Rescuers try to reach people stranded on Japan volcano
Rescue helicopters attempt to reach hundreds of people, including children, stranded on Mount Ontake after it erupted without warning sending ash pouring down the slope for more than two miles
Japanese military helicopters rescued seven people on Sunday morning who were stranded on a mountain by a volcanic eruption.
Many were injured and unable or unwilling to risk descending the 10,062-foot Mount Ontake on their own.
I am so glad that I came back alive, said one survivor.
On Sunday rescue workers found more than 30 people unconscious and believed to be dead near the peak of the volcano, a Japanese police official said.
The victims have been described as not breathing and their hearts have stopped, which is the customary way for Japanese authorities to describe a body until police doctors can examine it.
Mount Ontake in central Japan erupted in spectacular fashion shortly before noon on Saturday, catching mountain climbers by surprise and injuring at least 34, 12 seriously, according to Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency.
With a sound likened to thunder, the volcano erupted on a clear autumn day, spewing large white plumes of gas and ash high into the sky and blanketing the surrounding area in a light grey powder.
Smaller eruptions continued overnight.
Climbers managing to walk down on their own, arrived safely to the bottom of the mountain in Gero city meeting with friends and families.
Japan's meteorological agency raised the alert level for Mount Ontake to 3 on a scale of 1 to 5.
It warned people to stay away from the mountain, saying ash and other debris could fall up to 2.5 miles away.
Mount Ontake, about 130 miles west of Tokyo, sits on the border of Nagano and Gifu prefectures, on the main Japanese island of Honshu.
The volcano's last major eruption was in 1979

Mount Ontake iceclimbing training camp
Mount Ontake 3067m in the Gero-city is considered as one of the 3 sacred mountains in Japan. My friends, in the Hida Alpine Club, organized an iceclimbing training camp at one of its numerous frozen waterfalls.

Japan's Mount Ontake Erupts
Mount Ontake (御嶽山 Ontake-san?), also referred to as Mount Kiso Ontake (木曽御嶽山 Kiso Ontake-san?), is the second highest volcano in Japan at 3,067 m (10,062 ft)[3] located around 100 km (62 mi) northeast of Nagoya. It is on the borders of Kiso and Ōtaki, Nagano Prefecture, and Gero, Gifu Prefecture. It should not be confused with Mount Mitake, a mountain in Tokyo written with the same characters, and various other Japanese mountains which share the name Ontake.
Thought to be inactive until 1979, it underwent a series of eruptions over the following year. The latest reported eruption was on Saturday September 27, 2014 at around 11:53 AM at JST (UTC +9)[4]. [5]
The volcano has five crater lakes, with Ni no Ike (二ノ池?) at 2,905 m (9,531 ft) being the highest mountain lake in Japan.
On Saturday 27 September 2014 Mount Ontake erupted.[6]
River tracing Hyoe valley in Gero-city Japan
Another video from my friends, HAC Hida Alpine Club local mountainerring lovers on river tracing. Our Gero-city boasts of lots of greenery and clean waters, and active nature lovers like to trace rivers and gullies upstream rather than having to go through dense bushes. This area, the Hyoe-tani valley is located at the west of the Mount Ontake 3067m, and has numerous waterfalls. In July 2009, 12 members of the HAC enjoyed a hike visiting 2 stunning waterfalls and scrambling up lots of cascades.
Japan is a very wild country with 80% of the land mountainous. Climbing mountains sometimes is difficult due to thick bush as a result of lots of precipitaions. On the other hand, tracing rivers in upperstream areas has been favored by climbers and professional fishermen. This is a video report from HAC (Hida Alpine Club) at the Japan Alps area, exploring the Shin Valley in the Gero city.
Gorge walk at Sawara ravine (Mt Ontake)
Osaka town of the Gero-ctity is situated at the foot of Mr. Ontake and has countless waterfalls. In order to broaden our water activity product lineup we went for a short inspection for half day. This is Sawara ravine, access is relatively easy (20 min by car) and can be quite exciting after rain like today. I am dreaming of opening several routes for canyoning next year.

Gero city in Hida Japn gets quite chilly in winter, and many waterfalls become frozen, ideal for iceclimbing. In January 2010 my friends at local Hida Alpine Club was exploring one of them.

Canyoning test run at Hyoe valley, Gero-city
I was hosting a US alpinist couple in the middle of the hot summer. So hot that we went out for canyoning with with a friend from a local alpine club. The Hyoe valley is located at the foot of Mt Ontake and has numerous waterfalls. Our itenerary covered the short distance of about 500m only, but we could enjoy spectacular views, diving and water sliding, and feel refleshed all the time in crystal clear but chilly water. Another purpose was to evaluate this route as future product and we are satisfied with overall result.
Rock climbing training at Maze, Gero-city Hida
In the mountainous Hida region in central Japan, our friends at the local HIDA ALPINE CLUB opened a route of 35m. Called Tate-kabe (standing wall), this site is located ideally just next to the emerald green Maze River famous for trout fishing nationwide.

Japanese Alps - Japan Travel
Japanese Alps - Japan Travel - The Japanese Alps is a series of mountain ranges in Japan that bisect the main island of Honshū. The name was coined by William Gowland, the Father of Japanese Archaeology, and later popularized by Reverend Walter Weston (1861--1940), an English missionary for whom a memorial plaque is located at Kamikochi, a tourist destination known for its alpine climate. When Gowland coined the phrase, however, he was only referring to the Hida MountainsThree ranges
Today, the Japanese Alps encompass the Hida Mountains, the Kiso Mountains and the Akaishi Mountains. These towering ranges include several peaks exceeding 3,000 m (9,843 ft) in height, the tallest after Mount Fuji. The highest are Mount Hotaka at 3,190 m (10,466 ft) and Mount Kita at 3,193 m (10,476 ft). Mount Ontake in Nagano Prefecture, at 3,067 m (10,062 ft), is a destination for pilgrimages as well as an active volcano, having erupted most recently in 1979 and 1980.
The Northern Alps, also known as the Hida Mountains, are a mountain range which stretches through Nagano, Toyama and Gifu prefectures. A small portion of the mountains also reach into Niigata Prefecture.
