Ancient Muckross Abbey in Killarney National Park, Ireland
Our adorable Jarvey (Jaunting Car/Cart driver) and his horse Susie, dropped us off at Muckross Abbey/Priory and Linda Woods escorted us around its ruins. Muckross Abbey was founded by the Franciscans in the Fifteenth Century and although plundered by Cromwell's forces in 1652, the building is still gorgeous; especially the cloisters.
The roof had just been replaced and we walked through the main level before ascending stairs up to the second level with the monks lived. Access to the Abbey is all-year round and free.

Last day of our Ireland Adventure. Started in Killarney and stopped at Ross Castle first, then Muckross House, where we toured the grounds. Then drove the Rock of Cashel and got some aerial views of Cashel and Hore Abbey. Toured the inside of the chapel on Rock of Cashel and was awed by almost 1000 year old architecture and frescoes. Flew out of Dublin the next morning, back to Philly, then Chicago, then Minneapolis. It was a great trip!

Muckross Abbey is one of the major ecclesiastical sites found in the Killarney National Park, County Kerry, Ireland. It was founded in 1448 as a Franciscan friary for the Observantine Franciscans by Donal McCarthy Mor.
It has had a violent history and has been damaged and reconstructed many times. The friars were often subjected to raids by marauding groups and were persecuted by Cromwellian forces under Lord Ludlow.
Today the abbey is largely roofless although, apart from this, is generally quite well preserved. Its most striking feature is a central courtyard, which contains a large yew tree and is surrounded by a vaulted cloister.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, it became the burial place for prominent County Kerry poets O'Donoghue, Ó Rathaille and Ó Súilleabháin.

A Fun Jaunting Car/Cart Ride to Muckross Abbey Killarney National Park, Ireland
Do make time for a fun Jaunting Car (or Jaunting Cart) ride when visiting Ireland. As soon as I laid eyes on the many Jaunting Cars waiting for customers in Killarney National Park, and Killarney town, visions of The Quiet Man with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara riding in one flashed through my brain and I had to take one myself, no matter how expensive it was.
This particular ride to Muckross Abbey/Priory became even more special thanks to the typically Irish Jarvey (driver) who sang songs, told folk tales and information about his life. I hope you enjoy the video as much as we did the ride...
