Landscape Photography - Lake Myvatn Mud Pots Iceland
Landscape Photography - Photographing Iceland Ep #18. Sunrise at the Lake Myvatn Mud Pots. I think this is the closest I'll ever get to walking on the planet Mars. The landscape here is just incredible! No wonder NASA sent astronauts here to practice walking on the moon. Man, did I have fun with my drone! Please enjoy :)

L'Austral Iceland Cruise Day 5: Akureyi Tours - Lake Myvatn and Mud Pots
Off the L'Austral ship at 8:00a, a full day of touring different spots around Lake Myvatn was scheduled. Lake Myvatn is 14 square miles, has 50 islets and the shoreline is protected due to nesting birds.
There are sulphur fields at Namaskard, hot springs, geothermal fields near Namafjall Mountain with bubbling mud pots, and more. A lot to see.
Hverir, Iceland - Boiling Mud Pots
In Iceland, near Lake Myvatn lies a geothermal area called Hverir. Here you will find boiling sulphurous mud pots called solfataras and steam springs called fumaroles. The surreal landscape is lunar like. The nearby Krafla Caldera is perched on the edge of the Eurasian and Amereican tectonic plates. A must=see in Northern Iceland!!

Mud Pots in Hverir Iceland
Hverir is a geothermal area near Lake Myvatn, Iceland. Hverir is characterized by boiling mud pots and fumaroles that steam. The surreal landscape is a must-see when visiting Northern Iceland. The Krafia caldera is home of some of Iceland's most popular craters. The area smells like sulfur, and your shoes will be get quite muddy.

Iceland Mud Pits near Lake Myvatn
A few miles east of Myvatn, are Iceland's best-known boiling mud pits. They are also extraordinarily beautiful. Sulphuric acid reactions, iron oxidation and all kinds of chemical nastiness have conspired to paint the flank of Namafjall mountain a rich palette of ochres and reds, daubed with the occasional purple blotch of a suppurating mud pit.

ICELAND: Námafjall & Mývatn
Recorded September 5, 2008.
Námafjall is a high-temperature geothermal area with fumaroles and boiling mud pools. At a depth of 1000 meters the temperature is above 200 degrees C. As is characteristic for other hot spring areas
there is a hot spring smell at Námafjall which is caused by the steam and the fumarole gas, such as hydrogen sulfide.
Mývatn is a shallow eutrophic lake situated in an area of active volcanism in the north of Iceland, not far from Krafla volcano. The lake and its surrounding wetlands have an exceptionally rich fauna of waterbirds, especially ducks. The lake was created by a large basaltic lava eruption 2300 years ago, and the surrounding landscape is dominated by volcanic landforms, including lava pillars and rootless vents (pseudocraters).

The Námafjall Geothermal Area is located in Northeast Iceland, on the east side of Lake Mývatn.
At this area, also known as Hverir, you will see many smoking fumaroles and boiling mud pots, surrounded by sulphur crystals of many different colours. This sulphur gives the area an overwhelming smell of egg.
The soil in the area has little vegetation due to the acidity caused by these geothermal processes.
Around the area is a small hiking trail up to Námaskarð pass and Námafjall mountain, which returns to the highway and the parking lot.
In 1969 a geothermal power plant was built west of the Námafjall Area. The plant currently produces 3MW of geothermal energy.
Concerns have raised over current plans to expand the plant to 90 MW. In particular, there have been worries in regards to the effect of the plant on the delicate ecosystem of Lake Mývatn. The head of an environmental NGO has recently called for a new environmental impact assessment on the plans, and the matter continues to be debated

(1) Leirhnjúkur - on the way to Krafla steam out of the surface and you see the layers of new LAVA covering older layers.
(2) krafla lake This is the lake on the mountain (not the top)
(3) Hverarond - On the ring road, water are steamed out of the ground and there are mud bubbles
You can walk around but be carful not to go off the path since you can be burned.

Námafjall, Hverir, Iceland - DaneWithADrone [4k]
While driving around Road 1 on Iceland I stopped by the Námafjall, Hverir geothermal area. The area is easily accessible by car with a parking lot right next to the mud pots.
You can walk around the area and inspect the mud pots and hissing holes. But beware! You need sturdy walking shoes and be ready to sink into acidic mud. Your shoes will get ruined if you don’t take care.
The area is quite interesting, especially in the morning before all the tourists arrive in their big busses.

Namaskard pass is at the foothills of this spectacular volcanic mountain is an expanse of hot springs called Hveraröndor Hverir that are known for their changing variety. You may also find a number of fumaroles, mud pools and mud pots that all seem to be boiling with relentless energy. The pass Námaskarð is strategically located at a short distance from the Krafla volcano system as well as other interesting geological spots like Búrfellshraun and the desert Mývatsöræfi.
