Borneo | Bats, Caves & Skywalks at Mulu National Park | Malaysia Luxury Travel Blog
I'm on a mission to explore as much of Malaysia while I'm living here as possible and Borneo was high on my list! Come with me on day one of my amazing adventure at Gunung Mulu National Park, a highlight of all my travels in 2016. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with amazing experiences in the Sarawak rain forest. I walked on a half kilometre canopy skywalk and was in the deer and lang caves, which boast over 2 MILLION bats! In fact, I saw thousands of bats, walked for hours in some of the prettiest forest I've seen in my life, and had a blast that day.
The canopy skywalk experience was a group guided tour through Mulu Park, which was very fun. Then I booked a private VIP tour though the (OMG so fabulous!!) Mulu Marriott where I was staying with their top guide Steve Duloi and we had a blast. Thanks to Sarawak Tourism Board for helping me to plan this trip, it was perfect!!

Canopy Walk at Mulu National Park, Malaysia
2 March 2017 - One of the highlights of Mulu National Park is to go on the Canopy Skywalk, a series of interconnected bridges 480 metres long, suspended 20 metres high between trees deep in the rainforest. This is one of the most popular activities in the park, and for good reason!
It was quite an experience to walk on these bridges - they are built well, but do shake from side to side and it's recommended that only one person go on it at a time. Most rainforest activity actually occurs at the canopy, as opposed to ground level, but unfortunately I did not see much wildlife. Still, to constantly hear the insects and birds in the rainforest was a unique experience I'll remember, and it was great to get a different view of the rainforest after exploring it from the ground for the past four days before!

Mulu National Park, Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo
Mulu National Park, Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo
Gunung Mulu National Park, situated in the Malaysian State of Sarawak on the island of Borneo, is outstanding both for its high biodiversity and for its karst features. The geological Melinau Formation contains a remarkable concentration of caves, revealing a geological history of over more than 1.5 million years.
High in endemism, Gunung Mulu National Park provides significant natural habitat for a wide range of plant and animal species, both above and below ground. Providing protection for a substantial area of Borneo’s primary tropical forest and a home for a high diversity of species, including many endemics and threatened species, the large cave passages and chambers provide a major wildlife spectacle in terms of millions of cave swiftlets and bats.
The deeply-incised canyons, wild rivers, rainforest-covered mountains, spectacular limestone pinnacles, cave passages and decorations found within the property produce dramatic landscapes and breathtaking scenery.

Gunung Mulu National Park is an UNESCO world heritage area, deep inside Borneo jungle, it's only reachable by small aircraft and it's so far the most wonderful forest I have ever seen. No comments needed to discribe Tioman Island, literally paradise on earth.

Gunung Mulu National Park near Miri, Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that encompasses incredible caves and karst formations in a mountainous equatorial rainforest setting. The park is famous for its caves and the expeditions that have been mounted to explore them and their surrounding rainforest, most notably the Royal Geographical Society Expedition of 1977 - 1978, which saw over 100 scientists in the field for 15 months.
The national park is named after Mount Mulu, the second highest mountain in Sarawak.
Eight species of hornbill have been spotted in Mulu including the Rhinoceros Hornbill Buceros rhinoceros which features on Sarawak state emblem, the White-crowned Hornbill Berenicornis/Aceros comatus and the Helmeted Hornbill Buceros vigil with its large solid casque (bill).
Twenty seven species of bat have been recorded in Mulu. Deer Cave in the southern limestone hills of the park is home to an enormous colony of Wrinkle-lipped bats Tadarida plicata. The bats exit the cave almost every evening in search of food in a spectacular exodus. A huge mound of guano in the cave is evidence of the size of the bat colony that roosts in the cave's high ceilings.
Mulu's mammals also include the Bearded pig Sus barbatus, the moonrat Echinosorex gymnurus, shrews, the Bornean Tarsier Tarsius bancanus, the long-tailed Macaque Macaca fascicularis, gibbons, squirrels, and three types of deer including the small barking deer and mouse deer. The small Malaysian sun bear Helarctos malayanus, which is the only bear known in South-East Asia, has also been identified in Gunung Mulu National Park.
Gunung Mulu National Park contains a large number of plant species, including flowering plants, trees, and fungi. Geology, soil types and topography have given rise to a rich tapestry of plant zones and types. On Gunung Mulu itself these include lowland mixed dipterocarp forest, lower montane forest, mossy or upper montane forest and summit zone vegetation on the highest peaks. On the limestones there is lowland limestone forest, lower and upper montane limestone forest. Other plant communities dominate the alluvial plains, including kerangas (tropical heath forest) and peatswamp forest.
