Andrew Douch, a Man of the Baekdudaegan
70 days, 735 km.
Andrew Douch is the first foreigner to have completed this hike across the Baekdudaegan, the mountain range that spans across the Korean peninsula. This New Zealand man's dream is to climb up all of Korea's top 100 mountains.
In 2000, Douch arrived in Korea as an English teacher, and fell in love with Korea's intimate mountains, their beautiful scenery, and the villages tucked into the hills. Every weekend since then, he has been traveling all over Korea in search of beautiful mountains.
In 2007, he and a friend decided to challenge themselves to the Baekdudaegan. Douch walked 735 km over 70 days - the first foreigner to complete the hike. He even published a book about the Baekdudaegan, demonstrating his love for Korean mountains.
In 2013, Douch will leave for New Zealand for a five-month hike. Which of Korea's mountains does he want to visit before he returns home? We follow him on that last hike. Two weeks before his departure, Douch meets up with the hiking friends he has made over the years. He drives for two hours to Gimcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do, to reach Hwagak Mountain. Who is waiting for Douch there? We join Douch in his farewell party with his mountain friends.

New Arirang (Hei-Kyung Hong with Ensemble Orchestral de Paris)
Arirang (아리랑; [a.ɾi.ɾaŋ]) is a Korean folk song, often considered as the unofficial national anthem of Korea.
Many versions of the song start by describing the travails encountered by the subject of the song while crossing a mountain pass. Arirang is one name for the pass and hence the title of the song. Some versions of Arirang mention Mungyeong Saejae, which is the main mountain pass on the road connecting Seoul and southeastern Gyeongsang Province during the Joseon Dynasty.
There are a number of passes called Arirang Pass in Korea. One of them is in central-northeastern Seoul. This particular pass, however, was originally called Jeongneung Pass and was only renamed Arirang in 1926 to commemorate the release of the film Arirang. Older versions of the song long predate the movie. Arirang Pass (아리랑 고개) is an imaginary rendezvous of lovers in the land of dreams, although there is a real mountain pass, called Arirang Gogae, outside the Small East Gate of Seoul.
The heroine of the story from which the Arirang song originated was a fair maid of Miryang. In fact, she was a modest woman killed by an unrequited lover. But as time went on, the tragic story changed to that of an unrequited lady-love who complained of her unfeeling lover. The tune is sweet and appealing. The story is recounted in Miss Arirang in Folk Tales of Old Korea (Korean Cultural Series, Vol. VI).

Solitary Sage: The Profound Life and Legacy of Korea’s “Go-un” Choi Chi-won
Great scholar, writer and spiritual sage Choi Chi-won (857-?) is one of the most interesting yet enigmatic figures of all Korea's cultural history, displaying many virtues & talents and symbolizing many key themes. He exemplifies the tragic spirit of the Unified Shilla Dynasty’s waning days, and the incipient harmony among Korea’s Buddhism, Daoism and Confucianism – a general culture hero of Korean tradition. He served as a brilliant government official in both Tang China and Korea, but then adopted the scholar-name Go-un [Lonely Cloud] to reflect his feelings about his later years in effective internal exile, during which he practiced Daoism and lived in great Buddhist temples and recorded their histories, with biographies of their enlightened masters, some of which remain inscribed on stone monuments today. Finally, he attained “immortality” at Gaya-san Haein-sa. This lecture will tell the fascinating story of his life, showing many photos of the lovely sites associated with him, and demonstrate the profound effect that his legacy left on the next 1100 years of Korea's cultural development.
David A. Mason is a Professor of Korean Public Service at Chung-Ang University, Seoul Campus, and a longtime researcher on the religious characteristics of Korea's mountains. Prior to his assuming his current post, he served as a professor of Korean Cultural Tourism for 9 years, as a consultant for the national Ministry of Culture and Tourism for 5 years, and as professor of English out in the Korean countryside for 17 years.
A citizen of the United States, native of Michigan, he has been living in South Korea for 33 years now, always following his passionate interest in hiking Korea’s forested mountains and visiting their historic spiritual sites. He has proudly been a member of the RAS-KB for three decades. He was appointed the Honorary Ambassador of the Baekdu-daegan Ranges by the Korea Forest Service in 2011.
Mason earned a Masters' Degree in the History of Korean Religions from Yonsei University in 1997. He has authored and edited ten books on Korean culture and tourism, including Spirit of the Mountains about Korea's traditions of spiritual mountain-worship, the English Encyclopedia of Korean Buddhism, and Solitary Sage: The Profound Life, Wisdom and Legacy of Korea’s ‘Go-un’ Choi Chi-won. He has published many articles in academic journals and popular magazines, and has frequently been interviewed on various media. His popular website on sacred Korean mountains and mountain-spirits can be found at san-shin.org
