Algarve Bike Challenge 2018 - The Documentary
Algarve Bike Challenge is considered to be one of the most unique mountain stage bike races in the offroad cycling calendar.
The 6th edition of the race was held over 3 days in the beautiful Portuguese Algarve region and the riders had to cover in total around 150km, with more than 3000m of elevation gain! Single tracks, remote forests, historic and cultural sights, technical downhills and steep climbs are some of the key factors that make the Algarve Bike Challenge so unique.
With so many riders participating across five different categories, the event's director Marco Fernandes knew that he had to deliver the best conditions to enable competitors to excel their performance.
The first prologue stage was the great warm up for the riders. The first big challenge for the riders was definitely the narrow streets and the centenary cobble stones of Tavira. The kings of the first stage were Valdemar Teixeira and David Belo.
On the second stage, the riders moved to the countryside – for the queen 2nd stage. Here, the riders came across the biggest and most demanding stage with an 80km distance and a 2,600m vertical elevation into Portuguese nature. Antonio Ortiz and Julen Zubero were the first across the finish line on this stage with just one more day remaining.
The third and final stage was under the Portuguese sun. Spectators cheered for a final time as the riders pushed themselves to their limits... crossing rivers, making aggressive turns... and facing muddy conditions over the 70km course. Antonio Ortiz and Julen Zubero secured the second place in the final stage, which gave them the overall win and the desired yellow jersey!
One more exciting edition is over! 840 athletes in total took part in this amazing event and 704 were able to declare themselves as Finishers! Wonderful Tavira in Algarve now awaits the riders in 2019 for yet another spectacular event!
