2013 Aga Khan Award for Architecture Winner - Rehabilitation of Tabriz Bazaar, Tabriz, Iran
The Tabriz Historic Bazaar Complex was officially protected in 1975 and has been covered by special stewardship measures until 2010, when it was added to the World Heritage List. The complex covers 27 hectares with over 5.5 kilometres of covered bazaars. Three different protection areas have been established (a nominated area, a buffer zone and a landscape zone), subject to special regulations incorporated into the planning instruments. Since 2000, numerous complexes within the bazaar have been rehabilitated with the participation of the owners and tenants. Infrastructure has been improved and public facilities have been built. The Tabriz Bazaar is a unique example of urban conservation and development project in which heritage plays a catalyst role in rejuvenating the tangible and intangible memory of the historic city of Tabriz.

Mountain peak Eynali
Hike in Eynali Artificial Forest (in the north of Tabriz). There is a paved hiking road from the foot hill of Mount Eynali to its first peak. Many residents hike through the red during weekend. There is also an Eynali cable - a gondola lift which lifts visitors from the foot hills of Mount Eynali to the peak. The top station which calls The Roof of Tabriz has a view of all of the city. There are couple of sites in the top station including an old shrine (Zoroastrian Temple), a monument for the unknown soldiers (war heroes), two windmills and a restaurant which calls Roof of Tabriz.
Eynali is a small mountain range in north of Tabriz, Iran. The range has a couple of peaks including Eynali (1800 m), Halileh (1850 m), Pakeh-chin (1945 m), Bahlul (1985 m) and the highest one Dand (2378 m). It has red soil and it is seen from everywhere in Tabriz. There is a tomb at top of the mountain which is believed to be the grave of two clerics which the mountain's name is related to them. However some people believe that originally the building was a Zoroasterian temple and the shrine name to is a cover to saving the structure from destruction during Muslims invasion. Nowadays many residents of Tabriz used to hiking from base to the shrine as a daily sport activity. In early 2000s like many of other mountains in vicinity of big Iranian cities couple of unknown Iranian victims of Iran-Iraq war's are buried in top of the mountain behind the shrine as memories of the war. The mountain is also used by telecommunication companies and TV stations to rely their waves. Behind this the city council of Tabriz is trying to make an artificial forest at the hillsides of Eynali as northern green belt of Tabriz.

Photos and full video Iran, Turkey - giannispsaroudakis.com Ταμπρίζ ή Ταυρίδα ( Tabriz ) είναι η πρώτη πόλη που μείναμε στο Ιράν.

Iran, Tabriz: Children’s participation in the process of urban planning for local parks
The main strategy is to achieve the meaningful participation of local children in planning urban space at the local scale. According to the designed action plan, the team was included from a group of 28 participating children and representatives from the Urban Planning and Architecture deputy of Tabriz Municipality, District 6 of Tabriz Municipality and the Center for Intellectual Development of Children and Youth. Then the children, during a meeting with facilitators, got information about the reason of their presence and participation in the project of designing the park as coworkers of design team and they also got to know the site of project. Then they were asked to paint their ideas for a Desirable park on ceramic tiles using acrylic paint. Children's works was installed on a portion of the park wall adjacent to the special spaces for children as an objective representation of children's involvement and its informational aspects for city officials and park visitors as a good practice. The paintings were then analyzed and the results were used by urban designers and the executive team in the implementation. As a result children learned the process of urban planning and interestedly and with a high self-confidence thought about the environment and what they could bring about it and had started brainstorming. Through the project we learnt how to coordinate planners, stakeholders and city executive bodies to do a participatory project in an Intimate atmosphere which was followed up with objective and executive results.

Get around
City transport, awaiting the Metro currently under construction (and still for a long time) is limited to Taxis, shared taxis and buses.
Taxis can be chartered for a modest fee (around 20 USD if you need a driver and car for the whole day to visit the region!)
Shared taxis are even more of a bargain, but you will need to speak a few words of Persian and risk your life by stepping on the side of the road and scream your destination at passing-by Paykans. However, the experience of sharing a car with 4 locals of both genders and all ages (+ driver) can be fun! Odds are the fare won't be more than 10 cents (1.000 Rials) for a 10-minutes trip. Some drivers even refuse to be paid, the pleasure of chatting with a foreigner about the various plagues of Iran being apparently enough to make their day. (be careful of tarof, though)
Buses are difficult to take (no map, no schedule) and definitely not worth the experience when compared to shared taxis despite being quasi-free.

Inside Tabriz
With a very rich history, Tabriz used to house many historical monuments. Unfortunately, many of them were destroyed in repeated invasions and attacks of foreign forces, negligence of the ruling governments, as well natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods. What remains now mostly dates back to the Ilkhanids, the Safavids, and the Qajars. Some of the monuments are unrivaled masterpieces of architecture. The Shahrdari Square is the center of the town, on the south-west of which stands the imposing edifice of Municipality. The railway station (5 km from the center of the town) is at the western edge of the town. The Quri Chai river runs through Tabriz, and most places of interest to the visitor are to the south of this river and alone or north of Imam Khomeini Avenue.

El Goli (locals call it Shah Goli), Shahgoli Blvd. (South east of Tabriz). It is a pool and a building in the middle of the poor. It used to be the summer palace for rulers or the king who ruled in Tabriz. Nowadays it is considered a suburban park with a square artificial pond. In the center, a small hall is on an island and hosts a restaurant. Very nice for eating some tchelokebab or sip some tea while enjoying the freshness of the park in summer. edit
Blue Mosque (Goy Machid), Near to Mansur St., Emam Ave (City Center, close to Saat Tower). 9ː00 am till 4ː00 pm. Originally built in 1465, this mosque which was once certainly superb, but was severely damaged in an earthquake in 1778, leaving only the entrance Iwan. It was reconstructed at early 1900 by the Iranian Ministry of Culture. The inside of the mosque is tiled with superb blue ceramic, but unfortunately, many pieces went missing during the quake and were simply replaced by painting instead of tiles. Some of the original tiles can be found around the entrance. edit
Bazaar of Tabriz, Rasteh-Kucheh (City center). is one of the oldest bazaars of the Middle East and the largest covered bazaar in the world. It was inscribed as World Heritage Site by UNESCO in July 2010. The Bazaar is still alive and considered one of the major shopping and commerce center in Tabriz. Tabriz has been a place of cultural exchange since antiquity and its historic bazaar complex is one of the most important commercial centers on the Silk Road. Located in the center of the city of Tabriz, Iran, this spectacular structure consists of several sub-bazaars, such as Amir Bazaar (for gold and jewelry), Mozzafarieh (a carpet bazaar), a shoe bazaar, and many other ones for various goods. The most prosperous time of Tabriz and it's bazaar was in 13th century when town became the capital city of Safavid kingdom. The city lost it's status as capital in 16th century, but it's bazaar has been being important as a commercial and economic center. Although, numerous modern shops and malls have been established nowadays, the bazaar of Tabriz has remained economic heart of both the city and northwestern of Iran. It is worthy of mention that Tabriz bazaar has been being an important political place, and one can point out its importance in the Iranian Constitutional Revolution in the last century and Islamic Revolution in the contemporary time.

Tabriz, East Azerbaijan Province (Blue Mosque) - Iran
Tabriz, the capital of northwest Iran’s East Azerbaijan province, with almost two million population is predominantly Azerbaijani, an ethnic group that is mainly Shi’a Muslim, speaks a Turkic language and has a mixed Iranian, Caucasian and Turkic heritage. The region also bears architectural and cultural evidence of the many invasions it has endured over the centuries, including the Arabic Azd tribes from Yemen in the 7th Century, the Mongols in the 13th, Safavids in the 16th, Ottomans in the 18th and Russians in the 19th
If a thousand enemies are intent on my demise
With you as my friend, fear won’t arise.
I’m alive with the hope of union with thee
Every moment I fear death, otherwise.
Breath by breath, your scented breeze I must inhale
Moment by moment, from sorrows exhale my cries.
Only dreaming of you, go to sleep my two eyes
Patiently longing for thee, my heart to itself lies.
Don’t pull away your rein when you cut me with your sword
My head is my shield, while my hand your saddle-strap ties.
Where can we see your face just as you are, true and pure?
Each based on his own grasp can realize.
Indigent Hafiz is the apple of people’s eyes
At your door, prostrated, your vision espies. Hafiz

Ark-e-Alishah (Ark Citadel), Serah Taleqani, Emam Ave (City Center, close to Saat Tower.). During the Friday prayers there might be some restrictions for visitors.. It is a 28 meter wall which is the remnants of Tabriz city citadel and city wall. Ark was firstly made as a very big mosque in thirteenth century, however the devastating earthquake and other natural disasters ruined much of it except the main wall of the mihrab which is preserved till today. In later years this wall used as part of the city wall and the main part of fortress of Tabriz till end of Qdjar dynasty. During the wars of Safavid-Ottoman, and Perso-Russian wars this fortress was always one of the major Strong holds of Iranian troops. In early 20th century the constitutional revolutionist used the ark citadel as their military base in Tabriz. At the collapse of Autonomous Government of Azerbaijan Ark was the latest resistance of their troops against Iranian army. In recent years the surrounding area of Ark is used to build another big mosque for Friday prayers.
Azerbaijan Museum, Emam Ave. (Next to Blue Mosque, very close to Saat Tower). It is a good place encompassing the long Iranian history with a focus on Iranian Azerbaijan. This is the most dominant archaeological museum in North-West of Iran. The museum includes the archaeological discoveries in Azerbaijan region. It has three galleries: Pre-Islamic History, Islamic History, and Coins. It also has a gallery for recently built sculptures in the basement and a yard for the stone sculptures. But poorly kept: very few translations and erratic classification make the trip inside the numerous dynasties intricate for first timers.
