Malasimbo Music & Arts Festival (Puerto Galera, Philippines)
blog:MALASIMBOOO! Transformative Music, Art & Magic @MalasimboFest
The first weekend of the Malasimbo Music & Arts Festival took place last March 4 to 6 on Mount Malasimbo, Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro.
A diverse selection of musicians from various corners of the world showcased their talents at the famous grass-terraced amphitheater, while visual artists used the rest of the mountain as their canvas.
The first weekend is a collective of some of the best new (and returning) local and international musicians. The music here ranges from world, rock, ambient, electronic, funk, soul, and jazz.
Note: remember to take some anti-vertigo medication if you get seasick.
When you get to Puerto Galera, take only Malasimbo-accredited jeeps.
You know it’s safe to ride if the jeep has a special pass on the windshield
…or if they have a Malasimbo banner on the sides.
Tricycles and other privately-hired/owned vehicles are prohibited on the access road to Malasimbo.
Going to the entrance requires a short hike, so wear some sturdy footwear unless you want your sandals broken before the party.
After registering and surrendering your tickets, make sure to pick up your nifty RFID band.
Warning: these RFID bands go on seamlessly, but you can’t take them off as easily since the fabric is held together with inverted hooks.
Our tip is that you don’t fasten your band too tight, especially if you plan on staying for the whole weekend.
The Malasimbo experience aims to be as cashless as possible—you can top up your RFID bands with money before entering the festival grounds.
Our recommendation is P1,500 if you plan on eating and drinking a lot, otherwise P500 should suffice if you budget.
The natural terrain of the mountain is mostly smooth, but requires a medium-difficulty hike here and there.
Wear loose, breathable clothing and bring a jacket or pashmina since the weather at can vary from humid to chilly at night.
Camping at the festival is also an option—check here for packages.
Note: bring mosquito repellant.
Scattered around the festival grounds are more than 30 art installations of artists including Olivia D’Aboville, Agnes Arellano, Dondi Katigbak, Leroy New, and many more.
You may check the official Malasimbo Website for the full list of visual artists.
It’s best to arrive early (around 3:40-5PM) so you have enough light to appreciate the installations (unfortunately, no names or titles were provided during the time we visited).
You should consider revisiting some installations by nightfall as well.
All of the art installations use the mountain’s natural landscapes as the canvas, emphasizing the harmonious relationship with man and nature.
Other activities and workshops can be enjoyed at the festival grounds like capoeira, meditative yoga, and juggling.
One of the advocacies of the festival revolves around the cultural conservation of the 7 Mangyan tribes of Oriental Mindoro.
You can support this cause by purchasing their woven crafts and immersing yourself in the Mangyan Village area.
The Tamaraw is a critically endangered Dwarf Water Buffalo species endemic to Oriental Mindoro—through the D’Aboville Foundation’s eco-tourism initiatives like Malasimbo, we can help raise awareness and promote the conservation of their habitats.
Food and drinks are available at the festival grounds, but can be a little pricey considering the serving size.
A single can of craft beer costs P150 and a small bottled water costs P50—budget wisely.
Note: bringing in your own food and water is strictly prohibited and will be confiscated at the entrance.
The bestseller at the Malasimbo Delights stall is the Dabo-Dobo (P170).
Served in a dried coconut bowl and banana leaf, this savory chicken adobo has mushroom and fried garlic—a great quick fix for the hungry festivalgoer.
Tables are also provided for your eating or drinking convenience.
If you find yourself running out of money, there are ATMs around the festival grounds.
Restrooms for men and women are also available, but there can be around 20-30 people standing in line at peak hours (8pm-10pm).
One of Malasimbo Festival’s selling points is the grass-terraced amphitheater, whose natural acoustics are enhanced with this year’s new sound system.
Note: you should bring a picnic blanket or outdoor cushion for extra comfort.
The amphitheater starts filling up by 6:30-7:00pm on the 1st and 2nd day of the weekend. We suggest you come early if you want a better view.
Overall, The Malasimbo Music & Arts Festival weekend was a great success. We loved the variety of music, culture, and arts in every aspect. Team OAP can’t wait for another year of Malasimbo!
Malasimbo Lights & Dance Festival (Puerto Galera, Philippines)
blog: Malasimbo Music & Arts Festival: What to expect @MalasimboFest
The Malasimbo Music and Arts Festival is an international act set within the mystical foothills of Mt. Malasimbo in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro, Philippines.
For their 6th anniversary, the festival stretches the activities across two weekends: The Malasimbo Music & Arts Festival on March 4-6 and The Malasimbo Lights & Dance Festival on March 24-26.
The Picturesque Location
Puerto Galera’s breathtaking view should be reason enough to go to Malasimbo. Over the years, the festival’s attendance has swelled well over 6,000 people from more than 30 different countries.
The Unique Festival Grounds
The festival grounds are home to the famous grass-terraced amphitheater, whose acoustics are made nonpareil by the mountain’s unique landscapes.
The Malasimboat Party
Grab yourself some hotdogs and burgers and chill out to 4 hours of great music as you party into the sunset.
You can even try out the waterslide if you want to take a dip in style.
The Vivid Visual Arts

Over the years, more than 50 visual artists have showcased their works at the stunning festival grounds. For their 6th anniversary, Malasimbo will feature close to 30 unique installations by the country’s top visual artists. You can expect the works of Leeroy New, Agnes Arellano, Olivia D’Aboville-Grgic, and more as part of the roster.
Here are a few pieces you can feast your eyes on:
Wawi Navarroza and Ling Ramilo Installation
(Sa Langit Mong Bughaw/To Your Skies of Blue by Wawi Navarroza and Ling Ramilo Installation)
This installation is a mosaic tapestry that floats along the breeze. As an update to the previous installation, which was orange, the artists intend on making it blue this year.
Installation Diagram Iya Regalario _ Gringo Benedicto
(Utopian Visions by Iya Regalario and Gringo Benedicto)
This installation is artist’s rendition of a “heavenly realm”, made with a tree stump, resin, paints, gelatins, and glow in the dark liquids to “transport the audience to their own dreamy intergalactic travels.”
The Eclectic Music (March 4-6)
Malasimbo Music and Arts Audience
The first weekend will feature many talented musical virtuosos and up-and-coming artists from both the local and international scenes. If you’re into world music, banging beats, and jazz-fusion, we highly recommend you attend this weekend
Here are just a few of the talented artists to look forward to this March:
Headlining the first weekend will be Jacob Collier, a musical prodigy based in the UK. Jacob’s one-man-band act using contemporary technology has grabbed the attention of prominent American producer, Quincy Jones. Make sure to check out his YouTube channel here.
Renowned South Korean group, GongMyoung, returns after 5 years to electrify festivalgoers with their musical ensembles featuring Korean-Western percussion and woodwind instruments.
Look out for Tom Thum of Australia and the Manila Symphony Orchestra as they perform an unusual, but transfixing combination of beatboxing and classical music. You can check out a preview of their performance here.
The Brat Pack is one of the first bands from Asia to become a finalist at the Blues Competition in Memphis, Tennessee.
The Reo Brothers are a Tacloban-based wondergroup pegging the ever-famous Beatles. They’ll be sure to rock your socks off!
Classical contemporary musicians, Triple Fret, won first prize at the 27th Guitar Ensemble Festival in Shinagawa, Tokyo last year.
Electrifying Electronic Music (March 24-26)
Malasimbo Lights and Dance Festival
From March 24-26, the grassy amphitheater will be the place to be for funk, house, hip hop, drum ‘n’ bass and electronic music lovers.
This year, you can expect to see Lapalux, an English record producer who specializes in R&B and house music.
Onra, a French DJ who creates house and techno music.
San Soda, a Belgian DJ who mixes techno.
…and you can party the night away with the expert Hip Hop DJ and Turntablist, Kentaro.
The Advocacies
Other than music and arts, Malasimbo also centers on promoting the indigenous Mangyan tribe and their culture, preserving the tamaraw and planting trees and mangroves.
At the festival, the Mangyan will be selling beautiful handicrafts. Funds gathered will help in the conservation of the Ambahan and Surat Mangyan, while providing educational incentives for the youth.
The proceeds will also help supply solar power to the Iraya Mangyan village of Baclayan, so don’t forget to buy your souvenirs!
(Note: You can also go on an Eco-Safari with the help of the D’Aboville Foundation and Noe Conservation to help protect the Tamaraw, a water buffalo found only in Puerto Galera.)
Malasimbo Audience
Don’t miss out on these two fun-filled weekends of great music and beautiful art for a cause!
Malasimbo Music & Arts Festival (Puerto Galera, Philippines)
MALASIMBO MUSIC FESTIVAL: A Magical Weekend at Mt. Malasimbo! @MalasimboFest
Malasimbo Music and Arts Festival, an international event set within the tropical gardens of Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro, Philippines. Situated at the foot of Mt. Malasimbo where the grass-terraced amphitheater overlooks one of the most beautiful bays in the world. This year's festivities include The Malasimbo Music & Arts Festival on March 6-8 and The Malasimbo Lights & Dance Festival on March 13-15.
People from over 30 countries come to learn and experience first-hand indigenous cultures through arts and music.
The hike to the grass-terraced amphitheater was a bit of a challenge…
For those who have a 3-Day pass, you can camp on the mountain for free.
Don't forget to visit the demo Mangyan village near the Dabu Stage.
There are 7 Mangyan Tribes in Mindoro. Each tribe features a permanent demo Mangyan life-size houses representing their rich culture and beautiful crafts.
For a quick snack, try the herbed kesong puti pandesal for Php 70. It's carabao cheese, olive oil and herbs. Though quite pricey for a pandesal sandwich.
You can also take it home for Php 200.
And for their best seller the dabo-dobo, which probably got it's name from the Dabo tribe of Mangyan, the local tribes of Mindoro. It's chicken adobo with mushroom and garlic chips for Php 150.
It's quite pricey for the small serving, but worth the try.
Be sure to arrive early and explore the open door museum. The grounds have been beautifully blessed with the works of talented contemporary artists mostly local artist but attracting foreign artists as well.
Ling Quisumbing Ramilo created the dreamy Everywhere There You Are, strips of orange floating in the wind.
Agnes Arellano created the avatar, one of four sculptures displayed in the event.
You can even witness performance art every 6 pm at the bonfire area.
The Malasimbo Music and Arts Festival would not be complete without it's awesome line-up of performers.
The most anticipated is Ky-Mani Marley, the son of Bob Marley.
The stalls in the festival don't accept cash; In exchange for your ticket each person will receives an RFID-enabled bracelet, which is also conveniently used to store cash points.
Overall we loved Malasimbo, we learned the festival wasn't only about the music & arts, but it was most importantly awareness of the Mangyan cultures and preservation of our environment. The experience of Malasimbo for the traveling artist is a must. The trip was fun with a lot of friendly faces and foreigners. For those on a budget it's best to eat first at White Beach as the food, drinks and transportation at the event area is x3 the price. The area is kid-friendly but I don't recommend because of the logistics.

Public Ferry (one way)- Php 250-280
Environmental Fee- Php 50
Municipality Fee: Php 10
Jeep to Malasimbo (roundtrip)- Php 200-300
Don't expect much on the Food by the beach as it's your typical Filipino fare dishes. We were recommended to try Foodtrip and Natividad along White Beach, that's value for your money with unlimited rice!
We stayed at a hotel that's a bit pricier than those in front of White Beach. But the plus side it's secluded, they have transport shuttles to the beach, friendly staffs, amenities and WiFi.
What to bring in Malasimbo:
1. Bring comfortable shoes or slippers.
2. Bring a picnic cloth
3. Jacket as it gets cold at night
4. Sunscreen
5. Cash
6. Great company
7. Camera
8. Waterproof bag
9. Your signature Malasimbo look
10. An open mind
We wished we had time to explore the beaches and waterfalls, we'll definitely be back to Puerto Galera for more adventures to come!
