Cycling in northwestern China (Urumqi to Yining) across Tian Shan Mountains
Editing by Mike Chernishov
In August 2006, as part of a larger round-the-world journey (14degrees.org), I cycled from Urumqi to Korgos in northwestern China, crossing the Tian Shan mountain range south of Urumqi on the way. 4,200m high passes, getting arrested, terrible (=fun) roads. The mission was to visit the birthplace of my friend Mike's father, an ethnic Russian born there in northwestern China, in a small town called Narat. This is a collection of footage and photos from that small part of my journey. Massive thanks to Mike for putting them all together; what I dismissed as un-usable crappy footage, Mike has managed to salvage it into something that very nicely conveys the spirit of that part of the journey.

Changing Landscapes in the Tien Shan Mountains of Kyrgyzstan
Dr. Win McLaughlin (Oberlin College) discusses how ecosystems rapidly and drastically change, driving the evolution of modern cold-adapted organisms and ecological communities, as illustrated by the Tien Shan of Kyrgyzstan.
The high Tien Shan mountains that dominate Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia are some of the youngest mountains on Earth. Their extremely rapid uplift continues today, affecting humans with a high earthquake hazard. This ‘mountain-building’ has drastically impacted life and ecosystems over the past 10 million years. As recently as five million years ago, the Tien Shan mountains were semi-forested landscapes full of fantastic beasts such as tusked rhinos, spike-headed giraffes, and grizzly-bear-sized hyenas.
Early snowfall seen in mountainous Tianshan region of Xinjiang
A rare cold front has blasted northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, bringing with it heavy snowfall. The snow started on Friday evening along the Tianshan Mountain area, and dwindled on Saturday morning. As temperatures fell to -3 °C, the local traffic department has reminded people to avoid traveling into areas closed to visitors.

Xinjiang Climbing Expedition
This is a climbing expedition to the Kok Shaal Tau Mountain Range, a sub-range of the Tien Shan Mountains on the border of China and Kyrgyzstan. We were there in August and September of 2000. Our team of four was led by Mike Libecki, and included brothers Jed and Doug Workman, plus myself. The area has infinite possibilities for the adventurous spirit. The images here depict our journey to a remote unexplored valley where we attempted the first ascent of a peak we called The Grand Poobah because of its domineering presence at the head of the valley. Recent research reveals an alternate Kyrgyz name: Peak Byeliy, (5697m)

Cold snap brings winter back to Xinjiang and Gansu
China's northwest regions of Xinjiang and Gansu have been experiencing a lot of extreme weather since the start of the spring season. Affected by the cold wave coming in from Siberia, heavy snow has hit the northern part of Xinjiang's Yili, Bozhou, Tacheng and Tianshan areas since Tuesday. The temperature dropped by five to eight degrees Celsius, and it brought the region back to winter overnight. Meanwhile, dusty weather has swept northern China since last weekend, bringing strong winds and dust to Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Ningxia and Shaanxi. Jiuquan city in Gansu province even experienced strong sandstorms yesterday. It is already the fourth time this year that sandstorms have hit the country's northern regions -- double the number during the same period last year.

Snowfall Inconveniences northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region
A snowstorm has engulfed many areas across northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
Affected by a grim spate of cold air, Zhaosu County in Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture has witnessed constant snowfall since Tuesday, dropping the temperature down to five degrees Celsius below zero. A local meteorological department forecasts that the snowy weather will last until Sunday. The transportation sector has arranged for more traffic officers to be on guard near crossings of slippery roads to ensure the safe travel of drivers.
Fruit Valley, a well-known resort boasting a variety of beautiful sights, has also embraced snowfall and slush accompanied by thick fog Monday morning, reducing visibility to less than 100 meters.
The Valley's downtown square is clad in beautiful silvery white. Traffic officers remind drivers to turn on fog lights and maintain safe distances in this weather.
A West Siberian trough has created a snowstorm over Tacheng Prefecture and consequently a radical drop in temperature. The local agriculture sector suggests farmers and herdsmen reap crops as soon as possible as the snow is occurring during this year's harvest season.
Spells of rainy weather have a certain impact on the harvest and loosening of the soil in the future, said Xing Jun, deputy director of the agricultural bureau of Shawan County under Tacheng.
Snow has enveloped Wenquan County in Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture since early Monday morning, severely affecting the transportation and agricultural operations throughout the area.
In northern Kuqa County in Aksu Prefecture, sleet that began on Monday morning has brought many inconveniences to vehicles and passengers. The temperature has plunged to minus two or three degrees Celsius.
