MUNYONYO: A little known site in the martyrs’ story
Namugongo Martyrs’s Shrines in Wakiso district are assumed to be the most important spots in the journey of martyrdom. However, hidden history suggests that the Munyonyo site could be holding a significant importance in the death of the Uganda Martyrs since it’s where Kabaka Mwanga made judgement and convicted his pages to death for treason.

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of thousands of Ugandan Catholics turned out at Munyonyo Martyrs' Shrine in Kampala on Saturday afternoon to celebrate mass with Pope Francis.
It was the second day of Pope Francis' three-day visit to Uganda, who is on a six-day tour of Africa.
Francis was in Uganda mainly to honour the memory of a group of Ugandan Christians who were killed in the late 19th century on the orders of a local king eager to thwart the growing influence of Christianity.
Those victims, known as the Uganda Martyrs, include 45 Anglicans and Catholics killed between 1885 and 1887. Pope Paul VI canonized the 22 Ugandan Catholics in 1964.
An enthusiastic crowd greeted Francis as he arrived at a shrine honouring the martyrs in Munyonyo, where they were condemned to death. Francis said their witness helped Christianity grown in Uganda, and that the king's plot to wipe out the followers of Christ had failed.
On Sunday, Francis is due to arrive in the Central African Republic.
