An aerial view of Larisa, Greece
Larissa holds a central position in the country, since it’s situated on the main transport axis of Greece, connecting Athens and Thessaloniki, while the airport of Central Greece is less than an hour away.
The river Pinios runs through the north part of the city and it is a meeting point for people who enjoy nature, walking, hiking and biking.
The city of Larissa has a history of 8.000 years, with two ancient theaters within its urban structure, while it also has an important current cultural history and infrastructure - the famous first regional Municipality Theatre, The Municipal Art Gallery of Larissa - G.I. Katsigras Museum, with a significant art collection and art workshops for children, the Ethnographical Historical Museum of Larissa and the Archaeological & Byzantine Museum of Larissa, the Municipal Conservatory, the International Film Festival of Larissa / Artfools every spring, the Cultural Festival of Pinios in June, to name a few.
Larissa is a very youthful and live city, with many cafés, restaurants and taverns, situated by the most part in the pedestrian centre, along with a very active commercial centre and in walking distance from many of the city’s historic monuments.
It’s a city full of cultural activities and events, such as amateurish theatrical scenes, a live scene of music bands and choirs, the symphonic orchestra and the philharmonic, very active local culture associations of folklore music and dance, a well known photography club and galleries that promote the very productive local artists. The Municipality of Larissa has also a long tradition in operating District Culture Clubs for arts and crafts for both children and adults, a famous Puppet Troupe – Tiritompa – that operates the only Puppet Museum in Greece and the Municipal School of Ballet that has showcased prominent dancers.
Sports are largely supported in the city, with a significant infrastructure of sports facilities, as well as athletic events. The Municipality of Larissa has created several and fully equipped sports facilities, which are ready to accept all citizens and accommodate any kind of event. In more than 10 district sports centers the Municipality supports Sports Academies, organizes Students’ and Local Associations’ Sports Championships and hosts athletic events throughout the year (RunGreece-Larissa, the event Run Pinios, the Half Marathon race Tirnavos - Larissa, the Hippocratic swimming races, Panthessalian track events for the Disabled, etc.)

Athens | Getting Around Attica
We are going to look at using the National Railway System and the long-distance bus services in order to get around greater Attica and mainland Greece. There are various options to get you to your destination comfortably at surprisingly low prices. For travel within the provinences of Athens, the greater Attica, you can use the orange intercity bus which in Greek is called KTEL bus and you can get to great destinations, such as Marathon or Cape Sounion, or in between beach rides quickly and on a budget! There are two locations that you can find these orange KTEL buses. The first is located at Pedio Areos area within 5 minutes of walking distance from the Victoria metro station and very near to the Natioanl Archeological Museum and the second is on the square called Platia agion Asomaton at the historical center which is located right on the Thision metro station. If you are traveling beyond Attica and prefer the bus, you can catch a ride from the Kifissos Bus Terminal and the Liosion bus terminal on the dark green and white KTEL buses, with routes to all major cities on the Greek Mainland, and even to a few islands that include a ferry boat ride! If you are travilling to thessalonica you need to remember that there is an extra KTEL bus lien at the Pedio Areos are. For the railway fans, you can visit historic Corinth and beach-side Kiato by taking the state-of-the-art Suburban Railway, which starts at the Airport, stops at Neratziotissa hube station and proceeds to either Athens downtown or all the way to Corinth and Kiato, all in less than 90 minutes! You can also connect with the National Railway at Central Railway station called Larissa station or head all the way to the port of Pireas to catch a ship to the islands!Remember that the Suburban Railroad trains have user-friendly doors, so make sure you push the doors open as they politely wait for you to proceed! If you plan to visit mainland Greece or continue traveling through Europe by train, then you can connect to OSE National Railways by taking the Suburban Railway or the Metro to Larissa station or the central railway station and proceed to dozens of locations on mainland Greece and Europe. There are great discounts online at the OSE website, and you can even select where you will sit on the train online to make sure you have a window seat on your journey! This is the end of your journey. If you need more information make sure and look at our webtv to find more videos about Athens. Thanks for watching!
