I always wanted to Snowboard, but back in South Africa we dont have much snow. So I took the first chance I could get during my 2011 teip to Morocco. This is taken right on top of the Atlas mountains.
Its a humble beginning, but it was my very first time on a snowboard, and thankfully I didnt fall off.

OUTERNATIONAL MELTDOWN 1994 Nobody comes to South Africa without a mission
Brazilian percussionist, Airto Moreira, was playing his first ever gig in Africa with Flora Purim, guitarist José Neto and their band, Fourth World. After the show, Airto and Robert visited the bar to be greeted by the owner with wise and prophetic words: 'Nobody comes to South Africa without a mission'.
That night, Robert and Airto met the legendary bass player and founder of Sakhile, Sipho Gumede. The encounter, and others with such extraordinary musicians as Pops Mohamed, persuaded the pair that they had to return to South Africa. Gradually, it became clear that their mission was to offer their new musical friends an opportunity for a free exchange of culture and musical ideas; to facilitate the creative collaboration that had been denied to them throughout the cultural boycott. In October '94, this process began with a group of artists travelling to South Africa meeting up and jam with more than 50 local musicians under the banner, 'Outernational Meltdown'. The producer team for the series of recordings in Joburg and Cape Town included Airto, Jose Neto, Byron Wallen, Jose Neto, Andrew Missingham, Pops Mohamed and Sipho Gumede. Particpating artist a.o. were Moses Taiwa Molelekwa, Madala Kunene, Mabi thoejane, Shaluza Max, spiritual healers, gospel choirs, Amampondo and Dave Mayekana.
For Robert Trunz this adventure was a step into the unknown - with the help of Airto's creative direction he started to take a more global approach to the label's repertoire. This grew from Robert's view that a mixture of different cultural and ethnic styles both informs and enhances playing styles and works particularly effectively in a jazz-infused world music context. It was his firm belief that, as a purveyor of loudspeakers, which are only animated - given life and soul - by the music played through them, he must pay his dues to those who create the (soul) music.
M.E.L.T. 2000 releases a carefully selected choice of World Music-, Jazz- and Acoustic recordings of artists from the UK, Brazil, Cuba but mainly from Southern Africa. The site features well known names like Byron Wallen, Airto Moreira, Flora Purim, Fourth World, Madala Kunene, Bernard Mndaweni, Amampondo, Busi Mhlongo and Mabi Thobejane. Recent recordings and filming of new and exciting artists include L.A.P. (Live African Percussion), Castro B., Vivid Afrika, Greg Georgiades, Ashish Joshi, Della Tamin, Thabang Tabane, Syd Kitchen, Johnny Fourie, Carlo Mombelli, Ernest Mothle & Ntombe Thongo's African Band. ELECTRIC M.E.L.T. is undertaking several new projects in conjunction with local South African- and European remixers to be released under the Music With No Name series.

The Fake Mountains of Africa
Did you know for almost 100 years a mountain range in Africa showed on world maps but didn’t exist. On this episode we unveil the mystery of the fake mountains of Africa.
Back in the 15 and 1600’s Europeans made quick work of mapping out the continent of Africa but what was inside remained a mystery for decades. Tribes native to this land prevented many of the explorers from venturing too deep into the continent halting the completion of their maps. This map from 1839 shows an area of western africa that was mapped out and controlled by european settlers. The French and British control over Upper Guinea, Senegambia and Gambia was ever changing but this set of peaks called the Mountains of Kong didn’t exist.
Around 1798 an explorer by the name of Mungo Park, this guy with the stylish hair, set off on an expedition to explore Africa’s interior. What came from this trip with help from English cartographer James Rennell was a map that showed the Mountains of Kong. Now there are some foothills in the region Mungo Park was exploring but it’s uncertain why it was mapped all the way across the continent. In Rennel’s map it shows the Niger river stopping at the Mountains of Kong vs flowing all the way to the ocean. A map released in 1805 had the Mountains of Kong fully illustrated along with the also fictional Mountains of the Moon which connect to Kong on the East side of Africa.
A merchant named Diogenes searching for the source of the Nile claimed to have found it, being a group of large mountains with snow capped peaks that people native to to the region called the Mountains of the Moon. He said beneath the snowy mountains were 2 great lakes which today we can assume he was talking about Lake Victoria and Lake Malawi. The mountain range he called the Mountains of the Moon appears to be the mountains along the border of Uganda and the Congo.
In 1887 Louis Gustave Binger had established that the Mountains of Kong and the Moon were both fictitious as his 2 year expedition to chart the Niger River revealed no such mountains.
Most cartographers removed the make belief mountains from their maps but both Kong and Moon showed up in Bartholomew's Oxford Advanced Atlas in 1928 and believe it or not in Goode’s World Atlas in 1995.

Cape Mongo Trailer (2015) by Francois Knoetze
Mongo n. slang. object thrown away and then recovered
Cape Mongo follows the stories of five characters as they journey through the city of Cape Town. Each Mongo character is made from the city’s discarded waste – mythical ‘trash creatures’ which have emerged from the growing dumps of consumer culture. In five short films, the creatures revisit the spaces of their imagined pasts – the locations associated with their material existence and the constitution of their social relations – as if walking against the consumer-driven currents of city. From postmodern shopping malls to the bustling streets of the Bo Kaap to leafy suburbia and desolate shipping-container yards, these characters’ journeys conjure up imagery that touches on some of the historical trajectories that have lead up to the endemic inequality and social alienation which characterises present day Cape Town.
Artist Francois Knoetze has constructed five wearable sculptures entirely out of waste. Rather than merely disposable items which are purged from our lives as soon as the garbage truck disappears around the bend or which lie dormant in an ever-widening layer in the crust of the earth for future archaeologists to marvel at; Cape Mongo imagines trash objects – specifically, the packaging of domestic consumables and the electronic devices used to record every-day life – as mnemonic vestiges of the activities that shaped them. Performing all over the city of Cape Town for a period of two years, Cape Mongo is the documentation of these performances but also pulls together found footage relating to various issues around housing, food security, inequality and racial segregation.
