The Atlantic Drive - Rosguill Peninsula - Co Donegal
The Atlantic Drive is a spectacular road around the Rosguill Peninsula in North Donegal. A classic example of the rugged Donegal coastline the Rosguill Peninsula is situated between Fanad Peninsula to the east and Horn Head to the west - all three peninsulas facing into the mighty Atlantic Ocean.
The Atlantic Drive itself is approximately 12km long. You will appreciate the scenery even more if you walk or cycle this relatively short route. The walk can be completed in just over half a day.
Starting at Downings village on the western side of the Rosguill Peninsula you head northwards along the coastline of Sheepaven Bay. As you travel the winding road there are magnificent views across Sheephaven Bay towards Muckish Mountain and Horn Head. The road then takes you high above the renowned Tra na Rossan Bay, with its beautiful beach forming a golden link between two headlands.
Leaving Tra na Rossan the road sweeps north towards Melmore Head - the most northernly point of the peninsuala. This rugged headland juts out into the Atlantic ocean and commands views across towards the Fanad Peninsula. The beach at Melmore is one of finest on the peninsula.
Then the road winds south along Mulroy Bay with its many inlets and islands and beaches and the views continue to enrapture and enchant. At a picnic spot half way along this return route the dramatic Mulroy Bridge comes into view. Heading back towards Downings Meevagh church graveyard is signposted left where there is an old Latin cross and an ogham stone next to the ruins of an ancient church. As you return to the road there is a renowned traditional pub on your right - the Singing Pub. As you complete the Atlantic Drive you will enjoy sweeping views over Downings Beach and harbour and Rosapenna Golf Links towards Sheepaven Bay and Muckish Mountain.
