Attaché Bites - Fujinomiya
Trying something new here. During our shoots we often capture footage or experiences that are off the cuff or don't fit into a planned episode but are too damned good to throw away. Or a segment we planned for 30 seconds ends up being so good it deserves its own video...like this one! So we wanted to share them with you. Here's the first - our experiences in Fujinomiya!
Friend of Attaché and local food expert with Arigato Japan, Asami, is a Fujinomiya native and incredibly proud of the region's food.
Fujinomiya and Shizuoka in general loves to put its own twist on classic comfort food dishes; yakisoba, gyoza, onigiri, and soba. Instantly recognisable but uniquely Fujinomiya.
If you want to hang with Asami on one of her food tours, check out

Japan Trip: Mt. Fuji Hike - Quest to the Summit
Second time in Japan. First time hiking up Mt. Fuji.
Some audio is hard to hear because of the winds. Sorry!
This was a great hike, but also a bit tougher than expected especially with experiencing high winds, cold temperatures, and rain. I'd say I was already in fairly good shape but also prepared myself physically with exercise months before. There were people of all ages on this hike from young kids to older people. Be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks because buying them at huts while on the trail can get expensive the higher you go. Restroom toilets are also not free, about 200 yen. No one watches if you pay or not, but it's about the honor system so it's expected for you to pay and it helps to maintain the mountain.
I initially planned on doing this hike by booking it with a tour group. But found that it was cheaper to plan in on my own.
I booked a roundtrip bus from Tokyo (Shinjuku) that travelled directly to the Fuji Subaru 5th Station which is where most people begin their hike. Then on your return trip, be sure choose a time and plan around when you think you'd make it from the summit back to the 5th station. It took me approximately 2.5-3 hours back down.
I booked my mountain hut reservation using: fujimountainguides.com

We went to Mt. Fuji in Japan on Oct 4th, 2013. This is just after the off season, but the weather was great and it was safe to climb. There was barely anyone on the mountain with us. I think we saw 2 other people.
We started at the 5th station at 8:00 am and climbed to the top of Mt. Fuji. We took the Yoshida Trail. After the 8 station, the air gets thin and it is a lot harder to climb. It is an odd and awesome feeling.
Around the 6th station we found a snowboard. I thought it was a good idea to carry it to the top of Mt. Fuji and try to snowboard down. I failed miserably :)
We took a bus from Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal in Tokyo to Mt. Fuji 5th station. You can make bus reservations here:
We also stayed at a hostel near Mt. Fuji called K’s House:

THE BEST VIEW OF Mt. FUJI | Mt. Mitsutoge | Hero7Black 4K
This trail had some of the BEST views of Mt. Fuji that I've seen!
TRACK DETAILS: Starting at Mitsu-toge station on the Fujikyu railway line, the entire trail is very clearly signposted—in both English (Mitsu-toge-yama) and Japanese (三つ峠山). Turn left on exiting the only ticket gate, then turn left again at the road and pass underneath the railway tracks. Look up and the splendor of Mt. Fuji should already be in view. It is actually best seen in winter (from November to February), when skies are mostly clear; however, mid-July worked for me too—what a beauty!
For the first hour follow the narrow paved road. Continuing along the river northwestwards, you will pass the Green Centre (グリーンセンター) sports area and a couple of small waterfalls later on. Keep going until you reach the actual forest trail, which starts at a distinctive round boulder that looks like a traditional Japanese Daruma doll, hence its name: Daruma-ishi (達磨石), Daruma stone.
From here it’s a steady 2-hour climb on a very well maintained and not particularly difficult path, through beautiful natural forest. After passing the 88 Buddha statues, with their red aprons, you reach a very popular rock-climbing spot. It is amazing to see how the climbers literally hang on somewhere in the middle of the rock face! After that you get to a couple of stepped tracks, both leading to the ridge right below Kaiun-yama, the highest of Mitsu-toge-yama's three peaks. On the ridge there are two mountain huts, where you can even spend the night, or, alternatively, just take a rest at one of the picnic tables outside.
Although the views from the huts are already impressive, for a breath-taking 360-degree view—weather permitting of course—you need to put in another 10-minute climb to get to the very top (Kaiun-yama, 開運山, 1785m). Just follow the ridge to the right towards the large television antennas. Rest assured, the antennas won’t spoil the experience; the view of Mt. Fuji, its surrounding forest, the neighboring mountains and the lakes is simply awesome.
For the descent down to Kawaguchiko go back down along the treeless ridge to the mountain huts and follow the trail which starts from behind the second hut (Mitsu-toge-sanso, 三つ峠山荘). It’s a long but very pleasant ridge-line descent (about 2 hours), signposted Tenjo-zan (天上山) or Kachi Kachi ropeway (カチカチロープウェイ). The signs are mostly in Japanese, so it’s a good idea to try to remember these Japanese characters. The trail will lead you back to the top of the ropeway, and all of a sudden you are back in civilization, this being a popular weekend destination.
The walk down to the lake takes only 30 minutes. Alternatively, the ropeway gets you there in 3. From the bottom of the ropeway it’s only a 10-minute walk to Kawaguchiko station, from where you can get a train back to Tokyo.

Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha - Shizuoka - 富士山本宮浅間大社 - 4K Ultra HD
Located in the southwestern foothills of Mount Fuji in the city Fujinomiya, Fujisan Sengen Shrine a regionally important shrine and head shrine of over 1300 Sengen and Asama shrines across Japan. Originally built over a millennium ago for the protection against a volcanic eruption, the Fujisan Sengen Shrine is also one of the traditional starting points to climb Mt. Fuji. While being one of Japan's oldest shrines, the Fujisan Sengen Shrine has suffered from many natural disasters and all that remains intact today is its unique two-story inner shrine construction as well as its outer shrine buildings and tower gate.
Alongside its heavy cultural and spiritual heritage the Fujisan Sengen Shrine also offers a beautiful sakura festival thanks to its 500 cherry trees usually blooming around late March to early April.

At the Top of Mount Fuji - Japan. It's Cold
Once we got to the top we almost died it was so cold. Classic trip though.
A Day in the Country Side in Japan . 日本の村
Fujinomiya has developed around the Sengen Grand Shrine. The shrine is the headquarters of the Sengen shrines around Japan worshipping Mt. Fuji as the deity named Princess of Blossoms (Konohana-sakuya-hime). On the shrine’s ground 500 cherry trees are dedicated to her. She is the symbol of beauty and piety thus the guardian of happy home and easy childbirth. Because the town is well-watered thanks to runoff from Mt. Fuji, people come here to pray also for water, safety while traveling, fishing and good harvest, and against fires. The current pavilions were built under the patronage of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the father of the Edo shogunate government, in 1604. Ieyasu’s donation enabled the Sengen Grand Shrine to manage the summit area of Mt. Fuji above the 8th station as part of its precincts.
Wakutama-ike, which literally means Pond of Rising Bubbles, is one of the notable structures in the main precincts of the Sengen Grand Shrine. It is a spring of the rainwater and the melted snow of Mt. Fuji that travel through the aquifer made of layers of volcanic rock before bubbling up from the ground. Hence the pond is the end of the ancient lava flow. This large quantity of water flows into Kanda River running through Fujinomiya City. The pond is designated as a special natural monument (tokubetsu tennen kinen-butsu).
