Freiburg im Breisgau, or more commonly Freiburg is known as the Jewel of the Black Forest. By German standards it is a major city in southwest Germany, situated on the edge of the Black Forest. When ordering train tickets and similar items online, be careful not to confuse Freiburg (im Breisgau) with Freiburg (an der Elbe) or Fribourg in Switzerland.
Münster cathedral is Freiburg's biggest sight in the city, one of the oldest and most beautiful in all of Europe. The gargoyles are not to be missed; be sure to study every corner of the Münster. Make the effort to climb the stairs to the top of the tower for the fabulous views (Entry €1.50). Every day in the morning until 13:00 Mon-Fri and 13:30 Saturday, there is a market on the square surrounding the church. Visit on Saturday morning, as it then will be the biggest and nicest. Vendors are pleasant and sell local produce and goods. Recommended fare is a Bratwurst mit Brötchen (Bratwurst in a bun) or Currywurst for around €2.20. They're inexpensive, authentic, and make a delicious lunch or snack.
Bächle are small canals that line the streets of the inner city. These canals were once meant as a way to fight fires in medieval Freiburg. The locals say that if you accidentally fall or step into one, you will marry a Freiburg resident.
Schwabentor. One of two remaining old city gates.
Martinstor. The other old city gate, which is well known locally for the McDonald's next door which has placed its logo on the gate.

On the south side of the Minster there are up to 65 stalls where you can marvel at the versatile and extraordinary displays of merchants. Here original ceramic and wood works are offered for sale. Next door, exotic fruits, preserved antipasti and fragrant spices promise delicious taste sensations. The market's offer varies depending on the day of the week and the season, as nature dictates: strawberries and asparagus in spring, bright flowers and berries in summer, extraordinary pumpkin varieties and spicy mushrooms in autumn, and all sorts of cabbage specialties and hot chestnuts in winter.
The most beautiful is the Cathedral Square on Saturday morning. The market then provides a lot of life and atmosphere.
The Friborgers have been buying their vegetables from the farmers for generations and have combined this with the Roten at the sausage stand. Here is especially Häusler sausage stand recommended.

GERMANY: Freiburg city & Schlossberg tower [HD]
Freiburg im Breisgau is situated in the heart of a major wine-growing region. Because of its scenic beauty, relatively warm and sunny climate, and easy access to the scenic beauty of the Black Forest, Freiburg is a hub for regional tourism.
At the centre of the old city is the Münsterplatz or Cathedral Square, Freiburg's largest square. A farmers market is held here every day except Sundays. This is the site of Freiburg's Münster, a gothic minster cathedral constructed of red sandstone, built between 1200 and 1530 and noted for its towering spire.
The city has an unusual system of gutters (called Freiburg Bächle) that run throughout its centre. These Bächle, once used to provide water to fight fires and feed livestock, are constantly flowing with water diverted from the Dreisam. During the summer, the running water provides natural cooling of the air.
Freiburg is known as an eco-city because of its advanced environmental practices. The citizens of Freiburg are known in Germany for their love of cycling and recycling. The city has an extensive pedestrian zone in the city center where no automobiles are allowed.
Freiburg is a center of academia and research with numerous intellectual figures and Nobel Laureates having lived, worked, and taught there. The city houses one of the oldest and most renowned of German universities, the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg, as well as its medical center.

Places to see in ( Freiburg - Germany ) Munsterplatz
The Minster Square in the centre district of Freiburg is a paved area surrounding the Freiburger Minster. The city library, the Historical Merchants' Hall, the Wentzinger House and also the Korn House are located on this square. The Freiburger streams run along the sides of the square.
Nearly all of the surrounding buildings were destroyed in the bombing of Freiburg on November 27, 1944. Only the buildings on the southeast side of the square, the historic mall, the Wentzinger House and the Old Guard as well as the Minster itself, were spared from destruction.
The Minster churchyard was originally surrounded by an approximately 1.60 metre high wall, which was only taken down in 1785. It served mainly as a city cemetery on the north side in the Middle Ages. Here, the outlines of the former cemetery chapel of St. Andreas are embedded into the cobblestones. The chapel, which included an ossuary in the basement, was pulled down in 1752. In the year 1514, at the instance of Emperor Maximilian I, the cemetery was relocated to the suburban town of Neuburg because for sanitary reasons. Ever since then, the square has been used as a market place, which until then was on Kaiser-Joseph Street.
The market takes place on all working days - with one exception: on August 15, the day of the Assumption of Mary, who is the patron saint of the Minster, the square remains clear. On approximately 10,000 square metres, 80 to 180 market stalls offer groceries, craftwork and souvenirs. The northern side, the so-called farmer's market, is exclusively reserved for local farms and their products. On special occasions, for example the Freiburger wine festival, several stalls have to be shifted into the surrounding alleyways and partially also onto Kaiser-Joseph Street. For many visitors of the city, the minster market of Freiburg is an outstanding attraction. Until the pedestrian zone was established in the 1970s, the square was used as a car park in the afternoon.
In front of the main entrance there are three plague columns, which are located beneath the tower of the Minster. They were crowned by St. Mary as well as by the two patron Saints, Lambert of Lüttich and Alexander. St. Alexander is a catacomb saint who replaced St. George in portrayals as a patron saint in the 17th century. On the minster square, St. George can be found on the 'Georgsbrunnen', which is a fountain named after him. St. Lambert can be seen on in the 'Fischbrunnen'.

Places to see in ( Freiburg - Germany ) Schwabentor
The Schwabentor, also called Obertor in the Middle Ages, is the most recent of the two remaining city gates of the medieval defensive wall of Freiburg im Breisgau in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It must have been a real adventure to venture outside the city walls in the Middle Ages. Mysterious forests, strange roads and the constant fear of being attacked by robbers kept both merchants and travelers on their guard. Anyone who hadn’t been put off by their own fear might have paid heed to the warning of the 'Boy with Thorn' (Dornauszieher) about leaving the city.
The relief figure with an oversized head and no neck grimaces with a tortured expression. He sits atop the gate’s portal, legs crossed, pulling out a thorn from his foot. This symbol of sin and punishment since ancient times has led historians to surmise that the small relief on the Schwabentor is a reminder not to stray from the right path.
Those who did dare walk over Salzstrasse through the gate could immediately cross the Dreisam Bridge to reach the most important trade routes in the Black Forest. A Swabian salt merchant once traveled one of these routes to Freiburg, having fallen in love with the city on a previous trading expedition. He brought with him barrels full of money, which he intended to use to buy Freiburg. But the citizens simply laughed at him and derided his plan, especially when, with much fanfare, he opened the barrels to discover that his penny-pinching wife had intervened. She was not very enthusiastic about her husband’s idea of spending all his money on a city and had the wise foresight to replace the money with sand and stones before he set off.
Legend has it that this is how the Schwabentor came to be named. And since the 17th century, the salt merchant and his wagon have adorned the inside of the town gate. The patron saint of Freiburg, St. George the dragon slayer, is emblazoned on the gate’s exterior wall.

Places to see in ( Freiburg - Germany ) Mundenhof
The Mundenhof is located on the western edge of Freiburg im Breisgau, and is the smallest district in Freiburg, with only 46 residents. The zoo on the grounds of the Mundenhof is well-visited. The municipal garden center is also located on the grounds. The Mundenhof is one of many Green Spaces in Freiburg, which present a major factor in its reputation as a green city.
In 1968, the grounds were converted to a small outdoor zoo, called a Tiergehege in German to differentiate it from larger zoological gardens. It is the largest zoo in Baden-Württemberg, covering 38 hectares. Eugen Keidel, mayor of Freiburg im Breisgau at the time, was a strong supporter of the project, and on September 28, 1968, the zoo was opened to the public.
In 1971 the Fördergemeinschaft Freiburger Tiergehege e.V. (Friends’ association for Freiburg zoological gardens) was founded. Domesticated species from all over the world and some undomesticated species can now be seen at the Mundenhof.
A top priority of the Mundenhof zoo is to care for and display endangered domesticated species. The open-air exhibition ground is divided into eight sections, each of which are host to various species specific to particular continents. The zoo is home to peacocks, gibbons, crab-eating macaques, brown bears, emus, ostriches, alpacas, yaks, llamas, and many other species. About 30 different species and about 180 individual animals can be observed.
The Verein der Aquarien- und Terrarienfreunde e.V. (Friends‘ association of aquariums and terrariums) converted a former horse barn to house 3 terrariums and 12 pools. The pools range in volume from 500 liters (132 US gallons) to 3000 liters (792 US gallons), and they are divided into 5 salt water and 7 fresh water pools. This section of the park is also dependent on donations to exist, because entry is free.
The park has many interconnecting paths with various viewing points with views of the city of Freiburg and the surrounding land. There is also a restaurant on the grounds of the Mundenhof, called the Hofwirtschaft. Next to the restaurant is a playground. A further attraction are the storks that nest on the Mundenhof grounds. Their nests are further off, but can easily be observed through binoculars.
