Big Red - Simpson Desert

The famous sand dune 50 km from Birdsville. Respected local Don Rowlands tells me the Simpson will soon be renamed to Munga-Thirri in recognition of the traditional owners.

Simpson Desert Expedition

Ancient indigenous artefacts, relics of early explorers and mummified remains, were all discovered on this exciting scientific and ecological survey with Australian Desert Expeditions into the iconic Simpson Desert in 2019. Travelling by foot and with pack camels in the tradition of the early explorers meant that the Australian Outback and its rich biodiversity was lived and experienced in the closest possible way. I went on the trek to support remote communities, and made this short film in memory of 'Sultan' the best anchor camel that Andrew Harper OAM has ever seen.
