The Mungo National Park is a protected national park that is located in south-western New South Wales, in eastern Australia. The 110,967-hectare national park is situated approximately 875 kilometres west of Sydney in the Balranald Shire. Mungo National Park is the traditional meeting place of the Muthi Muthi, Nyiampaar and Barkinji Aboriginal Nations. People are no longer able to climb the sand dunes as stricter rules have been enforced. The national park is part of the UNESCO World Heritage–listed Willandra Lakes Region, an area of 2,400 square kilometres that incorporates seventeen dry lakes. The seventeen dry lakes are not all called Mungo but are all declared world heritage. The creek that used to flow into Mungo is being preserved as a sacred site. The national park is about 75 kilometres south-east of Pooncarie, 110 kilometres north-east of Mildura, Victoria and approximately 145 kilometres south-west of Ivanhoe. The roads to, in or around the park are unsealed and may become impassable in 2-wheel-drive cars but with care can be navigated in SUVs or 4x4s.

Balranald/Mungo National Park

Mungo National Park, New South Wales

Forty years ago the remains of a man were found at Lake Mungo in NSW. This discovery would forever change our understanding of the Aboriginal history of Australia.

In geological layers dated as far back as 50,000 years, there are stone tools and hearths, shellfish middens and butchered animal bones.

The bones of both Mungo Lady and Mungo Man, as well as the fragmentary remains of as many as 100 other people found at Willandra, made their way into ANU collections in Canberra during the 1970s and ’80s. The NSW State Government purchased Mungo station and turned it into a national park in 1979 (funds from Australian Geographic’s founder Dick Smith helped establish the visitors centre, which includes a small museum). Gazetting of the larger WHA followed in 1981.

THE WILLANDRA LAKES Region World Heritage Area covers 2400sq.km of semi-arid saltbush plains, dunes and sparse woodlands in the Murray Basin of south-western NSW. It consists of 19 dry relict lakes (see map, overleaf) that were once filled with glacial meltwater flowing east along the Willandra Creek from the Great Dividing Range.

These Pleistocene-era lakes, which were full from about 50,000 years ago, vary in size from 6 to 350sq.km; all have crescent-moon-shaped dunes called lunettes on their eastern sides, formed by prevailing winds. Mungo NP itself covers about 70 per cent of Lake Mungo, including the striking Walls of China, which are part of the lake’s 26km-long lunette.

“Some of the very earliest modern human remains in the world are here at Mungo,” says Harvey Johnston, a NSW Office of Environment and Heritage archaeologist, who’s been involved with Willandra since the late 1980s. “You have this record of human occupation going back 40,000 years and burials and ceremonies associated with that: cremations, burials with ochre, multiple individuals and burials with unusual features.” SUBSCRIBE: The official channel of Australian Geographic magazine.

Balranald to Mungo National Park

Here is a very shortened version of my journey between Balranald and Mungo National Park in Outback NSW using Burke Wills Rd and Box Creek Rd, past many dry lake beds and towards an overnight storm.

The Mungo National Park lies 151 km north-west of Balranald on the Arumpo-Ivanhoe Road (part unsealed), and is included in the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Region. It can also be accessed from

Outback Trip to MUNGO NATIONAL PARK - New South Wales

Mungo National Park is located just over 1000kms west of Sydney. It would take approximately 13,5 hours to get there by car. The last 60kms of the trip will be on dirt road. Access to the park may be closed in the wet season.

The closest town is Pooncarie, 81kms away. There will be no phone reception in the area. If you plan to go there, make sure to have enough water, good spare tyre(s) and a reliable vehicle. A 4WD is recommended due to the corrugation, although a reliable hatchback could also get you there.

There are 2 campsites in the area. But if you prefer a little bit of luxury, there's a very limited small cabins with air con near the Visitor Centre.

This site is full of historical value. Lake Mungo, which shown as a large lake on the map, is no longer have any water. In fact, it has dried since 40,000 years ago.

There's a 70kms loop track around the Lake Mungo that will bring you across to some viewing platforms to the Walls of China.

This is a perfect spot for those who'd like to experience Australian Outback, like nowhere else in the world.

For photographer like myself, this spot is a true photographer's heaven. The Walls of China, the outback scenery, the wildlifes, the open skies for astrophotography, you name it!

If you'd like to see Australia other than the beaches and the bush, I will highly recommend a visit to this corner of New South Wales.
