Munshi Ghat is a favorite! It's one of the most visually appealing, and architecturally impressive, ghats. Sridhara Narayana Munshi, finance minister of the State of Darabhanga, constructed it in 1912. Munshi Ghat is actually an extension of Darabhanga Ghat, an imposing palace built in the early 1900s by the royal family of Bihar. These days, it's a popular bathing place for Muslims in Varanasi.

Varanasi / Banaras, is a city on the banks of the Ganges (Ganga) in Uttar Pradesh, 320 kilometres (200 mi) southeast of the state capital, Lucknow. It is the holiest of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) in Hinduism and Jainism, and played an important role in the development of Buddhism. Some Hindus believe that death at Varanasi brings salvation. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and the oldest in India.Varanasi is also known as the favourite city of the Hindu deity Lord Shiva as it has been mentioned in the Rigveda that this city at older times was known as Kashi or Shiv ki Nagri.

Many of its temples were plundered and destroyed by Mohammad Ghauri in the 12th century. The temples and religious institutions in the city now are dated to the 18th century.

The Kashi Naresh (Maharaja of Kashi) is the chief cultural patron of Varanasi, and an essential part of all religious celebrations. The culture of Varanasi is closely associated with the Ganges. The city has been a cultural center of North India for several thousand years, and has a history that is older than most of the major world religions. The Benares Gharana form of Hindustani classical music was developed in Varanasi, and many prominent Indian philosophers, poets, writers, and musicians live or have lived in Varanasi. Gautama Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath located near Varanasi.

Varanasi is the spiritual capital of India. Scholarly books have been written in the city, including the Ramcharitmanas of Tulsidas. Today there is a temple of his namesake in the city, the Tulsi Manas Mandir. One of the largest residential universities of Asia the Banaras Hindu University is located here. Varanasi, called by many names is also known as the city of temples, the holy city of India, the religious capital of India, the city of shiva, and the city of learning.

Munshi Ghat is one of the Ghats of Varanasi, in India. It is located at 25º 18.335' North and 83º 00.566' East (Darbhanga Ghat, centre), and is 0.052ha (the two ghats and nearby area). The palatial building by Clarks Hotel Group; the ghat area by the Municipal Corporation.

Sridhara Narayana Munshi, a finance minister in the estate of Nagpur had built this ghat and partly the palatial building; after his name it was called Munshi ghat. In 1915 the Brahmin king of Darbhanga (Bihar) purchased this ghat developed in the form what it later on known as Darbhanga Ghat. Tthis is an extended form of the Munshi Ghat.

The Queen of the Malwa kingdom (Indore, MP referenced in the video), Ahilyabai Holkar, donated 22x40 kilos of gold for Viswanath Temple, which is just a bit off the ghats in Varanasi. In fact, besides this, Ahilyabai has worked and contributed to well over two dozens temples and ghats all across India. She was also known as the philoshper's queen'.

You also see the mention of Munsi Ghat from Maharaja of Nagpur. You also see Darbhanga Ghat, donated by Maharaja of Darbhanga, Bihar.

He suspects that though I speak the local Bhojpuri dialect, I do not reside in Varanasi. He suspects that my English accent is not local, which is a fact. :) These guys know their stuff. Even an x-local can not fool'em. :)

Munshi Ghat is one of the more photogenic ghats along the Old City stretch of the Ganges in Varanasi. The Old India collides with the New India in this landscape which is dotted with generators and telecom towers, towering above a landscape that is otherwise eternal along the banks of the holy river.

The Indian urban landscape is now cluttered with multiple cell-phone, data and other telecommunications towers, standing atop buildings that may or may not be able to hold their weight along with the added weight of generators that provide them with back-up power.

Varanasi, the holy city of India, is also known by the name of Kashi and Benaras. Kashi, the city of Moksha for Hindus since centuries, is known for its fine-quality silks, 'paan' and Benares Hindu University and Avimukta of the ancient days, Varanasi is the most popular pilgrimage point for the Hindus. One of the seven holiest cities, Varanasi city is also one the Shakti Peethas and one of the twelve Jyotir Linga sites in India. In Hinduism it is believed that those who die and are cremated here get an instant gateway to liberation from the cycle of births and re-births.

Considered as the abode of Lord Shiva, Varanasi is situated on the banks of River Ganges, which is believed to have the power of washing away all of one's sins. As pundits here will tell you, whatever is sacrificed and chanted here or given in charity reaps its fruits thousand times more than those good deeds performed at other places because of the power of that place. It is believed that three nights of fasting in Varanasi city can reap you rewards of many thousands of lifetimes of asceticism!

Varanasi is the oldest city of the world. Varanasi is more than 3000 years old and is famous as the city of temples. In Varanasi, there are temples at every few paces. Looking at the number of temples in Varanasi, it is hard to believe that a large number of them were demolished during the medieval times. Jyotirlinga Visvanatha Temple or Golden Temple, rebuilt in 1776, is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Jnana Vapi well (meaning 'Well of Wisdom) is believed to have been dug by Lord Shiva himself. It is believed that the majestic Alamgir mosque has replaced one of the most ancient shrines known as the temple of Bindu Madhava. The thirty-three hundred million shrines fill one with awe and wonder with sheer numbers.

The Ganga Ghats (river front) are the most popular pilgrimage spot of Varanasi and are centers of music and learning. There is a great tradition of Yatras in the holy city of Kashi and the most sacred path is that of Panchkoshi Parikrama, the fifty-mile path with a radius of five miles that cover 108 shrines along the way, with Panchakoshi Temple as its main shrine. Other popular pilgrimage route is Nagara Pradakshina, which covers seventy-two shrines along the way. Since time immemorial Varanasi is a great center of learning. The holy city has been a symbol of spiritualism, philosophy and mysticism for thousands of years and has produced great saints and personalities like Guatama Buddha, Mahavira, Kabir, Tulsi Das, Shankaracharaya, Ramanuja and Patanjali.

There are nearly 100 ghats in the Varanasi city. The famous and oldest ghats of all these are the Dashashwamegha, Manikarnika and Harishchandra Ghat. Some of the ghats are made there by Hindu rulers such as Ahilya Bai Holkar of Malwa region, Peshwa’s of Gwalior, Man Singh of Amber, Jai Singh of Jaipur etc. Some of the famous personalities of Banaras have named the ghats on their own name. Munshi Ghat is after Hindi poet the Munshi Premchand, Tulsi ghat is after Hindu poet the Tulsidas who has written Ramcharitmanas. Many ghats are associated with the legends in Varanasi like the former Kashi Naresh owns Shivala or Kali ghat.
