NIKKO TOCHIGI - Climbing Mount Nantai
Golden Week is a collection of four national holidays within seven days and it is my favorite holiday. We usually hang out with our friends and explore places we've never been to. But unfortunately, the whole week wasn't good for outdoor activities and it feels so frustrating knowing that it was the only time we had together. So we forget the weather, packed our things and start the Golden Adventure. We supposed to have a BBQ party after the long journey to the top of Mt. Nantai but the rain started pouring and we missed our bus ride to the campsite.
Although the whole trip was a mess and ended up eating our BBQ at home we still had fun and we enjoyed the majestic scene of Nikko. It was my most intense climbing experience.
The places we have visited:
1. Mount Nantai - 2,486 M (we had no idea about the snow ????) Mt. Nantai is the Mt. Fuji of the Nikko area. Its easy access makes it one of the most popular hikes in the Kanto area, so be prepared for crowds during weekends and national holidays. The hike is intermediate level but steep (about 1,200m elevation gain).
2. Lake Chuzenji - a scenic lake in the mountains above the town of Nikko and is located at the foot of Mount Nantai. Chuzenjiko's shores are mostly undeveloped and forested except at the lake's eastern end where the small hot spring town of Chuzenjiko Onsen was built.
3. Kegon Falls - One of Japan’s three great waterfalls and out of 48 waterfalls around Nikko area Kegon falls is the most famous. It is also the only exit for the waters of Lake Chuzenji and has a rushing 97-meter waterfall.

45 degree slope on the trail.
I've climbed Mt. Tsukuba twice. This was my first go at Mt. Nantai. I only made it up halfway due to wet weather; I did not have proper hiking boots to do wet weather hiking. Half way up I was 50/50 for pressing on but I asked people returning from the top if it was raining and cloudy. The answer was yes, so I decided then to wait for a clear day to make the ascent.

Appreciating Nikko Japan's Chuzenji Lake and Nantai Mountain
One of the travel spots we have enjoyed during our short stay in Nikko, Japan. Looking at Nikko's Chuzenji lake and Nantai mountain is astonishing and a wonderful experience. We highly recommend for you to stop by this tourist spot if you ever get a chance to visit Nikko, Japan.
Volcanoes in Japan #6 - Mount Nantai
Final volcano - Mount Nantai, Lake Chuzenji and its massive waterfall Kegon Fall. You may recognise this volcano and lake from my Nikko video ( although I had no idea at the time that it was a volcano.
Please leave a comment if there's anything in particular you're interested in for future videos and I'll see what I can do.

The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko ー A journey to spiritual and adventure-filled Nikko
The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko set to open its door on May 22, 2020.
Located in the northern part of Japan’s Kanto region just two and a half hours north of Tokyo, Nikko is a popular destination renowned for such natural and cultural jewels as the 97-meter cascade of Kegon Falls and the splendid architecture of Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples set in a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko is located on the east shore of Lake Chuzenji, south of Mount Nantai, in an area known locally as Okunikko, or “deep Nikko.” The lakeside resort will provide guests with easy access to such prominent scenic attractions as the Kegon Falls and the UNESCO-designated Toshogu and Futarasan shrines and Rinnoji temple.

To get a better view of the lake and the ever-present Mount Nantai, I drove up to the sometimes-overlooked Mount Hangetsuyama near the lake. At the end of a road that leads up the mountain, there is a great lookout spot with wonderful views of the Nikko mountains. For the more adventurous, there is also a trailhead for a 20-30 minute hike at the lookout point which leads to a higher lookout deck with incredible views of Nantai and Lake Chuzenji.
The views today were even more dramatic with passing clouds. While the trees on the Okunikko side of Hangetsuyama which I could see from here were in full color, the trees around Chuzenji and on the stunning Hachodejima Peninsula seemed to be just about to peak.

Japan, Nikko, Kanman-ga-fuchi Abyss (憾満ヶ淵) slideshow
MUSIC: ザ・ベスト 箏 名演集
Kanman-ga-fuchi Abyss (憾満ヶ淵) was formed by an eruption of the nearby Mount Nantai. This gorge near central Nikko is only a few hundred meters long and can be enjoyed from a pleasant riverside walking trail.
Kanman-ga-fuchi is also known for its row of about 70 stone statues of Jizo, a Bodhisattva who cares for the deceased. This particular group of Jizo statues is alternately called Bake Jizo (Ghost Jizo), Narabi Jizo (Jizo in a line) or Hyaku Jizo (100 Jizo). The statues look out over the river and across to the Nikko Botanical Garden, but the botanical garden cannot be entered from the abyss.
Kanaman-ga-fuchi’s collection of Jizo statues is one of the most iconic locations in Nikko’s spiritual world. The statues have a significant importance for the locals as well as for the visitors making a pilgrimage to Nikko. It is believed that the figures of Jizo bring solace to people suffering from the loss of a child. It is said that Jizo helps to sneak children into the afterlife in the sleeves of his robe, assisting those babies that did not have the chance to build up good karma on earth prior to their passing. This is why you’ll see the statues often dressed in crocheted clothing made by those grieving the loss of a loved one. Parents hope that if they care for the figures of Jizo, he will do the same for their dead children. It is also said, that Jizo is the Bodhisattva who also cares for travellers and lost souls.
Jizo belong to Japan’s most beloved deities.
