volunteering in the recovery efforts. To help bring people back to the affected areas, Hayato created a guidebook, Walking through Post-Earthquake Tohoku. He also started up the Tohoku Earthquake Recovery Tourism Association, which eventually became NPO Tohokuru. He says, For visitors to the affected areas in Tohoku, it is extremely helpful to have a guidebook showing the restored shopping areas, local lodging information, and images from before the earthquake. Tohokuru published a version of this guidebook for Miyagi Prefecture in 2013, and will publish the Iwate and Fukushima versions in 2014.
Chagu Chagu Umakko チャグチャグ馬コ Horse Festival Takizawa Village, Morioka, Iwate by Kari Gröhn karigrohnc
Chagu-Chagu Umakko チャグチャグ馬コ Horse Festival Takizawa Village, Morioka, Iwate by Kari Gröhn karigrohncom
Chagu-Chagu Umakko チャグチャグ馬コ celebrates the end of the rice planting season and shows appreciation toward the hard working horses. The horses decorated with coloured harnesses and lots of bells parade fifteen kilometres from Takizawa Village to Morioka.
“Chagu Chagu” is an onomatopoeic expression of the sound of the bells and “Umakko” is a local diminutive for “horse.”
A legend tells a story of horse: Long time ago, a greedy mister in Morioka bought a blue-black shiny haired horse, which was rather calm and tough enough for hard working. The horse was named Ao (Blue) by the peasants who loved it very much. But Ao got thin and lost its lustre on its hair because the master did not give it enough food and made it work hard from morning till night.
One day as soon as a peasant started ploughing, Ao suddenly tear off its rein and ran away. The peasant followed the horse and found a small white bearded old man riding on its back. Now all the peasants ran after the horse. At last when the peasants reached a mountain pass, they couldn't find the old man anywhere but only Ao lying on the ground at the point of death. Then they realized that the old man is a god of horses who felt pity for Ao. The peasants
built a shrine on Ao´s grave. Every year since then, they free their horses from work and pay a devotional visit to the shrine with the horses decorated with pretty flowers and rings on their back.
