Short Japanese Culture Lesson: Murasaki Shikibu
In Uji, a town south of Kyoto, they honor the author Murasaki Shikibu with a small statue. In the early 11th Century, Murasaki Shikibu penned the Genji Monogatari, Tale of Genji, the first novel in Japan and perhaps the world.
Her story is about the life and loves of Prince Genji, a Japanese aristocratic playboy sometime in the 9th or 10th Century. I ask a couple of native experts about the famed authoress.
Room of Genji at Ishiyama-dera (石山寺) Temple, Shiga Prefecture, Japan
Room of Genji is located next the Main Worship Hall (Hondo) in Ishiyama-dera (石山寺) Temple, Shiga Prefecture, Japan.
It is said that Lady Murasaki Shikibu wrote the famous novel of the Heian Period The Tale of Genji (Genji Monogatari) in this room under the full moon light in August, 1004.
There are conflicting theories of where Lady Murasaki actually wrote this novel, one theory says that she wrote the novel at Rozanji Temple in Kyoto City, where her residence is located. However she might have spent a month at Room of Genji at Ishiyama-dera Temple and wrote parts of the Tale of Genji here.
The large temple garden behind the main Temple, has a statue of Lady Murasaki Shikibu, which is a great sight to watch.
Hope you enjoy this video.
Ancient Art Links: The Tale of Genji, Part One
The Tale of Genji (Part One) features the first major exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum, focusing on the artistic tradition inspired by a classic work of Japanese literature, The Tale of Genji. Written by Murasaki Shikibu in the early eleventh-century imperial court, the tale is often referred to as the world's first novel.
The exhibition features more than 120 works inspired by the novel, covering the period from the eleventh century to the present.
In Part One, Harvard professor Melissa McCormick, curator of the exhibition, leads the audience on a discovery tour of Japanese art and culture; John T. Carpenter, Curator of Japanese Art, at the Met, provides background information about Japanese literature and language development of the time.

Tale of Genji Museum and Uji River Cormorant Fishing (Ukai)
Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture
This journey to Uji focused on the area’s Heian roots
and particularly those places that figured in the Japanese classic,
“The Tale of Genji.” (The story itself and Japanese culture between
the 8th and 12th centuries are explained at the Tale of Genji Museum.)
The film also presented the summertime spectacle of cormorant fishing
on the Uji River with a close-up look at the dexterous skills
these women wield and the magnificence of the birds themselves.
