Episode 081: Shegar (New Tingri)
Everything New Is Old Again. We've rolled into the little town of Shegar, otherwise known as NEW Tingri. Man, what a sense of deja vu. I feel like I've been here before.
Actually, in many ways I have. New Tingri looks and feels just like Old Tingri, the little town Ben, Major and I tried to acclimate in back in 2003. Even the hotel we're staying in looks exactly the same. The difference is that the toilet facilities in Old Tingri were so much worse they were actually better than here in Shegar.
See, in Old Tingri there was a toilet that had no roof over it and so was exposed to the elements. Let's just say it had a nice, refreshing breeze blowing trough it. No such luck here in New Tingri. The air inside the bathroom is oppressive.
These are hard places to live but the people are the friendliest yet. I have found that to be true the world over.

Episode 089: Dingri, Old Tingri
He Has Asked For The Pancake. Well, here we are back in Tingri. Not New Tingri but Old Tingri, the gateway to the Everest region in Tibet. Honestly I never thought I'd be back here after 2003, but life is funny that way.
Of all the experiences I've had in Tibet, Old Tingri is one I can do without. This place is just so rough. You might think it looks a lot like Shegar did, and you'd be right, but Tingri has something else: more tourist traffic. See, almost every expedition that goes to the North side of Everest here in Tibet passes through Tingri.
For many climbers, this is their first taste or rural Tibet. Since most people only spend a couple of days here acclimating to the altitude--and are slightly altitude sick when they arrive--people tent to mistreat Tingri a bit.
All of that comes through in the energy and the feeling of this place. It just feels tired and abused.
We'll do our best to treat it with respect. Thank goodness we're only spending one night here!

Episode 009: Tingri Office and Day Spa
American Prayer Flags. Well, we're now in the shadow of Mount Everest, in the little town of Tingri, Tibet. This place is around 14,000 feet and a popular spot for climbers to start getting used to the altitude. We're staying in a little hotel right off of Main St. and since there are so few trees around, the building is mostly made out of mud.The walls all seem to be several feet thick and our rooms are decorated with wall coverings that can only be described as hot pink floral-print sheets. My head has begun to pound from the altitude and I have to admit I'm a little foggy. Of course, all of the doorways are around 5 feet tall and every time I walk through one I hit square in my forehead and it's leaving a welt. This is not helping! Tingri has obviously evolved to serve the needs of climbers with the turnoff for Everest Base Camp just a few kilometers down the road. Unfortunately, it appears that too many people stop through here and the town can't quite keep up with it all. I don't want to seem negative or spoiled, I'm a guest in this country, but Tingri is filthy. It's a very rough place to spend a couple of days and there's just this pervasive feeling of depression hanging over me. In fact, the first night we were here Ben, Major and I were sitting in our room talking when I suddenly burst out into gigantic, wailing sobs. I cried for a good 10 minutes thinking about how far away from home we were. How far away from my wife, Heidi, I was. The funny thing is, that our Sherpa crew of Lhawang, Pasang, Pempa and Boca only just spent one night here. Early the next morning they packed up the truck and headed on to base camp leaving patient Dawa to stay with us. They knew better than hang around in Tingri! Ugh, I can't wait to get out of here and get up to base camp myself. I don't want to be inside any longer. Major feels the same way even though he's not feeling too well. He looks ill. Hopefully he's just homesick, too.

Gama valley - Tibet's hidden valley east of Everest
This film portrays Mt Everest's now-preserved Gama Valley -- sometimes called the most beautiful valley in the world. The Gama (sometimes incorrectly spelled Kama) Valley is a seldom-visited, hidden valley where four summits (Everest, Lhotse, Chomolonzo, Makalu) circle magnificent forests and flowers. Deforestation of the two-meter diameter trees had started in the late 1980s when the valley became a core zone in the Qomolangma (Mt Everest) National Nature Preserve. This film is narrated primarily by Daniel C Taylor who was the principal instigator working with the Government of China to create the national park ... and subsequently other parks across the Tibet Autonomous Region.
Located at the downstream of PumQu in Tingri county and Dinggye county, Garma valley, “the most beautiful valley in the world” is 55km from east to west and 8km from south to north, covering an area of 440km2. The various ecological zones boast different types of evergreen, half-evergreen and other primeval forests. The most unusual type of forest is consisted of junipers, which cover a vast area of the virgin forest. Its ancient and majestic appearance makes you feel like travelling in ancient time. The wondrous snow mountains, wild flowers, wild animals are waiting for you. It is truly a trekking paradise. If you like great scenic views, why not just walk in the Garma Valley.
But this place is not easy to reach. The only transportation available is through yaks and horses. The journey requires lots of energy and stamina. Therefore, if you decide to go, you need to get well prepared both physically and mentally.
From Garma valley, you can have a vantage point to enjoy the vista of snow mountains and glaciers only at a price of raising your head. Besides, Mt. Everest is covered with giant glaciers, among which the longest is 26km Rongbuk Glacier. And on those glaciers, there are various seracs, majestic ice cliffs, adventurous cracks, and even thrilling avalanches.
Unlike normal treks, apart from a local guide, travelers will have to hire a cook, some yaks and yak porters with them. A local guide is necessary because the roads are complicated and rough. Because of the high elevation, camping at the foot of the snow mountain is pretty exciting and somehow challenging. Bring the warmest sleeping bag you have. The temperature will drop dramatically when night falls. It may be very heavy for you to carry so much, but when others are too frozen to get asleep, you wouldn’t regret it.
One thousand years ago when Guru Rinpoche bought Buddhism in Tibet, he found Gama valley as a retreat. We can find beautiful rocks out there mixed with different minerals. They are very unusual and there are cultural description why these rocks are here.
Its a rare rock that we will find and the special fact about these rock are in the shape of a cave, mountain and rock.

Tibet Adventure Day 5 Nyalam to Old Tingri
Today was to be a rather long trek from Nyalam to the small town of Old Tingri just off the main road to Everest Base camp. We started the trip just like yesterday and headed up over Lalungla pass. The only difference today was the freezing weather.
Up onto the pass summit and we had our first test of riding these Royals on dirt which turned out to be extremely easy.
We stopped at a nice restaurant for lunch but when asked where the toilets were we decided to make other plans!!!........I wonder why!!!
The road from there was rather long and right across the tops of the mountains and by the time we arrived at Snow Leopard Resort we were all knackred!!
