A cultural group crossed over to South Korea via ferry... to put up 2 highly-anticipated performances -- one in the sub host city of Gangneung and the other in Seoul.
Ji Myung-kil has our top story.
The North Korean ferry, with the red letters Mangyongbong 92,... arrived Tuesday in South Korea at Mukho port in the city of Donghae on the east coast.
South Korean officials gave a small welcoming ceremony to the North Korean art troupe after the ferry docked.
The Mangyongbong is a 97-hundred ton cargo-passenger ferry named after a hill in Pyongyang near the birthplace of North Korea's late founder Kim Il-sung.
Seoul has temporarily lifted its ban on North Korean ships entering its waters to allow the ship to come.
The Mangyongbong 92 itself is not one of the North Korean vessels blacklisted by the United Nations or the U.S. on suspicion of involvement in Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program.
The North Korean troupe will be using the ship as lodging during the concert period in Gangneung and is also a way for the North to keep the artists from having contact with South Koreans.
The North Korean artists will perform on Thursday in the city of Gangneung on the eve of the Winter Olympics.
Gangneung is hosting Olympic events including women's ice hockey in which the two Koreas will compete as a joint team... a first in Olympic history.
The troupe will perform again on Sunday at the National Theater of Korea in Seoul.
More North Koreans will be arriving in the South Wednesday morning via the western land route.
The 2-hundred-eighty member delegation consists of four officials from the North's national Olympic committee, 229 cheerleaders, 26 taekwondo demonstrators and 21 journalists.

A North Korean group of artists has left North Korea this morning on board a ferry and has now entered South Korean waters.
They will be performing at highly-anticipated cultural events during the Pyeongchang Winter Games -- one in the sub host city of Gangneung and the other in Seoul.
Here's our Ji Myung-kil with the latest.
The North Korean art troupe comprising 140 orchestra musicians, dancers and singers will arrive in South Korea Tuesday afternoon on board a ferry called the Mangyongbong.
The ship will arrive in South Korea at Mukho port in the city of Donghae on the east coast.
The North Koreans are coming to South Korea onboard the ferry Mangyongbong 92. They will be using it not only as a means of transportation but also as accommodation during the concert period in Gangneung.
Using the ship as lodging for them... is also a way for the North to keep the artists from having contact with South Koreans.

South Korea: North Korean Olympic ferry arrives in South Korea
A North Korean ferry arrived in the South Korean port of Donghae on Tuesday, carrying a group of North Korean musicians and their entourage for performances ahead of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
The Mangyongbong-92 ship was carrying the Samjiyon art troupe, which includes a 140-piece orchestra, as it arrived at Donghae’s Mukho port.
The ship’s arrival was enabled by Seoul temporarily lifting a ban on North Korean ships, in a move geared towards the hosting of the Olympics.
Protesters gathered at the port to rally against the ship’s arrival.
Seoul prohibited all North Korean ships from entering its ports and halted most inter-Korean exchanges in 2010, after an attack on a South Korean navy warship, which killed 46 sailors. North Korea denied all involvement in the incident.

Hi guys! In this video, we visit Mukho Port and have some fresh snow crab. The crabs were purchased live from a local seafood vendor. These were probably the freshest and tastiest crabs I have ever eaten. It is nothing like eating previously frozen crab. The meat is so soft and tender. Also, you can watch our server cut crab like a boss in this video.
Mukho Port, located in Donghae, Gangwon Province, opened in 1941 and used to be an important trading port on the East Coast of Korea. It is now an important fishing hub. At Mukho Port, you will find a wholesale seafood market at the port with a wide variety of seafood. From early in the morning on weekends, merchants across the country gather at the market to purchase fresh seafood.

And to open up the waterways and dock a North Korean ship south of the border,... the South Korean government had to temporarily lift some sanctions on the regime.
Seoul may even go a step further, providing food to the people on the ferry and keeping the vessel topped up with oil and a steady supply of electricity.
Oh Jung-hee reports.
The South Korean government says it might provide some essential support -- like food, fuel and electricity -- to the North Korean ferry while it's docked at Mukho.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, a unification ministry official said... Seoul will follow the precedent of what it did during the 2002 Asian Games in Busan.
That's when the same ferry, Mangyongbong 92, made its way to South Korea with cheerleaders onboard.
Experts say this would not violate international sanctions -- as long as the food isn't from America... and the fuel is reported beforehand to the UN Security Council.
The UN sanctions resolution bans the provision of fuel, but we know that this is for the convenience of the artists and others onboard the ferry. So it would be hard to call this a violation.
There has already been controversy over whether the Mangyongbong 92's entry into the South Korean port violates Seoul's own unilateral sanctions -- the May 24th Measure.
Adopted in 2010 after a North Korean submarine torpedoed and sank the South Korean warship Cheonan,... the measure banned North Korean ships from entering South Korean waters.
Seoul decided to make an exception for the Mangyongbong 92,... implying that it does not plan on lifting the sanctions.
But experts think Pyongyang did have a reason, to some extent, for choosing a ferry this time.
Maybe the North Korean government wants to see how the South Korean government would respond if they were to change the method of transportation to the Mangyongbong-ho. They believe that the South Korean government wouldn't oppose that even if North Korea changes its method of transportation because they know that South Korean government wanted to continue dialogue with North Korea.
South Korea's unification ministry explained that North Korea has not asked for material support... and that nothing has been decided.
It added that Seoul will closely cooperate with the international community to prevent any friction over perceived sanction violations.
