MUNIYARA @Bankalam !!! 2000 YEARS OLD MYSTERIOUS CHAMBER
A megalithic chamber known as Muniyara which was discovered at Thekkan Bankalam near Nileshwaram,Kasargod Dist. According to archeologists and historians, this Muniyara might be 2000 years old. It has resemblance with other Muniyaras discovered in various places in the district. Compared to other Muniyaras, it is larger and also has a stone pillar in the middle portion.
I am not a historian, archaeologist or researcher in these areas and just visited this valuable monument and presented my own thoughts by reference. Research scholars in this area can oppose and correct my thoughts if there is any wrong statement. As this is a pre historical monument ,I think we can explore more details.

Muniyara at Marayoor Kerala
Muniyara is part of Marayoor which is 40 km from Munnar in Idukki district.
It is a region that fascinates anthropologists and archaeologists from around the world, who throng there to research and observe its legendary Dolmenoid cist remnants belonging to the Megalithic Age. These were burial chambers, made of four stones, placed on edges and covered by a fifth one called the cap stone. Dolmenoids contain several burial chambers, others have a quadrangle scooped out in laterite and lined on the sides with granite slabs. These are also covered with cap stones. The Marayoor area in Idukki district is famous for for its natural sandalwood forests and pre-historic rock paintings.

Also called Muniyaras, these dolmens belong to the Iron Age. These dolmenoids were burial chambers made of four stones placed on edge and covered by a fifth stone called the cap stone. Some of these Dolmenoids contain several burial chambers, while others have a quadrangle scooped out in laterite and lined on the sides with granite slabs. These are also covered with cap stones. Dozens of Dolmens around the area of old Siva temple (Thenkasinathan Temple) at Kovilkadavu on the banks of the River Pambar, and rock paintings on the south-western slope of the plateau overlooking the river have attracted visitors. Apart from the dolmens of Stone Age, several dolmens of Iron Age exist in this region especially on the left side of river Pambar as is evident from the usage of neatly dressed granite slabs for the dolmens. At least one of them has a perfectly circular hole of 28 cm diameter inside the underground chamber. This region has several types of dolmens. Large number of them are overground with about 70–90 cm height. Another type has a height 140–170 cm. There is an overground dolmen with double length up to 350 cm. Fragments of burial urns are also available in the region near the dolmens. This indicates that the dolmens with 70–90 cm height were used for burial of the remains of people of high social status. Burial urns were used for the burial of the remains of commoners. The dolmens with raised roofs might have been used for habitation of people. Why some people lived in the cemeteries has not been satisfactorily explained.

The Muniyara 3,000 BC Dolmens near Spice Tree, Munnar, India
The dolmens, possibly dating from 3,000 BC are a complicated walk from Spice Tree Hotel Resort. A dolmen is described as: a megalithic tomb with a large flat stone laid on upright ones. And that they are...
But there is much disagreement whether the stone structures were used for yogi to meditate or prehistoric tombs. And don't let anyone tell you the walk up is easy. It isn't...

Muniyara or Munimada is a megalithic monument found in the midland and coastal areas of Kerala. The caves found in Kandanassery, Kattakampal and Eyyal in Thrissur district and Chathamparambu near Feroke in Kozhikode have multiple cavities.
Bead strings with valuable gems were discovered from the caves at Chathamparambu. Some experts are of the view that Buddhist monks attained nirvana in these caves.
The caves date back to 2 or 3 BC. Historians have proved that many of such caves found in South India were the housings of Buddha and Jain monks.
Some other historians claim by that these caves were the residences of the members of the Essenes, a Judaist missionary group, that reached the state along with St. Thomas, the Apostle during the reign of Uthiyan Cheran of the Chera dynasty. According to them, these missionaries reached here during AD 68-69 and the locals called them ‘Eeshanis.’
The historians say that the Essenes sect members are believed to have hid the ‘Dead Sea Scrolls’ in the Qumran Caves while fleeing from the Romans during the destruction of Jerusalem. They are said to have reached Kerala later.
The Roman coins discovered from the Eyyal village were of 31 BC - AD 68. The 250 Roman coins excavated from the Essenes’ former habitat at the Jericho Valley too dated back to the same period.
The laterite caves and clay pots found at Jericho Valley and Ariyannoor in the state have striking similarities.

Muniyara at Kayyanikadavu, Adichily 03
Remnants of two megalithic Muniyaras dating between 500 AD and 300 BC was identified by K.G.Sasi and Dr. Babu M.N. at Kayyanikadavu at Adichily. Most probably this must be a burial site. It seems that the area was once a Jain settlement. There were many Muniyaras at this site. Many have to be identified still. People say that they have seen more than sixty Nannangadis during the last twenty years. We could still see remnants of a Nannangadi there. A black stone idol found at the nearby Dharmasastha temple seems to have a Jain Origin in a relief work resembling an elephant or a conch. This must be carved between the end of the megalithic period and the beginning of the Iron Age in Kerala. We could also see the remnants of an old stone temple there spread within a radius of 200 metre. These stones contained relief carvings with lesser thickness. This may be due to wear and tear caused during the pass of centuries. However it is more possible that these stones were carved with early technologies. At a nearby quarry we could also seen large plain surfaces of rock with cleavage or breakage zone. The presence of such broken sheets of quality metamorphic rock must have attracted the Jain folk to settle there as the technology of the day enabled them to build tiny dwelling places or burial chambers. The muniyaras identified seems to be buriyal chambers. The presence of large number of Nannangadis there also give strength to such a conclusion. It may either point to the presence of a Jain settlement of many generations and centuries. If not, it must be a place of mass massacre of important Jain folk. Until a century ago the remnants and the land around were under control of the Adichily Kovilakam. Kayyanikadavu is situated within one kilometer of the boundaries of Travancore and Cochin dynasties.
