Shire of Mundaring
Nestled in the heart of the Perth Hills, 40 minutes east of Perth, is Mundaring. Transport yourself from the hustle and bustle of the city to a place where you can be totally immersed in nature.
One third of the Shire is classified as State Forest with a bountiful selection of trails to enjoy including six of the State's Top Trails. The Railway Reserves Heritage Trail stretches 59kms through the Shire linking the charming settlements that evolved alongside the old railway line. Bibbulmun Track passes through Mundaring on its way to Albany in the south-west and the Munda Biddi off-road cycle trail head is located in Mundaring Community Sculpture Park, making Mundaring an ideal starting point to enjoy some of the region's stunning scenery.
A visit to Mundaring Weir and the museum at No.1 Pump Station is a must. Although the project was completed more than 100 years ago it remains one of the longest freshwater pipelines in the world and a starting point for the Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail and Kep Track.
Other attractions to discover include first-class restaurants, cafes and boutique wineries, a famous pizzeria, open-air markets, art galleries, outdoor concerts and heritage-listed hotels, inns and taverns oozing with country charm. Idyllic picnic spots at Lake Leschenaultia, John Forrest and Beelu National Parks, plus many nature-based activities can complete your Hills experience. There's also a range of accommodation on offer, whether it's a romantic luxury hideaway or a quiet camping spot that appeals.
Mundaring Visitor Centre is located in The Old School in the heart of Mundaring and the best starting point to explore the region.

More theatres were to follow, such as Cinema City and the Cine Centre. Hoyts also ran a number of small cinemas known as Hoyts Cinemas 1, 2 and 3.
Sadly, none of these venues, except His Majesty's (a live theatre), are operating today, with very little left to show that they existed.
This video covers the early venues used to show silent movies in Perth.
The switchover from silent to sound in the American film industry, which began in late 1927, was primarily complete by 1929 (though even in that year silent pictures continued to be produced, though at a heavily reduced rate).
In all, the silent film era lasted from 1895 to 1936. With Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times being made in 1936.
Sadly, a September 2013 report by the United States Library of Congress announced that a total of 70% of American silent feature films are believed to be completely lost.
This video was compiled by the WA TV History team for showing at a Australian Museum of Motion Picture and Television (AMMPT) meeting. Narration by AMMPT's Keith Rutherford.
PART 1 OF 4 MUNDARING WEIR CYCLE PATH B JAN 2007
Mundaring Weir is the name of a dam (and historically the adjoining locality) which are located 39 km from Perth, Western Australia in the Darling Scarp. It is currently located in the Mundaring locality. The dam crosses the Helena River. The town of Mundaring was gazetted in 1898, the same year as the commencement of construction of the dam. A soldier, Ensign Robert Dale, became the first European to explore the region in 1829. European populations did not grow significantly until construction of the dam in the late 1890s. This involved the building of a railway line from Mundaring to the Mundaring Weir site. The Irish Australian engineer C. Y. O'Connor was involved the design of a scheme that transported water to the Eastern Goldfields of Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie in the eastern part of Western Australia. Work commenced to raise the dam in the late 1940s, which was completed in November 1951. In the early 1970s the downstream dam from the weir — the 'pipehead dam' was constructed. Mundaring Weir was the terminus of the Mundaring Weir Branch Railway, which was originally constructed by the Public Works Department of WA for the transport of materials for the construction of the dam. It was not only after the completion of the weir that the location became popular with picnickers and sightseers, the project caught the imagination of the public in Perth. The landscaped grounds of the weir, and the lower zig-zag section of the end of the railway line (which can still be seen when the capacity of the dams falls below approximately 35%) feature prominently in post cards of numerous weekend and special picnic excursion trains that travelled to the weir until the late 1940s. The steepness of the Mundaring weir railway line restricted the capacity of the railways to conduct the picnic trains, as the Msa Garratt steam engines were the most suitable, but in short supply, at times when the weir was overflowing in the 1940s. The railway line was closed in 1952.
AMMPT - Perth Heritage Days 2016
On October 15th and 16th of 2016, The Australian Museum of Moving Picture and Television, Western Region, will present a program of films and videos from its collection, which illustrates aspects of Perth's cultural heritage.
The venue will be the Centre for Stories, at 100 Aberdeen Street, Northbridge in Perth.
There will be rare vintage film which covers parts of the Western Australian Government's immigration, informational, educational and tourism strategies.
It will also show how Perth appeared in earlier years, the people and the places, that younger generations will not recognise, for Perth has largely been rebuilt since the colonial and early federation days.
Television documentaries, were also kindly supplied by Channel Seven.
In 1963, Seven Perth made a musical documentary, that covered 400 years of dance.
Relive the era of the big dance studios in Perth. Channel Seven’s “Invitation to The Dance” was produced and directed by Brian Williams, with Sam Gilkison as the associate producer.
This 1963, one-off special, involved the Perth dance studios and dance community at that time. The prominent ballroom dance academies were the Gilkison and the Wrightson dance studios.
This program marked a point in TVW's history, with the opening of Studio 1 in 1963, and was the first program made in that studio. The show utilised a vast number of dancers who dressed in period costumes.
Another Seven program being screened is the 1992 colour documentary of Susannah Carr in the Genevieve 500 - a history making road race from Perth to Albany. The car was the twin-cylinder 10/12 hp Darracq built in Paris in 1904, that was made famous in the 1953 British comedy film, named Genevieve, starring Kenneth More and Kay Kendall.
This but a small glimpse of what will be showing, over the 15th and 16th of October weekend, at the Centre for Stories, 100 Aberdeen Street, Northbridge. This event is totally free and includes a photographic display showing Perth's wonderful theatres of yesteryear. We'll be looking forward to seeing you there.

Perth Travel Guide - Australia Charming Memories
Perth Travel Guide - Australia Charming Memories
Perth is the capital city of Western Australia. Perth sprawls along a flat coastal plain, centred along the Swan River and bounded by the Darling Scarp to the east and the Indian Ocean coastline in the west. Despite its isolation and relatively small population, Perth is a surprisingly culturally diverse city. Due to the high rate of migration to Perth, slightly less than half of Perth's residents were born outside Australia. Its proximity to Southeast Asia and Africa has led to an influx of migrants from countries such as Malaysia, South Africa and Thailand, and this is reflected in the diversity of cuisine available in Perth. If you wish to experience a cosmopolitan culture without the hustle and bustle of larger cities then Perth is worth visiting.
The City has a temperate Mediterranean type climate. Summers are hot and dry whilst winters are generally wet and mild. Summer temperatures average 30°C/86°F between November and April. Maximum temperatures during the height of summer can reach and sometimes exceed the 40°C/104°F mark. Very hot days tend to have very low humidity making conditions more bearable.
The Perth metropolitan area has a fairly reliable and inexpensive public transport system operated by Transperth. Information about timetables, fares, disruptions or service alterations can be found on their website. The frequency of public transport decreases remarkably on weekends, and on weekdays in the evenings after 7 or 8pm. Always plan your journey before you travel. Travelling to the tourist attractions within Perth, Fremantle, Cottesloe, Scarborough is easy by public transport, but outside of that a car is significantly better.
The central business district of Perth is bounded by the Swan River to the south and east, with Kings Park on the western end, while the railway reserve formed a northern border. A state and federally funded project named Perth City Link sunk a section of the railway line, to allow easy pedestrian access between Northbridge and the CBD. The Perth Arena is a building in the city link area that has received several architecture awards from various institutions such as the Design Institute of Australia, the Australian Institute of Architecture, and Colorbond. St Georges Terrace is the prominent street of the area with 1.3 million m2 of office space in the CBD. Hay Street and Murray Street have most of the retail and entertainment facilities. The tallest building in the city is Central Park, which is the eighth tallest building in Australia. The CBD until 2012 was the centre of a mining-induced boom, with several commercial and residential projects being built, including Brookfield Place, a 244 m office building for Anglo-Australian mining company BHP Billiton.

Shaping Perth - Ivan King OAM
From the Shaping Perth : Stories of Our City exhibition @ Museum of Perth
Ivan King OAM
Born in Midland “beneath the shadow of the Town Hall clock”, Ivan is a veteran of over a hundred plays, revues, musicals and operettas, as well as countless other theatrical events. After major tours of the Eastern States and New Zealand he spent 18 months in children’s theatre programmes before going abroad to work in small repertory companies in regional England. Returning to Perth, he then enjoyed a long run of 13 theatre-restaurant revues in the old Civic Theatre in Inglewood. In the following decades he played a wide range of roles at the Playhouse, the Regal Theatre, the Hayman Theatre, His Majesty’s Theatre and The Hole In The Wall. He wrote skits for revues, entertainment features for Music Maker magazine and social columns for an inner suburban newspaper. As the founder of the Museum of Performing Arts housed Downstairs at the Maj he has further created, to date, 54 exhibitions highlighting the history of entertainment in Perth. In 2009 he was given the Premier’s Award for Active Citizenship and in 2016 he received a Medal of the Order of Australia for service to the performing arts as an historian and archivist. In his film Ivan describes his role in ‘the profession’, with an emphasis on the 1970s.

RECENT HISTORY
Towards the end of 1942 authority had been given to relocate the Fort Arthur Head guns to Leighton where their prime task of Examination Battery could be fulfilled more satisfactorily. The guns were then emplaced on temporary mountings as it was already planned to equip the site with more modem weapons as soon as they became available from the United Kingdom. In the meantime over 300 metres of tunnels were excavated in places up to 10 metres below ground in which magazines for the storage of ammunition, communications, gun crew rest areas and observation posts were constructed. The Battery Commander was a mining engineer who used his knowledge to develop the complex.
The battery, which became known as the Leighton 6 inch Battery, was commissioned in February 1943. Barracks for the personnel, two coast defence searchlights and other associated facilities were built to serve the battery. Prior to the 6-inch battery moving to Buckland Hill, a 3.7-inch anti aircraft battery had been deployed near what is today the main entrance to the residential estate.
The tenders for the construction of the A/A site were let in August of 1941 and the gun station was then commissioned about two weeks after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. In 1944 work commenced on the replacement battery for the Leighton 6-inch Battery. It comprised three 5.25-inch dual-purpose Coast Artillery/ AntiAircraft guns. This battery was known as 802 Battery and was sufficiently advanced by March 1945 for the 6-inch guns to be removed and transferred to the Princess Royal Battery at Albany.

On the 31st of December 2017, we set out on a small adventure. Our goal was to find an activity to finish the best year ever (2017) while also being an epic start to 2018. The plan was to spend two days Mountain Biking around Mundaring, explore the area and camp overnight nearby. Here is our adventure in 60 seconds.
Located less than 45 mins from Perth CBD is Mundaring Weir is situated in the Beelu National Park. Apart from supplying the Goldfields with much of its drinking water it is the start of the Biberman Trail and has over 1000 km of MTB trails. These are maintained by the wonderful Kalamunda MTB Collective. The area has many historical sites and some of the most stunning scenery in Australia. Everyone we met was warm and friendly, it was a truly an amazing adventure. A great way to start 2018!
