Makihatayama (Mt. Makihata)
Makihatayama (Mt. Makihata-1967m) is one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Japan, and extends over Niigata and Gunma prefectures. It is renowned for its great view from the peak, abundance of mysterious ponds and alpine plants. There are numerous waterfalls and strangely shaped rocks to enjoy, and the maze-like ravines hold snow until summer for an out of season cool snowy valley walks.
Ura-Makihata Keikoku (Ura-Makihata Gorge)
The picturesque Ura-Makihata Gorge is 6km long with vertical walls of rock towering up 100m like folding screens. The gorge runs up stream of Ikazawa River, and there are huge rocks in places changing the flow of the river, creating rapids and waterfalls.
Uonuma Skyline
Uonuma Skyline is a scenic mountain drive which extents over 15km between Hakkatoge (Hakka pass) and Junitoge (Juni pass). On a clear day, a panoramic view of Echigo San Zan (Three Mountains of Echigo), Makihata mountain range and moutains on the Joetsu boarders can be enjoyed from the Uonuma Observatory. The night view of the city lights and sky full of stars are also very attractive.

Yamabushi waterfall ablution was held in Kasyo Falls covered with snow and icecles at the foot of Makihata Mountain by priests of Mangakuin Yamabushi Temple on February 18 2006, as part of Shiozawa Seppu Festival of Minami-Uonuma City. Yamabushi is a Buddhist priest practicing asceticism in the mountains.
