In September 2012, over a period of 18 days and nights, five flames were gathered from five Buddhist mountains in China (Wutai, Emei, Putuo, Jiuhua, and Xuedou) and placed together at the 2012 Maitreya Cultural Festival. The flames symbolized loving-kindness, compassion, wisdom, aspiration, and action. These flames were transferred to the newly-constructed Peace Hall during the 2013 Maitreya Cultural Festival, as shown in this video.

MOJO DAY 7 Exploring Guyuan Part 2
須彌山-The Holy Mountain
The mean idea of animation, “The holy mountain” is from the Buddhism philosophy, “ the Mount Meru”, it is the center of the world. And it’s also a metaphor of the summit of human beings’ life journey and the place for serenity in mind. This artwork is inspired by my traveling experiences of mountain hiking in Jade Mountain in Taiwan and the Angkor Wat in Cambodia. There are so many triangle icon to imply into the holy mountain, it is just like people who pray for god with this gesture, two hands holding closely just like a triangle mountain. I learned from Xia Jing Shan’s Chinese ink paintings’ and his life philosophy, life is like a path during mountain-hiking, all the way going up and down and encountering the obstacles. And climb up to the very top of the holy mountain, the goal of life.
In my childhood memory, I always sit in front of my window which is surrounded by the iron bars cage, although it looked beautiful, and I watched the city scenery through the cage window. It seemed like I was limited in an iron cage and imagine another scenery in my mind. Sometimes I dreamed of a holy mountain in front of me which is made of concrete jungle buildings. The
limitation for me is just like social expectation and judgement which made me limited. And windows is a transition between the real and mental space. It brings me to another space, it can be the past, now and the future, somewhere I dream of. I also choose wire fence which is usually seen on the top of house wall. This
icon strongly represents the bounded social status.
At the end of animation, I bring the mountain sceneries into people’s eye, just like your vision in mind, praying for the peaceful life mountain.
Giant Buddha & Mount Emai, Leshan, China (UNESCO World Heritage)
A mountain carved to be a Buddha (Bodhisattva, Maitreya) between 713-803 AD a monument after a Buddhist monk returned from visit to India bringing back Indian Buddhist texts translating from Sanskrit. Be ready to go up & down over two thousand or more uneven and at places narrow steps. No wonder when I went in 2009, I was the only non-Chinese in the whole crowed. It is located where 3 rivers merge and the whole view is breathtaking. Mount Emei has several ancient Buddhist temples, one of which is said to be of Hindu style architecture. Suitable fora motivated, healthy, adventurous non-Chinese traveler. Carry your own bottle water. My backpack was over 8 kg. Narration in English.

Episode 159: The Maitreya Buddha
Did I Mention That It's Big? We spent the morning today exploring the Tashilhunpo Monastery here in Shigatse. I've been waiting to return to this monastery since the moment I left it back in 2007. I was incredibly impressed with the large statue of the Maitreya Buddha but filming it was off limits. No so this year, but more on that later.
The Tashilhunpo Monastery is truly a city within a city. Within the monastery's walls are a tightly regulated population of monks numbering in the thousands. Around 4,000 as I understand it. The monastery was founded during the mid 15th century by the first Dalai Lama and is the traditional seat of the Tashi or Panchen Lama.
The monastery grounds are a labyrinth of walking paths and alleyways between buildings. One of the things that blows my mind is that even though it's crowded now, apparently 2/3 of it's buildings were destroyed during China's Cultural Revolution! Hard to imagine what this place must have been like 100 years ago. Hearing about the Cultural Revolution here in Tibet continually causes my heart to ache.
In addition to the Panchen Lama, Tashilhunpo Monastery is also famous for a relatively new addition to it's ancient grounds, the century-old statue of the Maitreya Buddha. I went on and on about this statue in 2007 and it was no different this year aside from one small detail: this year I was able to film the statue!
The Maitreya Buddha is the largest indoor statue of a sitting Buddha in the world and seeing it for the first time produces a true jaw-dropping moment. The buddha is enormous, gilded, colorful and beautiful. Everything seems to be big in this part of the world but still, the size of Tashilhunpo's Maitreya Buddha makes your head hurt.
It's big. Very big. Extremely big. Amazingly big. Tremendously big. Magnificently big.
I guess what I'm trying to say here, is that it's big.
