On the most southerly coastal head of County Antrim, Brent Geese migrate from Strangford Lough in County Down to grassy feeding grounds along the Antrim Coast. they will remain here until the Spring when they will return to Canada - a journey od 3000 miles via Iceland. By any migratory bird standards, this is a grueling and dangerous change of feeding grounds. 90% of the World's population of Light Bellied species arrive at Strangford Lough in the Autumn each year. They travel in small groups - as you can see in this footage which shows between two and ten travelling together. They like to fly within inches of the sea's surface and hug the coastline where possible. In this HD video you get a really good demonstration of this as the dark feathered geese are brilliantly silhouetted by a turquoise, calm Irish Sea fronted by volcanic rock formations. Right now, in late October '17, there are between five and six thousand of the 'Light Bellied' variety feeding here in N Ireland and around 40,000 of the species group in total around Ireland. Brent Geese are about the size of a Mallard Duck - which you can see in our video of Cushendun village harbour on this channel. If you look closely you can see a couple of seals surface at the start of this video to see what's happening on the shore.
