Strange fishes found in Murmansk Russia

As humanity turns its gaze increasingly outwards in search of life on distant planets, a Russian deep-sea fisherman has reminded us of the incredible biodiversity lurking in the inner depths of our own world – most of which we still know literally nothing about.
Working on a trawler based in the port of Murmansk, Roman Fedortsov has certainly seen a thing or two on his adventures in the icy waters of the Barents Sea. And while we shouldn't be celebrating the fact that so many exquisitely unique deep-sea creatures have been accidentally caught up in the fishing nets cast by Fedortsov and his crewmates, his collection of alien-like fish does at least give us an opportunity to study some of the planet's most bizarre creatures.
Displaying his collection of deep-sea monsters on his Twitter and Instagram pages, Fedortsov reveals animals like the amazing ghost shark, or chimaera as it is otherwise known. Living at depths of around 2,600 meters (8,500 feet), these eerie creatures are extremely elusive, and were only filmed for the very first time earlier this month.
Ghost sharks' eyes only glow green when they are in the light, and remain black in the darkness of the deep sea. In fact, blackness is a common feature of many predators living in the murky depths, as this ensures they absorb rather than reflect the small amount of light that reaches their habitat, ensuring they remain invisible to prey.
Similarly, red wavelengths of light don't penetrate to the deep sea, so fish with red skin do not reflect any light either and are impossible to see. This specimen, which appears similar to a deep-sea redfish, is the perfect example.
Russia's rough Norwegian sea coast
Murmansk, the metropolis on the Barents Sea, is anything but Russia's cold north. There's always something going on here, for example the Olympic Polar Games. Ice surfing and ice swimming, reindeer racing, the first atom ice breaker in the history of the world, a corner shop in ice and snow, endearing village school lessons and the singing Norwegian Sea Fleet - arctic lifestyle far away, north of the polar circle.

RUSSIA: MURMANSK: RUSSIAN SUBMARINE BASE
Russian/Nat
U-S officials are hoping for an agreement on closer ties between Russia and NATO when Presidents Clinton and Yeltsin meet in Moscow Wednesday.
Russia strongly objects to NATO expanding up to its borders and its defence minister has even threatened retaliation if the Western alliance moves further east.
But APTV, during an exclusive visit to Russia's Northern Fleet at Murmansk, discovered that some of the country's key forces would be ill-prepared to carry out such a retaliation.
On a peninsula to the north of Murmansk lie the berths of Russia's main atomic submarine base.
Just 80 kilometres away across the water is Norway - a country which joined NATO for fear of a Soviet invasion.
Despite détente, the submarines still put to sea in preparation for future conflicts.
But following the break-up of the U-S-S-R and Russia's economic decline, the fleet, once the pride of the Soviet navy, has fallen onto hard times.
Scarce funds have forced down the number of hours submarines are at sea, thus affecting the preparedness of the Russian fleet.
SOUNDBITE: (In Russian)
The navy is in a state of collapse. There is no money to build new vessels and those that are afloat have become obsolete because of lack of funding.
SUPER CAPTION: Sergei Soroka - First Officer
Officers used to be tempted to the arctic port by big bonuses as compensation for the harsh climate and living months in cramp conditions underwater.
But military cutbacks have put a stop to such payments.
Now the commander of a sub carrying up to 24 atomic warheads receives only 240 U-S dollars a month - his men less than half this amount.
Last year, sailors refused to go to sea for two months because the government was unable to pay their wages.
Morale is low even among the most loyal and long-serving of officers.
SOUNDBITE: (In Russian)
I wasn't going to quit the navy but I have been driven to it. I'm prepared to serve until the end of my contract but then I'm giving
it all up.
SUPER CAPTION: Sergei Soroka - First Officer
The reduction in the number of voyages has already had an impact on the 200 mile neutral zone in the Barents Sea, where NATO vessels formerly feared to enter.
Now there are constant forays by their ships, submarines,
helicopters and planes based in Norway.
The Russian navy believes that not only NATO but nations in the Pacific are eyeing up Russia's arctic trade and fishing route.
SOUNDBITE: (In Russian)
There's been no change in military policy. Maybe the Partnership for Peace seems a good political statement to the laymen. But not for the professional who knows the capabilities of our potential advisory.
SUPER CAPTION: Mikhail Motsen - Commander of the first flotilla of the Northern Fleet
These submarines were once the spearhead of a superpower.
But now they stand idly at the moorings, their capabilities blunted as state funding dries up.
Many officers acknowledge that things cannot get any worse and that the sun may have set on Russia's future as a global naval force.

Then the following day we went on a tour in Lovozero Husky park which is like 2 hours away from the main city, we did a reindeer and husky sledding, which is really a unique experience, because not all the places that has snow activities, offers this one. Fighting in these regiments were different boldness, courage and determination. To truly appreciate the role of marine soldiers during the Northern War, Peter I was able, by taking part in boarding combat in May 1703, when the mouth of the Neva were captured by two Swedish ship. The important role played by the Marines in the defense of the island of Kotlin where clearly manifested heroism, courage and bravery regiments Tolbukhina and Ostrovsky, have added many glorious pages in the history of the Russian military. After the defense Kotlin summer 1705 again raised the question of creating the fleet of specially trained marine units.16 (27) November 1705 decree of Peter I, was formed Marine Regiment. Must See: Murmansk Winter Trip under the Northern Lights | Russia Travel
Friends travel to Russia should be an adventure! In Russia drinking colorful drinks near the beach in swim trunks is often not an option. Now hiking up snow covered mountains in Murmansk is always a plan!
Outdoor fun awaits but there are many neat things to see inside the city itself like the Lenin Icebreaker.
Standing above it is the second largest statue in Russia - “Alyosha” who guards the city of Murmansk from bad guys.
Just a bit down the road is the tiny yet infamous fishing village of Teriberka which is truly a symbol of the north. It has a great abandoned school to explore and amazing waterfalls right outside the town. The ship graveyard is also pretty sweet.
We stopped at a geodesic dome hotel to hunt for the Northern Lights in style and comfort but it didn’t exactly work out. What did go well was playing with Huskies at the Saami Ethnic Village. Great fun in the fresh air, that is the spirit of Murmansk and its surrounding region.
