Why Ninh Binh (Vietnam) should be on the TOP of your travel bucket list
We decided to skip busy Ha Long Bay to explore Ninh Binh instead which has been described as Ha Long Bay on land. We have to say we have zero regrets. Ninh Binh turned out to be one of the most memorable parts of our Vietnam trip.
We start this vlog off with a tour of our accommodation. Located right at the bottom of the Mua Caves we stayed at Hang Mua Ecolodge.
Hang Mua Ecolodge
Address: Khê Hạ, Ninh Xuân, Ninh Xuân, Hoa Lư, Ninh Bình 430000, Vietnam
With a tranquil view of the limestone caves to one side and rice fields on the other it made for an excellent accommodation in Ninh Binh for 5 days.
Once we were settled in it was time to climb the peak of the Hang Mua mountain where we could get a beautiful view of the surrounding area.
The next day we were picked up by our Ninh Binh private tour operator - Tommy’s Travel Service. Tommy is a Ninh Binh local unlike many of the other Ninh Binh tour operators and he organized an awesome schedule for us. If you're planning a visit to Ninh Binh Vietnam, we highly recommend Tommy's Travel Service. He's a real nice guy too!
Firstly we visited Trang An for a boat tour. This is also the former set for the Skull Island scenes from the King Kong Movie (which have since been removed, so we were lucky to have seen it). We were rowed through various caves and canals and saw amazing scenery unique to Ninh Binh. From the surrounding limestone caves to the complex water systems that ran between, we left with the most wonderful impression of Ninh Binh.
Ecotourism Trang An Boat Tour
Address: Tràng An, Ninh Xuân, Hoa Lư, Ninh Bình 431995, Vietnam
Hours: Monday - Sunday 7AM–4PM
Following the tour of Trang An we head over to visit two tombs of former emperors of Hue followed by lunch then Phat Diem Cathedral which is a unique cathedral that has a mixture of both Vietnamese and Gothic French architecture.
Phat Diem
Address: TT. Phát Diệm, Kim Sơn District, Ninh Bình Province 430000, Vietnam

EXPLORING VIETNAM: Trang An, Ninh Binh, Tam Coc, Hang Mua | Travel Vlog
This was the scariest (and one of the best things I've ever done). Exploring Trang An grottoes and travelling around Ninh Binh including climbing up to Tam Coc to Hang Mua peak! I was also followed by a family of mountain goats - turns out I was the pigeon in this case.

Vietnam, Ninh Binh, ENDLESS CAVE SYSTEM!
Our journey through Vietnam led us to a Province Called Ninh Binh. a friendly place where there are massive river cave systems in which you can ride a bout through for as little as $7 US, well worth it! it goes for 2 hours and the cave system is awesome the whole way! Vietnam has many beautiful places but the was by far one on the most amazing this we did.
My Favorite Place in Vietnam: Tam Coc // Ninh Binh, Vietnam
After four straight days of non-stop travel, I arrived at my final destination before Hanoi: Tam Coc. This area near Ninh Binh, Vietnam is just stunning!
Imagine the famous Ha Long Bay with its tall, narrow limestone peaks jutting out of the water, but instead of water, there were lush green rice fields. Also, less tourists... That's Tam Coc!

I arrived in Ninh Binh after spending the night in a sleeper car on a train from Dong Hoi. I wasn't sure if I'd find a place to store my bag, but immediately I saw signs to a place that would take them and rent me a bike. From there, I rode to Tam Coc and found myself surrounded by an emerald dream. The landscape was absolutely stunning!
I made my way to Bich Dong Pagoda, the home of three historic temples built into a mountain. Then, I biked along the river to watch the tourists who rented boats float through the countryside. I took a break from bike riding to at Thai Vi Temple, a isolated, quiet retreat in the middle of a valley. And then I climbed up the most stunning view of Tam Coc at Hang Mua, where I got to take in all the the gorgeousness of this beautiful place.

Vietnam Airlines - Travel to Mua Cave, Ninh Binh, Vietnam
Like to get panoramic view of Tam Coc - Ha Long bay on land. How about conquering Mua mountain?
It's a worth visiting to reach the peak of Mua mountain, you will stand a chance to feast your eyes on impressive overview of golden rice fields & limestone mountains along Ngo Dong river in Tam Coc. For breathtaking sights, you’d better trekk in May when the rice is getting ripe from green to yellow colours.

EXPLORING VIETNAM: HOA LU, MUA CAVE, TAM COC (NINH BINH) - DAY TRIP 2019
???? Continuing the series EXPLORING VIETNAM, this time i choose to travel HOA LU, MUA CAVE and TAM COC (boat trip) in Ninh Binh province. It has many great other tourist attractions such as Trang An, Bai Dinh pagoda, ... but maybe I will travel next time.
???? Hoa Lu was the ancient capital of Vietnam in the past. There has many places to worship the King.
???? Mua Cave (Dancing cave) is really great and has amazing view. I have to climb up 1000 steps in total, therefore visiting here in winter is a good choice.
???? Boat trip to Tam Coc (it means 3 caves) is also a new experience to me. The panorama view, the weather, people is nice.
???? Ninh Binh is a recomendation place that you should visit when reaching Hanoi.

Visiting the Mua Caves Ecolodge in Ninh Binh, Vietnam
Mua Caves is an area of mountains, caves, and rive paddies near Ninh Binh and Tam Coc in Vietnam. The view is incredible and well worth the nearly 400 stairs you need to climb to get there!

Mua Caves is worth being visited in Ninh Binh, believe me !
The cave brings you one of the best panoramic view of one of the nicest sceneries in Viet Nam- that’s Ninh Binh- which is known as a wonder of the world, the Telegraph from UK said “It’s an area known locally as Vietnam’s ‘Inland Halong Bay’”.
This can’t be denied since more and more foreigners choose Mua Cave( Hang Mua – Vietnamese name) for their short holidays while being in the north of Viet Nam
Mua cave is near Hanoi city, far from it about 90 km. It belongs to a cultural land of Ninh Binh
Mua cave is located in Khe Dau Ha village, Ninh Xuan commune, Hoa Lu district, Ninh Binh province. Together with Trang An ecological tourism complex, the terrain of Mua cave looks majestic with rolling mountains surrounding a whole large delta like a rampart is protecting the country inside.
Do you know that the name of Mua cave was originated from an old time story, when the King Tran came to Hoa Lu captital, he often stopped at Mua cave so there were dancing performances by emperial maids, so people call the cave is “Mua” ( dancing).
The road to Mua cave was imitated as Great wall of China. Although it may make you tired because of high steps, it becomes more interesting if you climb slowly and on the way you can take some nice photos.
In the summer it’s ideally to visit Mua cave for you to catch a panoramic view of ripe rice fields. But don’t worry at any time you totally admire peacefully imposing and stunning beauty of Ninh Binh.

Mua Cave Ninh Binh 500 Stairs - Vietnam Travel
The parking scam, the crazy steep 500 stairs and the crowds that come to Mua Cave Ninh Binh later in the day, are all worth enduring, just to get a glimpse of the amazing views you will see at the top of the mountain, where the lying dragon lives.
Or you can watch this video and see how we avoided nearly all of the above, haha.
The climb up to the dragon in the Mua Caves area, is one of the main reasons we came to Ninh Binh and after missing out on it the day before due to weather, we weren't going to miss this chance. We hoped on the Honda Wave,s, headed off early and arrived at 7:30am, around 30 minutes after opening.
And even at that time of the morning, we still had a couple of people trying to catch us out with the parking scam.
Any foreigner going down this road on a bike, is going to be yelled at, waved down and attempted to be convinced that this is where they must park if visiting the caves...It's all lies.
Ignore every parking sign and anyone that tries to tell you to stop, just carry on to the very end of the road, where you will see the entrance gates and ticket booth. Ride through the gates and turn left, where you will find a large, FREE, undercover parking area.
We normally wouldn't have an issue with locals taking the initiative and trying to make a dollar with a parking lot, but in this case, the stories and more so the warnings we got from other tourists who had been before us and experienced some pretty rough treatment and intimidation, has us labelling these Mua Cave setups, as a Vietnam parking scam to avoid.
Entry to the caves is VND100,000 per person and it took us around 2 hours to climb both peaks, admire the view, shoot some video, take some pictures and get back down. We were fortunate that there weren't many people there when we arrived and we made the decision to head straight to the highest peak first, to the dragon!
This worked out well, because when we started heading down from there and over to the lower peak, we saw a lot more people coming up. When we arrived at the second spot, there was actually a small queue forming to get to the very top and a number of people gathered up there, all trying to grab those instagram shots.

We are Leon and Tash, a New Zealand vlogging couple who set off on an amazing Vietnam adventure as fulltime travellers, backpacking Vietnam. But we weren't going to travel to Vietnam for one of those ordinary backpacking Vietnam trips you hear about everybody doing, where they go for a couple off weeks and check out the beaches or maybe riding through Vietnam at such a crazy pace that they never get off the beaten track. No we want more than that.
Our Vietnam adventures start with learning the way of the locals, taking just enough time to figure out how things work, discover what the Must see places in Vietnam are and more importantly where Vietnam's hidden gems are...
To do this, we moved to Danang Vietnam. The plan was to spend 3 months living in Da Nang, meeting and learning from locals about the culture, the amazing food, their way of living and what places they would recommend to travel in Vietnam.
And because Danang is in the middle of the country, we hoped we might meet other tourists or expats who were having their own Vietnam travel adventure or were at the halfway point of motorcycle riding through Vietnam and hear from them, what places they thought we must visit in Vietnam. Also, as new travel vloggers, having a base there meant we could try things like doing Da Nang Vietnam travel vlog or creating a Danang Vietnam travel guide, before also taking on the stresses of fulltime travel.
Then in month 4, that's when the real Vietnam adventure begins. With our new list of must see places, we will head to Saigon and buy a couple of motorbikes. to start our Vietnam road trip!
Motorcycle riding through Vietnam seems like one of the most hectic, crazy and chaotic things anyone could do, but we can't wait!! And we wont be following a simple South to North / Saigon to Hanoi route, we plan on doing more like a figure 8, so that our travel in Vietnam will cover both the inland and coastal areas of this amazing country.
So can we still say we are backpacking Vietnam? Or should we be telling people our travel in Vietnam is a motorcycle trip through Vietnam? We're not sure, but what we do know is, our Vietnam road trip is going to cover over 6000km's from Saigon right up to the famous waterfalls of Ban Gioc near Cao Bang, round the northern point of the Ha Giang loop and everything else we can access in between.
So we hope you'll join us, the New Zealand vlogging couple, on our Vietnam adventure by clicking subscribe to join the Tribe and experience our travel in Vietnam..
Hiking to the top of the Mua Cave in Ninh Binh, Vietnam
On our self-guided tour of Vietnam, we rode our bikes to explore Mua Cave (more of a mountain). It was a short bike ride from Tom Cac and had amazing views from the top! We also got some cool drone shots!
Check out our photos, how-to's and recommendations by clicking the link below:
Where is Mua Cave located?
In Ninh Binh which is a city in northern Vietnam about 94km/58 mi south of Hanoi.
How do you get to Nihn Bihn?
You need to get to the city of Ninh Binh which can be accessed via bus, train or motorbike from Hanoi. When we visited, we took a bus from Halong Bay. It was a 5-6 hour bus ride. We recommend staying in Tam Coc.
How do you get to Mua Cave?
From Ninh Binh you can take a taxi to Mua Cave. Alternatively, if you stay in Tam Coc, it is an easy bike ride. We highly recommend taking the scenic bike ride as you will cycle through rice fields, small villages and mountains.
How should you tour Mua Cave?
When you first arrive you will need to pay an entrance fee. Next explore the pond, statues and caves at the bottom of the mountain. Then start your ascent up the stairs to check out the panoramic views of Tam Coc and surrounding rice fields. Check out the shrines and the dragon.
How long does it take to tour Mua Cave?
Once you are to the site, we recommend 1.5-2 hours to explore.
When should you visit Mua Cave?
The stairs will get slippery when wet so we recommend doing this in dry conditions. You will avoid large crowds by going when it opens or closer to when it closes. It can get crowded at the top of the mountain.
Is the hike difficult?
The stairs are steep but wide enough that a group of people can take a break so you can do at your own pace.
How much does it cost?
The cost is 100,000 VND per person.
What should you bring?
Layers
Sunscreen and Sun Protection
Rain Protection
Water
Camera
Walking/Hiking Shoes
Money for entrance fee
2T2T TIPS
To avoid large crowds, go when it opens or right before it closes.
Be careful when exploring the dragon statue. There is no safety railing and can be very slippery.
Pair this with a boat tour of the Trang An Grottoes.
What else can you see nearby?
Take a boat ride through the Trang An Grottoes (4.3 km/2.67 mi)
Try out the Tam Coc Boat Ride (4.4 km/2.73 mi)
Shop in Tam Coc for some of Vietnam’s cheapest souvenirs (10.7 km/6.65 mi)

MUA CAVE - The Most Attractive Place in Ninh Binh /Ninh Binh Travel #3
I HATE THIS PLACE, ITS SO BEAUTIFUL
You will be fascinated when you come here???
On the third day in NinhBinh, I had a plan to visit Mua cave and TrangAn eco-tourism area, which are located not far from NinhBinh city.
This morning the weather in NinhBinh was so beautiful, so quiet, I spent about two hours to visit Mua cave
Climbing up about 500 steps, i reached to the top of the mountain, the scene here was beautiful and peaceful
I took a break and went down to visit the cave at the foot of the mountain, called Mua cave because this was the place where the King Tran often came to see the dance in the cave, Hang means Cave, Mua means Dancing
After that I continued to move to Trang An for boat ride
It was really nice place
