Places to see in ( Baden Baden - Germany ) Mummelsee
The Mummelsee is a 17-metre-deep lake at the western mountainside of the Hornisgrinde in the Northern Black Forest of Germany. It is very popular with tourists travelling along the Schwarzwaldhochstraße. According to legends, the lake is inhabited by a Nix and the King of the Mummelsee.
According to legend, when you see the Mummelsee lake at an altitude of 1,036 metres in the daylight, you’d never suspect what actually goes on here at night under the light of the full moon. Whilst during the day pedalos peacefully skim the surface of the water and visitors stroll through the attractive landscape, the famous Mummelsee King and his mermaids come out to play in the moonlight at night.
‘Black shadows on the surface of the water. Its shores resemble the banks of the Lethe, desolate and isolated … not a sound disturbs the eternal silence, save for the melancholy gurgle of the spring deep down in the valley. The black surface of the water never stirs; on it the yellow water lily opens its wide petals. Here dwells contemplation, melancholy and poetry.’
That’s how Alois Schreiber, one of the first hikers to explore the Black Forest, described Mummelsee 165 years ago. And the lake must have been so desolate and isolated for quite some time after it first came into being during the last ice age 10,000 years ago, when the glacier ice carved out the circular basin. Mummelsee owes its name to the white water lily, called ‘Mummeln’ in the local dialect, which was once widespread here. You can still experience the eternal silence in the evening, in the night and in the morning. The rest of the time, lots of people flock to the lake. Berghotel Mummelsee was built on the shores of Mummelsee a hundred years ago and, up until just after World War I, could only be accessed by foot. With the construction of the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse in 1930, the famous lake with its cosy mountain hotel developed into one of the Black Forest’s most popular tourist destinations.
Today, a visit to Mummelsee offers a whole host of experiences and attractions. In addition to enjoying the scenic attractions and stunning, idyllic landscape surrounding the lake, you can also hire pedalos, marvel at works of art by modern artists along an art trail, or take a short hike to the nearby Hornisgrinde summit. An accessible path round the lake also offers people with limited mobility and families with pushchairs the opportunity to go for a stroll. Along the way, you’ll come across the beautiful mermaid in bronze and her song of love.

Baden-Baden, a Spa Town at the Edge of the Black Forest in Germany
Baden-Baden, meaning the Baths in Baden, is a spa town built on thermal springs at the edge of the Black Forest in Baden-Württemberg, south west Germany.
The springs of Baden-Baden have been known for more than 2,000 years, and their composition resembles that of the Roman baths of the 3rd century. The water at the baths of Caracalla-Therme spa is rich in sodium chloride, and comes from artesian wells 1,800 metres under the Florentiner Mountain.
The city offers many options for sports enthusiasts. Golf and tennis are both popular in the area. The countryside is ideal for hiking and mountain climbing. In the winter Baden-Baden is a skiing destination.
The popularity of the city as a spa dates from the early 19th century, when the Prussian queen visited the site to improve her health. During the 19th century, the town rose to become a meeting place for celebrities, who were attracted by the hot springs as well as by the famous Baden-Baden Casino, the luxury hotels, the horse races, and the gardens of the Lichtentaler Allee. Clients included Queen Victoria, Wilhelm I, Napoleon III, Berlioz, Brahms, Turgenev, and Dostoyevsky.
Badens's Spielbank casino is more than 200 years old and the oldest of its type in Germany. Dostoyevsky is said to have written The Gambler after he lost his money and even his shirt here. The rooms were designed in the style of a French château.
Don't be put off by its reputation as a hang-out for the rich. This picturesque town is beautifully situated in a wooded valley, and you can enjoy yourself here without spending or gambling a fortune.

Places to see in ( Baden Baden - Germany ) Burg Hohenbaden
Places to see in ( Baden Baden - Germany ) Burg Hohenbaden
The castle Hohenbaden (when founding Hohenbaden Castle , today Altes Schloss ) in Baden-Baden was the seat of the Margrave of Baden in the Middle Ages . They named themselves after the castle, which became the namesake of the country Baden .
The castle was built as the first center of power of the Margraves of Limburg after the relocation of their rule to the Upper Rhine on the western slope of the rocky mountain Battert above the then called Baden place. The construction of the upper castle, the so-called Hermannsbau, by margrave Hermann II (1074-1130) is around 1100 adopted. From 1112 the Margraves of Baden called themselves .
Under Margrave Bernhard I of Baden (1372-1431) was the Gothic lower castle, which was extended by Margrave James I (1431-1453) to the prestigious center of margraviate. Its most important component is the Bernhardsbau (around 1400), whose pillar on the ground floor used to support the mighty vault with a coat of arms worn by angels. In its heyday, the castle had 100 rooms. In the same century, Margrave Christoph I extended the New Castle in Baden, which was begun in 1370, and relocated the residence there in 1479. The Old Castle then served as a widow's residence , in 1599 it was destroyed by fire. Only after 1830 was the ruin structurally secured.
The Old Castle was cared for years as a state-owned monument of the institution State Castles and Gardens Baden-Württemberg . In 2017 it was sold to Wolfgang Scheidtweiler . From its tower you have a good panoramic view of Baden-Baden and distant views of the Rhine valley and the Vosges . Worth seeing is also the castle courtyard of the ruin. The tour of the castle and tower is free. In the castle there is a restaurant.
The castle is a popular starting point for hikes on the Battert with its scenic, protected nature climbing rocks and a spellbind. A large wind harp stands in the ruins of the Knights' Hall of the Old Palace. Built in 1999, the harp has a total height of 4.10 meters and 120 strings and was designed and built by regional resident musician and harp maker Rüdiger Oppermann , who described it as Europe's largest wind harp . The nylon strings are stimulated by the draft to the basic tones C and G. Already from 1851 to 1920 there was a small wind harp in the Knight's Hall of the Old Palace.

Our ride along the Danube and beyond: Baden Württemberg (Mummelsee, Baden Baden and Fautenach)
We couldn’t come to the Black Forest and not have Black Forest cake. So when Franz & Martha told us that they knew of a place that served great cake and coffee we had to go and try it. Only thing they forgot to mention was that we had to cycle up Hornisgrinde to get there.
While in Baden Württemberg we also went to Baden Baden and enjoyed the local sites around Fautenach. We had a wonderful time and the hospitality of Thomas’ family was really appreciated. Thank you we had a magnificent time.

In September 2014, eight friends packed their bikes and flew from Western Australia to Europe to ride along the Danube to its source in Donaueschingen, Germany. The route we followed was along the Euro Velo Route 6 (EV6).
Being from down under we did things a little different as we rode towards the origin of the river rather than the recommended way which is downstream. We also did the track on road bikes which didn't seem to be the norm.
On 9 September 2014 we left Budapest, Hungary; and this set of videos may give you a small insight into our incredible trip to the Black Forest, Germany - arriving on 22 September 2014.
Hopefully you will gain a small glimpse of the beauty and diversity that we observed along this magnificent river. The videos show a small snapshot of the daily routine commencing with continental breakfast, preparing bikes for the day’s journey, determining the ever changing and at times elusive route. Along the way we cycled on gravel, cobbles, asphalt, dirt roads and tracks through forests, villages, major cities, in sunshine, fog and rain. The pictures and videos also show some the morning teas, lunch and the enchanting local Gasthoffs where the group met for evening meals after hurried showers and washing duties. They also show the laughter, the comradery and our determination to complete the ride in a limited time-frame.
We would like to thank the locals we met along the way as they made our trip memorable — we loved each country we visited and its different culinary preferences, language’s, road rules, currencies and customs.
