*How to Travel to Matsumoto Castle by Train*
From Tokyo to Nagano it takes 1 hour and 22 mins on the Shinkansen. Then from Nagano station, you’ll take the JR to Matsumoto Station which takes about 50 minutes. From Matsumoto station, it is a short 15 minute walk to the castle.
*Matsumoto Travel Tip*
Before heading to Matsumoto I dropped off my luggage in a locker at Nagano station. It's a convenient way to not have to carry a large suitcase everywhere you go for a day. It's super easy to use - just follow the instructions on the computer.
Even though this machine is marked with Suica you can still use PASMO and vice versa. If you're using an older coin locker you should take a picture of the locker and the area around it just in case you forget where it is when you come back for your stuff.
*Does It Cost Money to Visit Matsumoto Castle?*
If you don't want to pay to go into the castle, you can walk around the castle. It is a relaxing stroll and be sure to take plenty of photos of the castle from different angles.
It cost 610 yen a person to go inside the castle courtyard and castle.
*Matsumoto Castle fun facts*
Here are some interesting facts about Matsumoto castle:
- It is unique because it is a hirajiro which is a castle built on plains rather than on a hill or mountain. Because of this the castle has to build its own defense system which includes inter-connecting walls, moats, and gatehouses. Also it makes for great picture because of the Northern Alps in the background of the castle
- There are 12 castles all around Japan but only two is five stories high: this one and Himeji castle. But there's a secret inside: there is an extra floor inside that looks like a loft.
- Matsumoto castle is also known as the black castle because of its black exterior
*Frog Street: Nawate Dori Street*
On your way back to the JR station don't forget to check out Nawate dori street, which is also known as frog street.
There used to be a ton of Kajika frogs which roamed this area. In 1959, a typhoon came and caused the river to overflow. This made all the frogs leave for higher ground and cleaner water upstream. The people worked hard to clean up the river, but the frogs never came back. The people of the city then built many artificial frogs to bring Nawate Street’s spirit back.
In 1972, the Kaeru Daimyoujin, a mini frog shrine, was created to revamp the old street. Nawate Street was then coined Kaeru Machi ('Frog Street'), a place where locals and travelers could bask in the lively atmosphere of days past.
It is Matsumoto's Edo Era-themed shopping street. It takes you back into history and see how shops back then used to look like. There are cute boutique shops and antique dealers. If you want a little snack there are bakeries and candy stories.

Kamikochi - Trekking Through the National Park in Japan (4K)
Kamikochi, sometimes also known as the Little Yosemite. This scenic valley is at an altitude of 1,500 m above sea level and surrounded by high mountains of the Northern Japan Alps in Nagano Prefecture, Japan.
The views of mountains and river are absolutely breathtaking that it was appointed as a Special Natural Monument and a Special Place of Scenic Beauty. It is only one of the two places that hold both titles at once together with Kurobe Gorge. Endless photo opportunities await. If you an outdoor person, Kamikochi has some very nice camping sites with access to many peaks: Mt. Hotaka (3,190 m), Mt. Yake (2,455 m), Mt. Yari (3,180 m), Mt. Jonen (2,857) and more. Definitely worth visiting.

DAY 1 - Take an overnight bus from Shinjuku all the way to Kamikochi.（
DAY 2 - Arrive at Kamikochi and enjoy a real getaway .
DAY 3 - Wake up early to do a morning yoga, then go on to visit Japan's oldest original castle Matsumoto Castle.
DAY 4 - Return to Tokyo safely with energy filled.

Kamikochi and Yakedake
Kamikochi is a resort in the Northern part of the Japan Alps in the Nagano prefecture. One of the easiest ways to reach this area is by bus or car from Matsumoto.
Yakedake is an active volcano within Kamikochi and is what we hiked during this trip.
There are many benefits of being in nature, whether it is on a hike or a simple walk.
1) Encourages physical activity
2) Reduces stress and anxiety levels
3) Feel good endorphins for overall better mood
4) Can even help short and long term memory
Through our nature videos we hope that you are inspired to take some time with family and/or friends and go out into nature. Always remember to be safe and bring plenty of water and food. We advise to never hike alone for safety reasons and before a hike please let someone know where you're hiking and expected time of return.

Mount Yakedake Hike in Kamikochi, Japan!!
Hi guys ! Below are our trip details :
19 October 2019 : Highway bus from Umeda Station, Osaka to Kamikochi , Nagano
20 October 2019 : Arrive in Kamikochi at 5 am , change to our hiking attire , pray and breakfast
before start our hike. The view was amazing once the sun rises slowly ,
unveiling the Azusawa river , the Hida mountain range... We walk to the
head trail of Mt Yakedake , and start our hike !
Total hike : 8 hours , Ascend 4 hours 30 minutes and descend 3 hours 30
minutes , Total of 10.5 km hike .
Arrive at our campsite around 5 pm and set up our tent , had our dinner and
played cards before we sleep. We'll add more videos later !
21 October 2019 : Woke up with an amazing morning fog view. Had our breakfast and visit
Miyoji Pond around 2.7 km leisure hike from our camp site in Konashidaira
Campsite. Took the bus bcak to Osaka at 3.40 pm and arrived at 10 pm

Matsumoto Castle, first built in 1504, is one of the three premier castles in Japan. Why? Because of its historic background and beautiful appearance. Different from most of Japan’s other castles, it is a well-preserved, completely wooden structure. And the graceful figure of black Matsumoto Castle stands out clear against Nagano’s snow-covered Japan North Alps mountain range and crisp blue sky. Due to this chic black exterior, citizens affectionately call it “Crow Castle.” It’s a 15-minute walk from JR Matsumoto Station.

Natürlich ist Matsumoto berühmt für seine Burg, aber es gibt noch ein Paar andere Dinge zu erleben. Wer etwas mehr Zeit mitgebracht hat, kann im Matsumoto Art Museum Werke Japanischer Künstler bewundern. Eine der berühmtesten Töchter der Stadt ist sicherlich Yayoi Kusama, deren Arbeiten sich besonders durch die konsequente Darstellung von Polka Dots auszeichnen. Da sie in Matsumoto geboren wurde, hat sie die Gestaltung der Außenfassade des Museums übernommen und gleich wieder ihr Markenzeichen zum Einsatz gebracht. Außerdem ein bisschen schmusen mit John????Love you!

Kamikochi (上高地, Kamikōchi) is a popular resort in the Northern Japan Alps of Nagano Prefecture, offering some of Japan's most spectacular mountain scenery.
Kamikochi is a roughly 15 kilometer long plateau in the Azusa River Valley, about 1500 meters above sea level. It is surrounded by tall mountains, including Nishihotakadake (2909 m), Okuhotakadake (3190 m), Maehotakadake (3090 m) and the active volcano Yakedake (2455 m).
